New data shows that health insurance cancellations are already up 24% in the wake of Trump signing his Big Ugly Bill into law and Republicans refusing to extend the enhanced Affordable Care Act premium tax credits.
A newly released study by the Commonwealth Fund shows a significant drop in Affordable Care Act enrollment, with families across America losing their insurance amidst Donald Trump’s affordability crisis and Republicans’ continued assault on healthcare. Plan cancellations rose sharply between January and March, up nearly 25% over last year.
The study also found that families who managed to hang on to their insurance were often forced to move to a lower-coverage tier with smaller premiums but higher out-of-pocket costs, more expensive prescriptions, and less care. This comes after sign-ups during open enrollment already fell by 1.2 million people, a 5% drop from the prior year and the largest decline since the marketplaces opened in 2014.
In response to this new study, DNC Chair Ken Martin released the following statement:
“Thanks to Donald Trump and Republicans’ all-out assault on healthcare, families throughout our country have lost their ability to see a doctor, afford their prescriptions, and get the coverage they need. While Republicans continue to rip insurance away from millions of Americans and jack up prices, Democrats are working tirelessly to expand access to healthcare, bring down costs, and make life more affordable.”
REMINDER: This surge in families losing their healthcare is happening in the wake of Republicans repeatedly refusing to extend the enhanced Affordable Care Act premium tax credits, which caused premiums to skyrocket by an average of 58%. Trump also continues to brag about his Big Ugly Bill, which includes $1 trillion in cuts to Medicaid, puts over 300 rural hospitals at risk of closing, and is expected to cause 10 million people to lose their care.
Additionally, Trump and Republicans have jacked up everyday costs and caused people to pay more for just about everything — from rising gas and fertilizer prices due to their unpopular war of choice in Iran, to rising grocery prices due to their tariffs.
