PRINCETON, NJ -- Hispanic registered voters' support for Barack Obama for president remained consistent and strong in June, with Obama leading John McCain by 59% to 29% among this group.

While Hispanics generally preferred Hillary Clinton to Obama for the Democratic presidential nomination, a solid majority of Hispanics have consistently backed Obama against McCain in general-election trial heats. Obama has led McCain by about a 2-to-1 margin since Gallup began tracking general-election voting preferences in early March. ...

Rather, Hispanics of differing demographic backgrounds all tend to solidly support Obama. It thus appears that there isn't much beyond a shared Hispanic ethnicity or identity that explains Hispanic voting patterns. ...

Implications

Some political experts assumed Obama's struggle to attract widespread Hispanic support in the primaries would carry over into the general-election campaign against the Republican candidate. But Hispanics have become a reliable Democratic voting bloc, and have so far shown little difficulty in transferring their loyalties from Clinton to Obama. Obama continues to lead McCain by about a 2-to-1 margin among Hispanic voters, as he has since March. Hispanic voters could be crucial in key swing states such as New Mexico, Colorado, and Florida.

While George W. Bush made a strong push for the Hispanic vote in the 2000 and 2004 elections, McCain faces an uphill climb to attract Hispanics' support, given their consistent and solid support for Obama in recent months.

..From recycling to energy efficiency to remodeling, more churches in the Tulsa area are looking to be leading caretakers of the Earth, said Cheryl Cheadle, the area's coordinator for Blue Thumb, an Oklahoma Conservation educational program.

"It is very easy to live in the situation at hand, when resources are very affordable now," Cheadle said. "Many people are accepting that reality — that our actions have a global impact." ...

"I think it's a real basis of mindful and spiritual practices of taking care of the plant and taking care of each other," Ihloff said. "We want people to just pick it up one step at a time."

Through these efforts, local churches are creating new meanings for "dominion" and "stewardship" for congregations, Huffstetler said.

"Our concept of creation is that it is a gift, and that we are not the owners," she said. "There's been a misunderstanding of the Biblical word 'dominion,' which is a scriptural word, but we've interpreted it as 'domination.' I think dominion is, again, an aspect of stewardship, of being good stewards, to have a care for the entire creation."

Plus, taking care of the environment just feels good, Cheadle said.

"When you get people working together for the good of the Earth, that's when you make a difference," she said. ..

On Friday July 4th we will celebrate Independence Day marking 232 years since our founding fathers declared that the United States of America would be an independent nation. Back in 1776, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin and others showed courage, leadership and vision by drafting the Declaration of Independence creating a democratic government based on freedom and rights for the common people.

Now, 232 years later, we need to see the same courage, leadership and vision from our elected leaders to declare independence again. In 2008, the independence we need to declare is not from tyrannical leaders and an oppressive government but energy independence from foreign sources that have too much control over a product that is so vital to our nation.

This past week had important events scheduled every day ending with a very busy weekend. Here is a brief rundown of the highlights of the week:

The first major joint debate between the 2 candidates in the 5th Congressional District was held on Tuesday at the CBICC luncheon. The event was broadcast later that evening on PCN. The feedback I've received is that the debate clearly showed the contrast where I stand on the important issues, both regional and national, and where my opponent stands. The important topics addressed included healthcare, the Iraq war and the growing crisis of increasing gas and energy costs.

Where do we stand as a community? We (Latinos) are a wildly different bunch, that has a much in common as we have differences and as many would like to divide us we some how manage to stand together. it's what makes me proud to be a Latino.

I would like to know where other latinos on this forum stand. Are they disappointed that Hillary did not win? Will they support Obama? Will they vote McCain? or will the write Hillary? or did they support Obama from the beginning?

I am a Hillary supporter and must say Obama has not impress me. Right now I am writing Hillary, that does not mean I won't change my mind either for Obama or McCain. I am simply waiting to see how it plays out.

If you haven't yet had the opportunity to examine the Republican Party of Texas' new platform yet (and, if you haven't who can blame you - no one likes to induce projectile vomiting upon themselves), chances are you wouldn't be surprised that it is as radical and right-wing as ever. Here is a summary of the worst of it.

You are created in the image of God, period, and natural death must include executions, according to the Republicans:

We believe that human life is sacred, created in the image of God. Life begins at the moment of fertilization and ends at the point of natural death. All innocent human life must be protected.

So, if you don't believe in God, tough: you were created in his image anyway. Oh, and that "natural death" part? We assume the Texas GOP counts a lethal injection as a "natural death."

And, of course, it wouldn't be a GOP platform without gay-bashing within the first 1,000 words:

We believe that traditional marriage is a legal and moral commitment between a natural man and a natural woman. We recognize that the family is the foundational unit of a healthy society and consists of those related by blood, marriage, or adoption. The family is responsible for its own welfare, education, moral training, conduct, and property.

No surprise there.
