FALL BEHIND

Daylight Savings Time Ends

Every year, near the beginning of spring, billions of people everywhere, all around the world, deprive themselves of one hour of sleep as they adjust their clocks ahead one hour. The hour is just gone, as you have now left Standard Time and have entered Daylight Savings Time. And if the loss of an hour's worth of sleep isn't enough, DST also complicates timekeeping and can disrupt meetings, travel, billing, record keeping, medical devices, and heavy equipment.

But what you may not know is that DST also increases residential electricity consumption by 1% to 4%, primarily due to extra afternoon cooling. Several studies have suggested that DST increases motor fuel consumption. Just ask Exxon, U.S. gasoline demand grew an extra 1% during the newly introduced Indiana DST in March 2007. Retailers, sporting goods makers, and other businesses benefit from extra afternoon sunlight, but DST adversely affect farmers and others whose hours are set by the sun. DST also hurts prime-time broadcast ratings, restaurants, and theaters. Clock shifts correlate with decreased economic efficiency. In 2000 the daylight-saving effect implied an estimated one-day loss of $31 billion on U.S. stock exchanges.

Unfortunately, neither Senator John McCain nor the next President, Barack Obama, voices any opinion on DST, so I guess it is here to stay.

But there are plenty of other issues that the Republican and Democratic nominees do speak of, and you can find them at YOUR VOTE '08: WHERE THEY STAND, brought to us by the wonderful people at MSNBC. Check out where each candidate stand on issues that are important to you. Also, I found this wonderful Presidential Quiz that matches you to what candidates fit you best. The quiz is on the Glassbooth website. Glassbooth is a non-partisan, non-profit organization that helps people connect with political information. Weirdly enough, two candidates placed higher than Obama on my survey, although only by 4% points. Those candidates were Green Party candidate Cynthia McKinney and Independent Ralph Nader.

Glassbooth is a nonprofit organization that is creating innovative ways to access political information. An informed and interested democracy is a powerful thing. As an organization acting in the public’s interest, we are very serious about our core principles. - http://glassbooth.org/about

No one may ever stand with me to repeal the DST time change, but now I have a little more information on where they stand on other important issues. I hope you get to know where the candidates stand and vote based on that information.

Vote on Tuesday, but set your clocks back now!

This is a statement of opinion by Dennis Melancon, Jr. If you disagree, I invite your reply.
I have seen some postings in the blogosphere on the pros and cons of certain individuals as running mates for Obama, with most of the cons complaining that we would lose a Senators or Governors seat to the GOP.Some say ,that Obama is doing so well in Indiana he wouldn't need an Evan Bayh for instance.NONSENSE!WE need a balanced ticket to win,and I believe that this election is going to be very close electorally! If we lose a seat in Indiana and gain 6 or seven nationally I'm thinking we come out a little ahead and take the White House to Boot! And if the number 2 spot goes to Joe Biden even better, because his seat in Deleware will almost certainly go Democrat...My favorite choice for veep ,with Hillary not in the running would be Biden, but I think Bayh might have a little more clout as far as what he can deliver electorally to the ticket...I know a lot of lefties will bark about his DLC leanings,I say seal the deal, pick the strongest ticket and leave the ideological extremes at the door...
I have completed building the website for the Dracut Democratic Town Committee, and would like everyone in the world to click on it so that it will start coming up in google searches.I am new at sitebuilding but it came out O.k. and the committee seems to like it.Please find the time to check it out,the address is www.dracutdems.com.Thank You Much,Bye...
I am at this time announcing the formation of 'BABY BOOMERS FOR OBAMA'. 'BABY BOOMERS FOR OBAMA' is open to all 'boomers',(born between 1946 and 1963), and is dedicated to not only working diligently to electing Barack Obama President of The United States of America in 2008, but to actively supporting his two-term Presidency, from 2009 to 2017.

All 'Boomers' are encouraged to go to the group site and join 'BABY BOOMERS FOR OBAMA' now and help to put America on the right course again!
I am announcing at this time the creation of Viet Nam Veterans for Obama. This organization is open to all Viet Nam Veterans and Viet Nam-Era Veterans, (1961 - 1975), as we work together to not only elect Barack Obama President of the United States of America in 2008, but also to support fervently his two-term presidency from 2009 to 2017. I urge all eligible veterans to go to our group listing, 'Viet Nam Veterans For Obama' now, and join in this historical campaign for change.
For all those folks ready to cross party lines because they are enamored of one candidate and can't stand the other take note of this..John Mccain was found to be the eigth most conservative member of congress and has voted with the GOP 88 % of the time this year.Although Hillary voted to give Bush the authority for Bush to use force ,Mccain endorses a long term commitment in Iraq ,and holds positions on foreign policy in line with the Ultra right Wing think tank ,Project for a New American Century, the nuts that got us into this mess! That and votes against SCHIP,plans on making the Bush fat cat tax cuts permanent, and opposition to helping the folks who got stiffed by the sub-prime mortgage fiasco should be enough to convince a real Democrat to stick to our own.Mccain is a Reagan/Bush Republican ,unless we all stick together He will be serving the third Bush term and we will have even more right wing judges on the Supreme Court!
Take care with your divisive rhetoric! You think your the real Democrats but its that type of attitude that drives the real Democrats away.Obama pep rallys are lots of fun but they will not win the general! If Obama wins at the convention, and I guarantee you this is going to the convention ,he will need party unity to win in November. The kind of shrill voiced anti-establishment rhetoric you hear from the far left has been losing elections for the Democrats since 1972 at least, rivaled only by the assassins bullet for damaging the country and the party.Have a good but respectful debate, because in November if Hillarys supporters stay away ,Barack Obama will have no chance...
of Iowa has apparently been ranting publicly that Osama Bin Laden is Obamas #1 fan and will cheer gleefully if Obama wins. Now I am a Hillary Clinton supporter and I can think of plenty of reasons to support Her over Obama, but these Barack is a secret Muslim raves are getting a little tired.I am more concerned with the fact that most of Obamas supporters have a curfew(just kidding)and the fact that the Republicans will hack him to pieces in the General if he gets the nod.I said it before and I'll say it again ,me and all the Clinton supporters I know will support Obama if he wins ,but are more comfortable with Hillary against Mccain in November,we think Obama might be a bleeder....
does very well, which is probably not good news for him or the Democratic party.A lot of the Republican and Unenrolled voters voting for Obama in Primaries are going to vote for Mccain in the General.I have seen this locally, with Officials from my own town voting for Obama in the primary and going on record that they will be supporting the Republican nominee......I have also seen a CNN report where voters in Texas supporting Obama said they would probably vote GOP in the general... I just don't get the open and semi open primary thing ,if you are going to have an election to pick a parties nominee it should be restricted to members of the party...I believe Hillary Haters are voting in large numbers in the Democratic primaries and distorting the results, and combined with the large amount of conservative leaning voters who only vote in the General ,the Obama phenomenon may be too good to be true!
Early voters and absentee ballots in Florida will be nearly a million by the time polls open tomorrow.GOP slightly more than us,about 470k for Repubs and 400k+ for Dems....Hillary polling about 20 points ahead of Obama in Florida...Although the sunshine state is losing all its delegates due to early primary, because of the size of the vote and the importance of the state it is believed they will be reinstated by the convention...
The co chair of Hillarys national campaign, former Indiana Governor and current Senator Evan Bayh is often talked about as a Hillary Vice Presidential candidate.Bayhs father Birch Bayh was with Ted in the famous plane crash in the sixties and pulled Ted out of the wreck which left Ted with back problems he still suffers with. Birch Bayh was also a presidential candidate ,he lost the nomination to Jimmy Carter in 76....
