AFFERTY: If John McCain doesn't stop changing his position on the issues, he threatens to make John Kerry look like an amateur. In order for McCain to win in November, he has to appeal to both the traditional Republican base and to independents. Dana Milbank in the Washington Post says that's a delicate dance, and if McCain's not careful, "he's liable to break a hip." Of course, any doctor will tell you a broken hip can be very difficult to recover from.
On Iraq, the economy, guns, and God, McCain is to the right. On immigration, campaign finance reform, and global warming, McCain is to the left. Sort of reminiscent of John Kerry back in 2004. McCain went after Barack Obama yesterday for proposing a windfall tax on the oil companies. A month ago McCain said he was willing to consider a windfall tax on the oil companies. What about offshore drilling? During his run for president in 2000, McCain was against it. Now he's for it, saying the state should decide if they want to drill for oil off their coastlines. This could cost him big-time in states like California and Florida which are very environmentally conscious. Then there are the Bush tax cuts, McCain was against them - twice - now he's for them. McCain has also called for the U.S. detention center at Guantanamo Bay to be closed down, and torture banned. But last week he criticized the Supreme Court's ruling that detainees there should have access to U.S. courts, calling the Supreme Court decision one of the worst decisions in the history of this country. So here's the question. How clear is it where John McCain stands on the issues?

Read an interesting post on Daily Kos that highlighted McCain's anti military personnel voting record:
# McCain has repeatedly voted against amendments in the Senate that would have...covered such important services as improving care at veterans’ hospitals, providing mental health services to soldiers with post-traumatic stress disorder and substance abuse problems. [2006 Senate Vote #7, 2/2/2006]
# In 2006, McCain voted against the Kerry amendment that would eliminate increased fees and co-payments for veterans in the TRICARE health care program by raising the discretionary spending limit by approximately $10 billion. The provisions would have been fully offset by eliminating creating corporate tax breaks. [2006 Senate Vote #67, 3/16/2006]
# McCain was one of only 13 Republicans to vote against an amendment that added over $400 million for inpatient and outpatient care for veterans. [2006 Senate Vote #98, 4/26/2006]
# McCain voted against increasing funding for veterans health care by $2.8 billion in 2006. [2005 Senate Vote #55, 3/16/2005]
# McCain joined his Republican Senate cohorts in opposing exempting all military personnel and veterans from means testing in bankruptcy cases. [2005 Senate Vote #13, 3/1/2005]
# McCain opposed an amendment that would reduce from 60 to 55 the age at which certain members of the National Guard and Army reserves could receive retirement benefits. [2004 Senate Vote #136, 6/23/2004]
# Senator McCain opposed $322 million in funding for "battlefield clearance and safety equipment for U.S. troops in Iraq." A reduction in Iraqi reconstruction funds would have funded the additional protection for troops in the battlefield. [2003 Senate Vote #376, 10/2/2003]
# McCain voted against an amendment that would increase spending on the veterans health care program TRICARE by $20.3 billion over 10 years to members of the National Guard and Reserves. The increase would be offset by a reduction in tax cuts. [2003 Senate Vote #81, 3/25/2003]
# McCain opposed an amendment that would have increased veterans spending by $13 billion from 1997-2002 to be offset by closing corporate tax preferences and reinstating expired taxes. [1996 Senate Vote #115, 5/16/1996]

REASON GONE MAD
By Bill Shein

Did you know that Sen. Barack Obama hates America? If you didn't, then you haven't been paying attention to Internet rumors that continue to find their way into political reporting done by America's so-called "news" organizations.
See, sometimes Obama doesn't put his hand on his heart during the national anthem, which proves that he is running for president to destroy our nation, right? Why else would CNN ask in an online poll, "Does Barack Obama show the proper patriotism for someone who wants to be president of the United States?"
Obama also doesn't wear an American flag lapel pin, a mandatory accessory in Washington (especially for politicians who like to undermine the Constitution in the name of defending the Constitution). Why? According to a rumor on the Internet, it's because a lapel pin would interfere with the hidden microphone that connects Obama directly to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
No wonder Obama says he'll meet Ahmadinejad without preconditions. Obviously, it's so he can personally give the man a suitcase packed with highly enriched uranium.
You saw the picture of Obama in a turban, yes? He says it's the traditional garb of his Kenyan relatives, but according to rumors on the Internet, the photo was actually taken during his al-Qaida induction ceremony. And it's probably true!
(CNN.com poll question: "Will Barack Obama's duties as a member of al-Qaida distract him from his work as president of the United States?")
This jibes with rumors that Obama is a "secret Muslim," a story circulated in e-mails with subject lines like, "FW: fwd: Re: Re: Obama's a secret Muslim! Read this now! Walter Cronkite wrote it!"
How does Obama practice as a secret Muslim on the campaign trail, anyway? Does he fall to his knees five times a day and say, "Sorry, I've lost a contact lens," and then quietly chant his daily verses from the Quran?
Have you heard that his full name is "Barack Hussein Obama?" Well, it's not. I read on the Internet that his name is, "Barack Saddam Hussein Osama Obama bin Laden al Jihadi," and that it was given to him during that al-Qaida ceremony.
Another Internet rumor says that Sen. Obama bin Laden al Jihadi has personally carried out no fewer than six different suicide attacks. Which can only mean one thing: The junior senator from Illinois is not just a radical Islamic terrorist, but also an undead zombie.
Don't believe it? Just wait until the debate next fall when Obama suddenly attacks Sen. John McCain and eats his brain on live television. And watch out, debate moderator Jim Lehrer: You'll be next!
(Asks CNN.com, "Can an undead zombie like Barack Obama be an effective president of the United States? Vote now â€" before he eats your brain!")
Oh, by the way, don't vote for Obama before you read about his activities with the Weather Underground in the 1960s. According to stories on the Internet, Obama was mixing explosives and plotting violent revolution when he was just a toddler.
(CNN.com poll: "Since Barack Obama was part of the Weather Underground in the 1960s, he's probably at least 65 years old. How does he stay so young-looking?")
Here's my favorite rumor: Nearly all of the so-called rumors about Obama are, in fact, created and spread by Obama and his campaign. Since Internet rumors are, in 2008, covered like news, Obama himself can debunk the Obama-created rumors and get some free press â€" something which now seems to happen almost daily-NOW WWW.FIGHTTHESMEARS.COM
It's a smart, groundbreaking media strategy that capitalizes on the sorry state of American journalism. And it's yet another reason why Barack Obama will win the presidency â€" the prize sought by every politician who hates America.
