Reading the speech given by Gov. Patrick today, I swung between hope and pesimism; or should that be cynicism? The plans he put forward sound grand. Massachusetts will flow with milk and honey if he can bring them off. If, and that's a mighty big "if," it seems to me.
But then, I've got a cold and am feeling pretty miserable and non-optimistic at the moment. Though I doubt he can do it, he has my sincere good wishes to do so.

I'm experiencing severe e-mail difficulties. For the past few days, all my sparetime has been spent wrestling with this; so, I've not been paying my usual close attention to the news. That's why this article detailing some of Wal-Mart's evil deeds has only just now come to my attention.
Wal-Mart is evil. It exploits the very people, low income shoppers, it attracts. A friend of mine expressed what struck me as a shocking attitude when she admitted in one breath that the quality of the products at Wal-Mart is shoddy, yet stated in the next breath that she intended to continue shopping there because she liked the prices. She totally failed to grasp that the low prices directly lead to low product quality. Apparently, enough people haven't made that connection, and enough people don't care about anything beyond their own short term cost savings to allow the company to earn 2.9 BILLION last quarter.
2.9 billion in one quarter, yet they demand to be paid back by a former employee who will need complete, ongoing care for the rest of her life. Derned right that may be legal but it's not right.

OK, I've just about accepted that it will take an act of God to get Gore into the race. I don't like it, I'm definitely not "OK with it," but there's no time for selfpity. Time is short, and (with apoligies to my Hillery-supporter friends, poor, deluded lambs) we're not going to knock Hillery out of the race and install a real Democrat as nominee by supporting a ghost candidate. It's time to act. It's derned near too late!
All those who support Kucinich and/or Gravel, and all those who say" "oh, yes, I like Kucinich/Gravel, but he doesn't stand a chance" must unite *now*! Kucinich is the only real democrat in this race. He and Gravel have been speaking the truth fearlessly and largely unheard for months. A Kucinich/Gravel ticket can bring change, can bring renewal, can start this country back on the road to honesty, honor, selfsufficiency and international acceptance and respect. Read More »

The below landed in my inbox a couple of days ago. Sorry for the delay in posting it, but there's still time to add your name to the boycott pledge.

Far from the headlines, the crisis in Burma continues--fueled, in part, by international oil corporations like Total Oil and Chevron/Texaco. These corporations don't just fund the junta; they lobby on its behalf in capital cities around the world. These are the same companies many of us fuel up with. That means our pressure as consumers has the power to force change¢?"and it's our responsibility to act.
Will you pledge to join the global boycott of Chevron and Total? The boycott will last until the companies withdraw from Burma, or until the Burmese junta begins a genuine democratic transition and frees all political prisoners--including Aung San Suu Kyi. We'll deliver all the pledges and comments straight to the top management of Chevron and Total. You can see what brands to avoid in your country and take the pledge, at:

There's still about two and a half hours left to wish our illustrious and beloved chairman a happy birthday.
This short article from the AP via WWLP online caught my attention.
Readers from elsewhere in the country, how does this compare to your states?
Fellow citizens of Massachusetts, this is unacceptable. That's clear. What I don't know, and need input on, is what we can do about it. Idears?
The state reports about 1,800 homeless families were in shelters this week. That's up from 1,400 in June 2006.
State officials blame cuts in assistance and the recent housing crisis for the problem. And they're worried there's no end in sight.

This evening, I saw Mike Gravel on The News Hour. I don't *like* Mike, I **love** Mike! Far from being the baffoon the MSM portrays him as, he is sensible, intelligent and very engaging. I'm not wholly sold on his tax plan, and I've said for months that his only real chance is to team up with Dennis. But, I just think Mike is *terrific*!
I've just contributed at his ActBlue page. Join me and, since the MSM only understands money, help make Mike a "serious" candidate in their eyes, a candidate worthy of their precious and exalted airtime and talkinghead hotair.

Saturday evening, I caught a news snippet stating that the Catholic bishops of Massachusetts oppose Gov. Patrick's casino proposal. I heard this on the weekly diocescen TV news magazine program, which made no mention of other faith leaders. If anyone knows whether other religious leaders in Massachusetts have stated an opinion, and if so who and what the opinions are, let us know. I figure, the more opposition, the better.
Ed O'Reilly is running for the senate seat currently held by John Kerry. I have decided to support Ed's candidacy both because of my disappointment and dissatisfaction with the junior senator and because, from what I've seen, Ed is a committed Progressive who will fight for our state's and our nation's veterans, children, union members and lGBT people. I didn't ask him about race matters, but I infer that he supports *all* Civil Rights. He's a trifle weak on disability issues, his focus as a lawyer being on criminal law. But, he certainly seems sympathetic and interested.
The kicker? Ed identifies himself as a Dean Democrat!
You can read Ed's blog and contribute to his campaign.

WELLINGTON, New Zealand - Two centuries after a dazzlingly feathered parrot called the Rimitara lorikeet disappeared from the Cook Islands, a breeding colony of the birds has been re-established with the help of the islands' royalty.
About 100 years ago after the parrots died out on the Cook Islands, the queen of Rimitara Island in French Polynesia to the east issued a royal decree that locals say saved the last naturally occurring population of the lorikeet, one of the Pacific's most beautiful parrots.

Interestingly, the native Polynesian rat is herbivorous and thus not a threat to the lorikeet. It was the black or ship's rat, arriving in the 1800's, that put an end to the lorikeet. But, according to the article, unspecified measures are being taken to make sure that the ship's rat does not come to Atiu, even though all the other islands in French Polynesia are infested. I hope it works.
Doubtless, everyone has seen this already, but I only came across it a few days ago. What a swell idear!
If you want to do your part to help convince Al Gore to run for President, join our two cents campaign. All you have to do is put two pennies in an envelope, and send them to Office of the Honorable Al Gore, 2100 West End Avenue, Suite 620, Nashville, TN 37203. You can include a note that youâ??ll send a proper contribution once he announces heâ??s in the race. We believe that Gore and his advisors will take note of this tangible evidence that America needs him to run for president. It is simple, wonâ??t take long to do and will only cost you half a dollar including stamp and envelope and, of course, the two pennies. So dive into the couch and retrieve the pennies that will represent your opinion, and letâ??s get Al in the race!
Though I saw this headline yesterday, only just now did I read the story:
Bids Sought for Springfield Dike Repairs
Nice to know that it took Katrina to bring attention to our Connecticut River flood control system, and that it's taken two years for Springfield and neighboring cities to get around to repairs and maintenance. :P

As I have said, my dream team for 2008 is Gore/Dean. To my shock, a search revealed that no group here at democrats.org already existed to promote this ticket. However, your intrepid Cat has filled this void with the creation of Gore/Dean 2008. Now there is a gathering place for all those who share my vision of a Gore/Dean administration being sworn in on Jan. 20, 2009.
The last time I checked the news, around midnight, the headline indicated that negotiations between the United Auto Workers and General Motors were going well. When I checked again just now, the headline was, "UAW Calls National Strike Against GM." I don't yet fully understand the reason for this strike. But my union, the National Writers Union, is affiliated with the UAW. So, I'm on strike too.
Here's the most recent news update from the UAW web site, "UAW shocked by GMâ??s failure to recognize worker contributions; sets strike deadline for 11 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 24." Hopefully, more details will be forthcoming.

TORONTO - Governments of almost 200 countries have agreed to speed the elimination of a major greenhouse gas that depletes ozone, U.N. and Canadian officials said Saturday, describing a deal they said was a significant step toward fighting global warming.
The agreement reached Friday night will accelerate a treaty to freeze and phase out hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) which are used in home appliances, some refrigerators, hair sprays and air conditioners, said Nick Nuttall, spokesman for the United Nations Environment Program.
"With this plan of an accelerated freeze and accelerated phase-out, we could have potentially significant benefits arising in terms of combating climate change and ozone loss," Nuttall said. "It's a remarkable change in how we view the issue of climate change."

WASHINGTON - Climate scientist Michael Mann runs down the list of bad global warming news: The world is spewing greenhouse gases at a faster rate. Summer Arctic sea ice is at record lows. The ice sheets in Greenland and West Antarctica are melting quicker than expected.
Is he the doomsayer global warming skeptics have called him?
Mann laughs. This Penn State University professor - and many other climate scientists - are sunny optimists. Hope blooms in the hottest of greenhouses.
Climate scientists say mankind is on the path for soaring temperatures that will melt polar ice sheets, raise seas to dangerous levels, and trigger mass extinctions. But they say the most catastrophic of consequences can and will be avoided.

Casinos not likely for years, even if proposal succeeds
Seems to me I've said that.
Snarkiness aside, this article gives a useful outline of the legislative path the casino proposal will follow.

The AP Reports that in the next fifty to one hundred fifty years, global sea levels will rise one meter. This seemingly small increase will drown some twenty-five thousand square miles in the continental US alone. There is no mention of lakes and rivers, but presumably their water levels will also rise. According to the article, the rise in sea level cannot be affected by any measure now undertaken by mankind.
In such a perspective, Gov. Patrick's casino plan seems even more foolish than I originally thought it.

This week the Senate voted on an amendment popularly known as the MoveOn Amendment. It's statement of purpose reads:
To express the sense of the Senate that General David H. Petraeus, Commanding General, Multi-National Force-Iraq, deserves the full support of the Senate and strongly condemn personal attacks on the honor and integrity of General Petraeus and all members of the United States Armed Forces.
It passed with a vote of 72 to 25 (3 senators not voting). Below is a list of the Democrats who voted for the amendment: Read More »
