WeDemocrats
About the Author
WeDemocrats an independent political group, based in the United States that organizes and informs an online progressive activist community. A resource for progressive grassroots organizations, working for open, accountable government and the right of all citizens to be involved in shaping our nation's public policies. It is because of the active participation and help of our groups and members that WeDemocrats are able to rise up and stand out against our opponents. WeDems combines grassroot advocacy by its members through various political activities, including (but not limited to) voter registration drives with netroots activism and community outreach, and to involve young people in the political process. As we aggressively reach out to progressive groups, we continue to embrace community members and get them actively involved in various activities to help maintain and increase the organizations reach, find, train, and support fiscally responsible and progressive candidates at all levels of office across the country. We harness the power of our enormous grassroots network to get these candidates elected and to work towards positive change from the precinct up. We want to become an adjunct to the party, one to be taken seriously.

As you all well know, today is President Bill Clinton's birthday. I thought I would share my birthday greetings and encourage others to do so.

Ten years ago, we were in a better place in this country. There was no foreclosure crisis, no illegitimate wars, no state of economic recession,no social regression, and no difficulty with international relations. Bill Clinton will go down in history for being a great President.

Happy Birthday Bill!

Very interesting article coming up from the opinion of a reader who is concerning about the situation in the Caucus. It seems to me finally the American opinion is taking conscientious about GEOPOLITICS and comprehends what the old fashion of politics of the 20th century is gone!

And for the sake and PEACE in this small rock called PLANET a new alignment of POWER will be welcomed soon rather than later.

Superpowers flex muscle, but at what cost?

Earl Beal - Terre Haute, Ind.

In the power politics of international relations, superpower behavior is governed by the concept of geopolitical spheres of influence. When a superpower nation meddles in the internal affairs of another and attempts to exert undue political or economic influence in its perceived sphere, that's when trouble starts.

The trouble started when President Bush pressured Poland and the Czech Republic to establish a missile-defense system in their territories. This policy was then, and continues to be, seen by some as a direct threat to Russia, not to mention Bush's push for democratic reforms in former Soviet Republics still considered vital to Russia's national security interests.

Also, if Russia placed ballistic missiles in Cuba and/or Venezuela, this would constitute a direct threat to the U.S. Washington's hue and cry over such a move would be surpassed only by Bush's hypocrisy when he and his Pentagon took the "dramatic," "brutal" and "disproportionate" measure of invading a sovereign Iraq in 2003. As a result, what do we have?

The hemorrhaging of our national treasure in terms of lives lost.

Thousands of courageous people wounded.

A cost of more than $10 billion a month to finance this fiasco.

5 million Iraqi refugees scattered and without homes.

So, I was reading the Huffington Post the other day about an argument between Whoopi Goldberg and Elisabeth Hasselbeck and they were passionately arguing about McCain versus Obama again and Elisabeth Hasselbeck said: " I guess you can only have one opinion in this country." And, of course, Whoopi Goldberg called her out on what it has been like living under George W. Bush for the past 8 years. Of course, if it was me I would have pulled a Rosie O'Donnell ( I mean that in a good way).

Anyway, I think of the Knoxville shooting and the recent murder of the Arkansas Democratic Party leader and I am just appalled.

This is America, home of the free and brave. Everyone has a right to their opinion, no matter how popular and unpopular their opinion is. That's why the KKK is still alive and well, and that there is an American Communist Party. We may not agree with either, but we respect their right to practice their freedoms freely. Which is why I just hate it when someone tells me I should just shut up about the injustices of the Bush Administration and respect the President. I respect the office of the Presidency, and, because I have the freedom and rights to, I don't have to like the person in office! But, I would never kill someone for disagreeing with me. I may dislike them for disrespecting me and my opinions, but I would never kill them. I am not a Tibetan citizen who wants their country freed but is silenced by China for speaking out.

I consider these events to be wake up calls. This country needs to get its act together. And the first thing we can do is say: " I respectfully disagree with you."

Our campaign has successfully united for CHANGE on BARACKOBAMA.COM and other Democratic websites.

The grass roots efforts are expanding all across AMERICA.  As we increase our attention to GOTV, Hosting and attending events and phonebanking, the attacks on our nominee  have intensified. The intent is to distract and disrupt.

This tactic will not survive our unified decision to ignore. No Response, No Debate....Ignore.

We can do this,

While the American media is bluffing about the “Invasion of Georgia” the Bush administration just receive a lap in his face as a consequence of his erroneous and horrendous mishandling of the situation in the Middle East; special remarks on his attitudes an action in the illegal war in Iraq.

As Barack Obama moves into the "final stretch" in choosing his V.P., I have a few observations to offer:

1. In all successful Democratic campaigns of the last 50 years, the Presidential candidate has recruited the chief rival to be Vice President. (Kennedy-Johnson, Johnson-Humphrey, Carter-Mondale, Clinton-Gore) This tradition encourages Party unity and inclusiveness.

2. Despite the MSM's view that Obama and Clinton are still locked in rivalry, Hillary has consistently endorsed Barack and Obama has consistently complimented Clinton.   Read More »

THE 2008 CONVENTION:
AMERICANS GATHERING TO CHANGE THE COURSE OF A NATION

Democrats Announce Headline Speakers

Kicking Off Week-Long Convention Programming Roll-Out

DENVER - The Democratic National Convention Committee (DNCC) and the Obama for America Campaign today announced the headline speakers for the 2008 Convention. The Democratic National Convention will be held in Denver from August 25th through August 28th.

"The 2008 Convention will highlight Americans coming together to change the course of this nation," said Kansas Governor and Convention Co-Chair Kathleen Sebelius. "We are at a critical moment in our nation’s history. The politics and policies that have divided us will not allow us to achieve the change we need. Barack Obama is a leader to move America in a new direction and bring us together to turn moments of great challenge into moments of great opportunity. This year’s Democratic Convention is the story of people from across the country who believe it is time for change."

Sebelius noted that the Convention will use innovative techniques to highlight the people fueling this national movement for change.

"Just as the Obama Campaign uses the energy and passion of grassroots volunteers combined with state-of-the-art technology to bring people into their positive campaign for change, so will the 2008 Convention use the voices of the people through technology and innovative programming to lay out Barack Obama’s vision and policies for how to move America in a new direction," Sebelius added.

Following today’s announcement of the headline speakers for the four nights of the Convention, the DNCC will unveil additional Convention program details and speakers throughout this week. Monday through Wednesday’s Convention programs will be held at the Pepsi Center. Barack Obama will accept the Democratic nomination for President on Thursday, August 28th at INVESCO Field at Mile High.

2008 DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL CONVENTION HEADLINE SPEAKERS

Monday August 25th’s headline prime-time speaker will be Michelle Obama.

Senator Hillary Clinton, who is a champion for working families and one of the most effective and empathetic voices in the country today, will be the headline prime-time speaker on Tuesday August 26th.

The headline prime-time speaker on Wednesday August 27th will be Barack Obama’s Vice Presidential nominee.

On Thursday, August 28th, the DNCC will throw open the doors of the Convention and move to INVESCO Field at Mile High so that more Americans can take part in the fourth night of the Convention as Barack Obama accepts the Democratic nomination.

Democrats Release Platform
By Jonathan Weisman
Barack Obama's takeover of the Democratic Party is nearly complete.

A draft of the Democratic National Committee's 2008 platform was sent this morning to platform committee members, and aside from some nods to the losers, Hillary Rodham Clinton and John Edwards, the 54-page document reads like a compilation of Sen. Obama's stump speeches. There is a section on fatherhood, a definition of patriotism (not only to declare our love of this nation, but to show it), a section detailing Obama's newly rejiggered economic stimulus plan, a call for more service, through an expanded AmeriCorps and Peace Corps, and a whole lot of hope.

"It is time for a change," declares the draft's preamble.

The Democrats commit themselves to a comprehensive overhaul of the nation's immigration laws, including a commitment to bring illegal immigrants "out of the shadows" and to allow them to "get right with the law." A party at times riven over the issue of abortion will state it "strongly and unequivocally supports Roe v. Wade and a woman's right to choose a safe and legal abortion, regardless of the ability to pay." That piece of the platform appears to favor doing away with restrictions on the use of taxpayer funds to help finance abortions.

And the party promises to turn away from the intrusive police apparatus of the post-9/11 world of President Bush's War on Terror. The platform pledges to "reject illegal wire-tapping of American citizens," so-called national security letters issued by the FBI that leave citizens little legal recourse, and "torture."

"We will restore our constitutional traditions, and recover our nation's founding commitment to liberty under the law," the draft platform states.

For Edwards, who has bigger issues to deal with at the moment, the DNC makes good on Obama's pledge to him to elevate poverty eradication as a policy goal. "Working together," the platform states, "we can cut poverty in half within ten years."

And Clinton is the star of the platform's section on expanded opportunities for women.

""We have produced [the] first woman Secretary of State, the first woman Speaker of the House of Representatives, and, in 2008, [with] Hillary Rodham Clinton, the first woman in American history to win presidential primaries in out nation," the platform states.

As you all probably very well know by now, John Edwards had an affair a couple of years ago while he was running for President and campaigned alongside John Kerry.

The oddest thing about it, when I heard about it, it never felt like big news. Not downsizing the effect it has on his family and the Democratic Party, and not excusing the affair either, it's just that, since Bill Clinton was president not too long ago, and we all remember how bad that went down, it just seems like regular news that a U.S. politician would do that. It seems so commonplace, and it is upsetting that it is. Personally, I can only hope that Elizabeth would have him sleep on the couch for a while and have them both attend marriage counseling, but then again, it isn't my business.

Why is the personal lives of our politicians so important as to why we view them like we do? We elect them to serve us, and yet, we expect them to sacrifice their humanity to be placed on the pedestal of perfection that comes with their title. Isn't more important to talk political about our politicians? Hell, we already know how sleazy they are and how it comes from their job environment. We already know that to be a modern-day politician means extramartial affairs are around the corner. But, Bill Clinton was a great President who did so much for the good of this country as a whole. John Edwards is a great politician who really practices what he preaches. Again, I am not trying to say I condone both their actions. All I'm saying is that politics is personal, but politics doesn't have to be personal, meaning politics is just regulating certain factors in our everyday lives that affect us. Our jobs, our cars, our schools, our hospitals, you get the picture; but politics doesn't have to be personal regarding the sometimes extreme fanfare we have for our candidates and politicians and what our politicians do after work.

Besides, whenever a Democratic politicians strays in any way, the Republican Party eats it right up. Notice how they still use Bill Clinton when rebutting in arguments of the many sins of the Bush Administration. I recall even on The View once Joy Behar was listing the then sins of George W. Bush ( 2006, the list has been made longer), and asked " why hasn't this guy been thrown out?" Loud applause. Sherri Shepard: " Yes, but he didn't sleep with an intern" Louder applause. Does a President have to sleep with an intern to be considered impeachable? I mean, seriously.

And don't get me started on the "morally correct" Republican Party's long list of politicians who have "strayed." Larry Craig anybody? Not implying that his sexuality is a sin, but the fact that he resorted to prostituion via Airport Terminal bathroom is strayed enough.

Anyway, I am not looking for verification of my thoughts, I am just venting. Feel free to comment.

Out of respect to the Dalai Lama and the oppressed people of Tibet, I am protesting the Olympic Games.

I respect the athletes brave enough to go to China and compete in the Games, representing their country well by doing the best they can. But the hosting country's actions speak otherwise to the goals and ideals of the reason for the Olympic Games.

The Olympics give us hope that we can put aside our problems as a world and recognize that we are all in this together. But China has too much problems to pull a Hallmark card presentation of these Games.

Therefore, I will not be watching the Olympic Games until China recognizes that Tibet has every right to be freed and a free country and that the Dalai Lama is respected and not shunned.

From: Heather Smith, Rock the VoteDear Rock the Vote staff,I was outraged when I found out the other day that the Department of Veterans Affairs has forbidden voter registration drives in its hospitals, rehab centers and other facilities.

This ban hurts thousands of young veterans who have been injured while fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. We should be helping our veterans register and vote, not making it more difficult.

Last week, the Senate introduced a bill to overturn the ban and allow states to require V.A. hospitals to offer voter registration to their clients.

Will you join me and ask your Senator to co-sponsor the “Veteran Voting Support Act”?

Banning the most basic act of democracy from Americans who have fought for our democracy just doesn’t make any sense.  We need to stand up for our veterans--especially for the thousands of young veterans who are eligible to vote in their first presidential election.

 Please contact your senators today.

  Sincerely,

Heather Smith
