Obama Wins in CBS and CNN Debate Polls

A CBS News snap poll of uncommitted voters shows Obama beat McCain in tonight's debate 40% to 26%, with 30% calling it a draw. Meanwhile, a CNN poll shows Obama beat McCain by a whopping 54% to 30%. Not a bad night's work for "that one."

McCain/Palin Rallies Get Ugly: Obama Hatred Turns to Open Racism and Death Threats

As the McCain/Palin campaign gets uglier, so do the crowds at their rallies. Stoked by what the Associated Press called "racially tinged" attacks on Barack Obama particularly from Sarah Palin, by Republican anger at Obama's surge toward victory, and probably by their own deep-seated bigotry, the crowds at McCain/Palin events have begun expressing their Obama hatred in increasingly disturbing terms.

As eyewitness Dana Milbank observes in the Washington Post, Palin's line of attack on Obama at an Oct. 6 rally in Clearwater, Florida, prompted one man to shout, "Kill him!" (a secret service investigation is currently underway in response to this incident, which is hardly good press for the campaign). Others at McCain/Palin events have shouted "treason" and even "terrorist!" at the mention of Obama's name, as the Huffington Post discusses in detail. At the Clearwater event, as Dana Milbank observes, Palin's media-bashing likewise produced a hateful response from the crowd, who turned on reporters in the press area, waving thunder sticks and shouting abuse while others hurled obscenities at a camera crew. One Palin supporter shouted a racial slur at an African American sound man and told him, "Sit down, boy" (see also ABC News).

Of course one of this looks good for the McCain/Palin campaign, which is coming increasingly to resemble a lynch mob.

"Pit Bull" Palin Leads Charge as Republicans Get Nasty in Last-Ditch Effort to Stop Obama

Saturday's Washington Post reports that the John McCain campaign is preparing an aggressively negative campaign against Barack Obama in a last-ditch effort to squash the Democrat's presidential hopes as Election Day rapidly approaches. With scarcely a month to go until Nov. 4, as the Post's Michael D. Shear reports at length, Republicans "are readying a newly aggressive assault on Sen. Barack Obama's character," including any personal associations they can exploit, believing that to win on Election Day they "have to change the subject" away from the economic concerns which have boosted the Democrats in recent weeks (see also Huffington Post).

"Pit bull" Sarah Palin appears to be leading the charge in this effort. In an interview on Fox News Friday, Palin said that Obama is "reckless" and that some of what Obama has said, "in my world, disqualifies someone from consideration as the next commander in chief." Then at a fundraiser on Saturday, Palin accused Obama of "palling around with terrorists," a reference to Obama's tenuous association with '60s militant William Ayers. Obama "is someone who sees America it seems as being so imperfect, imperfect enough that he's palling around with terrorists who would target their own country...," Palin said, "...This is not a man who sees America like you and I see America." Clearly designed to paint Obama as someone who is "outside the American mainstream" (i.e., exotic, foreign, Other, and dangerous), Palin's comments were described as "unsubstantiated" and "racially tinged" by the Associated Press, who observed also that "John McCain himself may come to regret" them.

In view of their total reliance on negative campaigning, it seems clear at this point that John McCain and Sarah Palin have nothing positive to offer.

KeatingEconomics.com: Obama Unveils New Website and Video on McCain/Keating Links and the Current Financial Crisis

The Barack Obama campaign has unveiled a new website, KeatingEconomics.com, including a new 13-minute documentary video on John McCain's role in the Keating savings & loan scandal of the 1980s and its links to the current financial crisis. As a desperate McCain/Palin campaign resorts to increasingly negative attacks on Obama, relying heavily on fear-mongering and flimsy personal associations, the Obama campaign is hitting back with the undeniable facts of McCain's own corrupt actions and their consequences for the US economy.

McCain and four other Senators - known collectively as the "Keating Five" - were accused in 1989 of improperly aiding Arizona banker Charles Keating in efforts to hamper regulatory intrusions on the industry's risky investment practices. McCain, who had received over $100,000 in campaign contributions from Keating, was officially rebuked only for "poor judgment," though his true culpability in the matter may run much deeper than the official charge suggests. At the very least, McCain's history in this matter casts doubt on his claims to be a "maverick reformer," though it is a card that Democrats including Barack Obama have thus far been shy about bringing into play.

The Obama campaign broke its silence on the matter late last month in response to whining from the McCain campaign that the news media has been biased in favor of Obama. Obama spokesman Bill Burton invoked the Keating affair while hitting back at the McCain campaign for suggesting that Obama had received a pass from the press, saying that McCain had seen little scrutiny of his association to Keating despite being "centrally involved" in America's "last major financial regulatory crisis, resulting in a huge bailout." Senior Obama strategist Robert Gibbs, meanwhile, had the following to say to reporters asking if the Obama campaign planned to make Keating an issue: "If we're going to talk about what's fair game in terms of people in a relationship, I don't see how... that wouldn't be important" (Huffington Post, Politico).

Back in May, Obama himself said that the Keating scandal was not off limits, but has since said little or nothing directly about it. Speaking recently on the sad state of the US economy, Obama briefly referred to the savings and loan crisis of the 1980s, but without directly referring to McCain or Keating. These more direct comments from the Obama campaign followed statements from Senator Sherrod Brown of Ohio strongly suggesting that the Keating affair is indeed on the table:

"It is not so much [McCain's] economic proposals but his economic record.... His main adviser is Phil Gramm -- he was his mentor in the Senate -- and you just tie it all together. Of course John McCain supported the oil industry, he has oil lobbyists working for him. Of course John McCain supported these trade agreements, he has got Wall Street people working for him... It is all wrapped up together. John McCain is a creature of these interest groups in Washington. He is no maverick and, from the Keating Five on, his ethics have been questionable. He's not a maverick and Barack has got to just keep hammering on that."

Racist Newspaper Attack on Obama by Virginia Republican

The shameless bigot you see pictured at right is Bobby May, McCain campaign chair in Buchanan County, Virginia, as well as treasurer and former correspondence secretary of the Buchanan County Republican Party. Mr. May recently published a newspaper column containing an overtly racist attack against Barack Obama. Appearing in a local paper called The Voice, May's column contained a number of inflammatory charges against Obama, including the following on Obama's plans for America if elected:

"FREEDOM OF RELIGION: Mandatory Black Liberation Theology classes taught in all churches - raise taxes to pay for this mandate. Put Rev. Jeremiah Wright in charge...."

"DRUG CRISIS: Raise taxes to pay for free drugs for Obama’s inner-city political base...."

"2ND AMENDMENT: Under Obama will only apply to gang-bangers, illegal aliens, Islamo-Fascist terrorists, and Senator Jim Webb’s aide...."

"FOREIGN RELATIONS: Appoint Rev. Al Sharpton as Secretary of State, Jesse Jackson as UN Representative, and let Bill Clinton handle all other "foreign relations" ... As long as Hillary doesn't find out...!"

"THE WHITE HOUSE: Hire rapper Ludacris to “paint it black.” Taxes to be increased to buy enough paint for the job plus spray-paint for graffiti...."

"THIRD WORLD COUNTRIES: Raise taxes to send $845 billion, most of it to Africa so the Obama family there can skim off enough for them to free their goats and live the American Dream...."

"NATIONAL ANTHEM: Change to the "Black National Anthem" by James Weldon Johnson...."

"US CURRENCY: Update photos to reflect US diversity; include pictures of "great Americans" such as Oprah Winfrey, Ludacris, Sheila Jackson-Lee, Paris Hilton, and Louisiana Congressman William Jefferson (Obama's new Secretary of the Treasury - 50 Cent refused position after learning that he would lose his crazy check if he accepted the nomination)...."

"US FLAG: Replace 50 stars with a star and crescent logo; red stripes changed to green to represent Obama’s tree-hugging radical environmentalism and his lack of experience. Flag lapel pins, having become a substitute for “real patriotism,” will henceforth be banned...."

At the end of his column May challenged Obama to meet him on "County Talk," a Friday morning talk show on radio station WMJD 100.7 in Grundy VA. It seems Mr. May is quite the local mover and shaker in Buchanan County Republican circles: In addition to his work with The Voice and WMJD, he has also appeared in the Virginia Mountaineer with other local Republican leaders.

Palin Lied About Sudan Divestment in Debate

Sarah Palin claimed during Thursday's vice presidential debate that, as governor of Alaska, she fought to protest atrocities in Sudan by dropping assets tied to the country's brutal regime from the state's $40 billion investment fund. "When I and others in the legislature found out we had some millions of dollars in Sudan," Palin said, "we called for divestment through legislation of those dollars to make sure we weren't doing anything that would be seen as condoning the activities there in Darfur." Reporting by ABC News and the Washington Post indicates otherwise.

In fact, Palin's administration opposed a measure to divest Alaskan holdings in Sudan-linked investments. "The [Palin] administration killed our bill," Alaska state representative Les Gara told ABC News. Gara and state representative Bob Lynn co-sponsored a bipartisan resolution (HB287) early this year to force the Alaska Permanent Fund to divest millions of dollars in holdings tied to the Sudanese government. Palin's administration openly opposed the bill, stating its opposition in a public hearing on the measure in February. Said Brian Andrews, Palin's deputy revenue commissioner, at the hearing: "The legislation is well-intended, and the desire to make a difference is noble, but mixing moral and political agendas at the expense of our citizens' financial security is not a good combination." Gara told ABC that opposition from Palin's administration was instrumental in killing the measure. "I walked out of that hearing livid," Gara recalled, noting that because of Palin's opposition to the bill, "We could not get a vote in that committee." Any expression of support from Palin for the Sudan divestment effort would come only at the end of the legislative session, after the Gara-Lynn measure's fate had been sealed.

The Alaska Permanent Fund currently holds $22 million in Sudan-linked investments, according to the non-profit Sudan Divestment Task Force. Palin's running mate, John McCain, has expressed strong support of Sudan divestment efforts, but was criticized when it was revealed in May that his wife Cindy held $2 million in investment funds owning shares of Sudan-linked companies. Mrs. McCain sold those holdings following inquiries from the news media.

VP Debate: Biden Wins on Substance, Palin Meets Low Expectations

Early polls following last night's vice-presidential debate show that Joe Biden won handily on substance while Sarah Palin "met or exceeded" the low expectations set for her by Republicans and the media. Many leading observers agree, contrasting Biden's focus on the issues and command of the facts with Palin's evasiveness and folksy grandstanding.

A CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll showed that 51% of viewers thought Biden performed better in the debate overall while 36% thought Palin performed better, with higher marks for Biden also on intelligence, ability to serve as president if called, and ability to bring change: 57% of CNN respondents said Biden was the more intelligent candidate to 26% for Palin, 87% said Biden was qualified to serve as president to 46% for Palin, and 53% said Biden was more likely to bring change to 42% for Palin. Meanwhile, a CBS News poll of uncommitted voters shows Biden won 46% to Palin's 21% with 33% saying the debate was a tie. On knowledgeability, Biden led Palin in the CBS poll 98% to 66%, while on preparedness for the job of vice-president Biden led 97% to 55%. A Media Curves poll shows independent voters favoring Biden in the debate 69% to 31% overall, with independents (and Democrats) giving Biden significantly higher marks also on foreign policy and national security as well as on the economy.

Many prominent political pundits have also called the debate for Biden, with many also highly critical of Palin's evasiveness and folksy grandstanding. At CNN, David Gergen called Biden's performance "the best debate performance of his life"; while Bill Schneider writes: "Palin's answers do not lack confidence, they lack coherence." Bob Schieffer of CBS said that, while Biden showed a clear command of the issues and facts, Palin was evasive: "I found it a little disconcerting, time and again, Governor Palin would just choose not to answer the question and launch into some dissertation, sometimes talking points, and not really address what Gwen Ifill had asked her" (America Blog). While Biden seemed to speaking to all of America throughout the debate, Salon's Joan Walsh observes, Palin "was talking to - and winking at - her own private Idaho." Newsweek's Howard Fineman compared the tone of Palin's attacks on Biden to "what a wolverine would sound like chewing through plywood...."

Using attack lines she had carefully rehearsed, drawing on a decade of conservative sound bites and dismissive rhetoric, Palin dashed through 90 minutes without having to expose her lack of detained knowledge, blasting away at Biden. Moderator Gwen Ifill rarely followed up, and the format--a strict two minutes for answers--insured that the pace was what Governor Palin wanted: frantic.

But does any of this mean that Palin “won” the night, in the sense that it advanced the cause of her Republican ticket? I don’t think so.

Time's Joe Klein writes likewise: "Sarah Palin's high-energy performance in the vice-presidential debate was the most glaring demonstration - since George W. Bush's performances in 2000 - of how little you can get away with knowing and still survive one of these things...," Klein writes, "...Joe Biden, by contrast, demonstrated a real knowledge of the issues in question...."

[Palin's] relentless opacity was impressive. She refused to answer the questions where she hadn't been prepped with answers and when Biden pointed out that an early question had been on deregulation not taxes, she flashed: "I may not answer the questions the way you and the moderator want to hear, but I'm gonna talk straight to the American people."

Talk straight she didn't, with only a few exceptions. She talked talking points. And when the talking points concerned areas where she didn't know diddly, she didn't talk them very convincingly. Indeed, there were times I got the distinct impression that she didn't understand the points she was talking about (on the vice president's constitutional powers, for example).

For Eugene Robinson of the Washington Post, the overriding patern in the debate was one of Biden presenting facts and Palin "saying stuff." Writes Robinson of Palin: "Sometimes she throws in a fact, but mostly she seems to be offering a string of approximate policy positions, encomiums to the American spirit, disputed interpretations of Barack Obama's record and anecdotes from Alaska." Even two former Bush administration officials, defense staffer Torie Clarke and communications staffer Matthew Dowd, agreed that it was Joe Biden's night (see Huffington Post, America Blog). Said Clarke:

I think Joe Biden had his best night tonight. He came with one mission, and that was to go after John McCain, and he did it, backed up by facts. I think he did a better job tonight of tying McCain to the Bush administration than Obama did last week.

Said Dowd, agreeing with Clarke:

I think, you know, I agree with her on this. I think Sarah Palin did reasonably well. The death spiral she has been on for the last week, she survived. She's lived another day. She did well. But I think, when the polls come out in the next two, three days, Joe Biden won this debate.

Sarah Palin's only "win" of the evening was that she exceeded the low expectations set for her by Republicans and the media, which in the real world of issues, ideas, and facts is no win at all. The New York Times observes:

We cannot recall when there were lower expectations for a candidate than the ones that preceded Sarah Palin’s appearance in Thursday night’s vice-presidential debate with Joseph Biden. After a series of stumbling interviews that raised serious doubts even among conservatives about her fitness to serve as vice president, Ms. Palin had to do little more than say one or two sensible things and avoid an election-defining gaffe.

By that standard, but only by that standard, the governor of Alaska did well. But Ms. Palin never really got beyond her talking points in 90 minutes, mostly repeating clichés and tired attack lines and energetically refusing to answer far too many questions.

Senator Biden did well, avoiding one of his own infamous gaffes, while showing a clear grasp of the big picture and the details. He left Ms. Palin way behind on most issues, especially foreign policy and national security, where she just seemed lost. It was in those moments that her lack of experience — two terms as mayor of a tiny Anchorage suburb and less than two years as governor — was most painfully evident....

One can argue (and her supporters will) that Ms. Palin is a newcomer and can’t be expected to know all of the wonkish details, that what matters is the image she projects. Except, anyone who is running for vice president in these very dangerous times needs to have detailed knowledge....

In the end, the debate did not change the essential truth of Ms. Palin’s candidacy: Mr. McCain made a wildly irresponsible choice that shattered the image he created for himself as the honest, seasoned, experienced man of principle and judgment. It was either an act of incredible cynicism or appallingly bad judgment.

There are those, of course, who will say that Palin "won" the debate simply by exceeding the low expectations set for her and surviving the debate, or that Palin's folksy grandstanding is just as good as Biden's command of the facts - that, in the battle of style vs. substance, Palin wins. One of these is Ruben Navarette at CNN: "Tie goes to the hockey mom," Navarette stupidly writes, as though you can make it that way simply because you imagine it to be. Another is Roger Simon at Politico: Oozing with admiration for Palin's folksy charm, Simon arrogantly dismisses Biden's assertion that "facts matter," asking rhetorically: "Yeah? In politics? Since when?"

Since the beginning, Mr. Simon: The political debate is a tradition that dates back to the ancient Greeks who invented democracy - a tradition based on issues, ideas, and facts, not folksy little tag lines. In the battle of issues, ideas, and facts, Biden wins.

In Case You Missed It: Palin Ignorant on Supreme Court Decisions and Right to Privacy

Just in case you missed it, the latest installment of Sarah Palin's CBS News interview with Katie Couric shows her to be ignorant on any and all Supreme Court cases other than Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 decision granting American women the right to abortion, with which Palin disagrees. Asked by Couric what other Supreme Court decisions she disagreed with, Palin couldn't name any, offering instead the type of circuitous and vague reply that has become her trademark (see also Huffington Post, Politico):

COURIC: What other Supreme Court decisions do you disagree with?

PALIN: Well, let's see.... There's, of course in the great history of America there have been rulings, that's never going to be absolute consensus by every American. And there are those issues, again, like Roe v. Wade, where I believe are best held on a state level and addressed there. So you know, going through the history of America, there would be others but....

COURIC: Can you think of any?

PALIN: ...Well, I could think of … any again, that could be best dealt with on a more local level. Maybe I would take issue with. But, you know, as mayor, and then as governor and even as a vice president, if I'm so privileged to serve, wouldn't be in a position of changing those things but in supporting the law of the land as it reads today.

Palin also stumbled on our constitutional right to privacy as interpreted by the Supreme Court, a cornerstone of the Roe v. Wade decision: While she opposes Roe v. Wade, she agreed with Couric that the US Constitution guarantees the right to privacy to all citizens, but then seemed to feel that states have the right to overrule our constitutional right to privacy in the case of abortion. Here, again, Palin's reply borders on the wholly incoherent:

COURIC: Do you think there's an inherent right to privacy in the Constitution?

PALIN: I do. Yeah, I do....

COURIC: The cornerstone of Roe v. Wade.

PALIN: ...I do. And I believe that individual states can best handle what the people within the different constituencies in the 50 states would like to see their will ushered in an issue like that.

In other words, "states' rights" trump the US Constitution when it comes to a woman's right to privacy regarding her own body. I wonder what other constitutional rights Palin would like to see states given the power to take away.

Palin's Supreme Court gaffe is only the latest in a string of gaffes, in what has become something more like an epic saga than a mere interview. In past installments, Palin was unable to name for Couric a single newspaper or magazine she has read ("...All of 'em...."); was unable to provide a single example of John McCain's "maverick reform efforts" from his 26 years in the US Senate ("I'll try to find ya some and I'll bring them to ya."); and repeated her ridiculous claim that Alaska's proximity to Russia should be counted as foreign affairs experience ("...As Putin rears his head and comes into the airspace of the United States of America, where, where do they go? It's Alaska....").

This person should never be allowed within a hundred miles of the White House.

FALSE: THEY ARE INSURED BY THE FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation)

If the bailout does not pass is the end of the world, it’s a financial catastrophe.

FALSE: nothing like that is going to happen because this crisis is a failure of CORRUPTED financial institutions and they are small in number compare with those who are playing by the rules.

If the bailout does not pass the economy are going to sink in to a deep recession.

FALSE: This is another argument they use to hidden the real true and scare the people in “MAIN STREET”. This economy of this country is “IN CONTRACTION STATUS”, this means the power of acquired good for the people every day is less than before. This could be corrected with a good and strong policies reinforcing the INCOME of every American and reinforcing this sectors of the economy that are capable to generate more employment. A good example could be investing this 700 billion in infrastructure around the nation.

If this bailout does not pass you can not get loans to buy house, cars and you can loose your credit card.

FALSE: One of the main problems of this crisis is THE ABUSE and the BAD USE of the credit. They buy houses they couldn’t afford to pay. They buy cars they couldn’t afford to pay. They misused his / her credit card and they couldn’t afford to pay. All this happen for the ambition and mismanaged of the CEOs of this corrupted bankers or institutions.
So what kind of bailout (CORRECTION) would be this, if this money go again to the market with the same purpose as is the mantra of the government and the lawmakers who are supporting this legislation.
Moreover if you want a loan and have a good credit and you can afford and pay your debts do so, but if not, don’t do it!

FALSE: As I said before, this particular crisis can be solving by the market as is. In this country there are very serious banking institutions that are capable to absorb the failure of the others in a very intelligent manner without compromising his capital.
Bank of America, JP Morgan and other banks are a good example and they will be very happy receiving those people looking loans for homes, cars, boats and credit cards!, working people who are capable and can afford to pay on time his bills.

These bailouts has to pass, to secure more liquidity to the banking systems buying his negative assets and generate the reactivation of the economy, them people in Main St., can get more loans of any kind.

Des Moines Register: McCain Gets Testy with Editors

John McCain got testy this week in an interview with the editorial board of the Des Moines Register. In video clips from the hour-long session on Monday, McCain appears stiff, uncomfortable, and aggressive, clenching his jaw as he offered abrupt, sarcastic answers to questions from the editors (see Des Moines Register, Huffington Post, Washington Post).

McCain grew especially testy when asked about his running mate, Sarah Palin, and about whether she has the knowledge and experience to be president. Reminded that there are people, including prominent conservatives, who think Palin is not ready, McCain turned sarcastic. "Really...?" he asked with mock surprise, "...I haven't detected that.... Now, if there's a Georgetown cocktail party person who, quote, calls himself a conservative, and doesn't like her, good luck, good luck, fine."

McCain also angrily dismissed the suggestion that his campaign has been less than honest in its attacks on Barack Obama. "I think it would be valuable if you gave me some examples from, for an assertion of that nature," McCain said, clearly annoyed. Confronted with the example of a now-discredited McCain ad claiming that Obama supported comprehensive sex education for kindergarten children, McCain insisted: "He did. He did. He did. I'll be glad to provide you -- we have the documentation. I'll be glad to provide it to you. Now, you may not accept that documentation. We have it and we found out it's true."

On the topic of health care reform, the editors noted that McCain has enjoyed taxpayer-financed health care plan his entire adult life. McCain again shot back a sarcastic reply: "You know that's an interesting statement, isn't it?" he asked, grinning. "So, and I have never, um, been an astronaut, but I think I know the challenges of space. And I've never done a lot of things in my life that I think I am familiar with." McCain then contrasted his health care plan with Obama's, which he described as government-run health care. At last, McCain leaned back in his chair with a self-satisfied smirk and once again played his POW card: "I did go a period of time where the health care wasn't so good."

Following on the heels of his angry, disdainful performance in his recent debate with Obama, this interview and video is certain to provoke further discussion of McCain's temperament problem as well his problem with the truth. This may prove as unhelpful to McCain's presidential hopes as those recent jaw-dropping interviews with his running mate.
