British Telegraph Reports Obama In Talks With Other Dems To Pay Campaign Debt, Discuss Cabinet Spots
June 1: The Telegraph, a newspaper published in Britain, reports today that the Obama campaign is in talks with the Hillary Clinton campaign, with an offer to pay her campaign debts when she withdraws from the presidential race next week. Here are a few paragraphs from the article:
"Another Democrat who has discussed strategy with friends in the Obama inner circle said that Mr Obama was openly considering asking Mrs Clinton to join his cabinet, alongside two other former presidential rivals: John Edwards, who is seen as a likely attorney general; and Joe Biden, who is a leading contender to become Secretary of State.
"Informal talks have already begun between Obama and Clinton fundraisers to discuss a merger, enabling Mr Obama to pay off Mrs Clinton's campaign debts of $11 million.
"Senior figures in the Obama camp have told Democrat colleagues that the offer to Mrs Clinton of a cabinet post as health secretary or to steer new legislation through the Senate will be a central element of their peace overtures to the New York senator. "

Washington,DC (May 30): Former presidential candidate and chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Sen. Joseph Biden (D-DE) told Washington Times reporters Thursday that Sen. Barack Obama wants him to "play a more prominent" and "deeply involved" role in his campaign.
Sen. Biden, a superdelegate, has not officially endorsed Obama, but did say he would be the likely nominee after next week's primaries. "He has asked me to play a more prominent role, not in an administration, in the campaign," Biden remarked. "I would be more available... and I said once he gets the nomination, if he gets the nomination, then I'll do whatever he wants. I'll do whatever he asks me to do."
Biden said he'd "work my heart out" for the party and said he made such a promise to both Mr. Obama and Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York.

Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Sen. Joe Biden (D-DE) will be a guest this morning, May 18, on ABC TV's "This Week with George Stephanopolous."
They'll discuss President Bush's remarks to the Israeli Knesset earlier this week. Was Bush engaging in partisan politics overseas? Sen. Biden will also talk about the president's role in the 2008 presidential campaign, and the troubles for the GOP here at home.

Wilmington, Delaware (April 4): Today marks the 40th anniversary of Martin Luther King's death, and in memory of the slain civil rights leader, the Wilmington Urban League is presenting several civil rights awards at a ceremony today. One of the award recipients is Senator Joe Biden.
The event, "The Equal Opportunity Celebration: Lions and Legends," will showcase former Mayor James H. Sills, Dr. Woodrow Wilson and Renee Du Jean and Delaware Senators Biden and Carper, along with Rep. Mike Castle.
"We are so pleased to honor the legacy of Dr. King by celebrating six Delawareans who have fought to increase equality and improve opportunities in our community," Deborah T. Wilson, the Urban League's president CEO, said.
Senators Biden and Carper and Rep. Castle will receive the Whitney M. Young Jr. Award. Young is the former president and CEO of the National Urban League who worked to diversify large corporations and served as an adviser to three presidents. The Young Award honors outstanding contributions and leadership in business, industry and government.
Tickets are still available for the event, which is from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at the Center on the Riverfront, 800 S.Madison St., Wilmington. Tickets are $50 each and $500 for a full table. For tickets, call 622-4300 or seewww.mwul.org.

Joe Biden plans to quickly move a bill this week that would reauthorize President Bushâ??s global AIDS program, reflecting an emerging bipartisan consensus on the issue.
Last Friday (March 7) Sen. Biden introduced a bipartisan bill whose cosponsors include Richard G. Lugar of Indiana, the panelâ??s ranking Republican, and Edward M. Kennedy , D-Mass., chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee.
Both sides have sought compromise from mutual interest: Democrats want to put their stamp on the program, and Bush wants to secure its reauthorization as part of his legacy.
