4/3/08 CNN) â€" Former President Jimmy Carter all but said Wednesday he plans to cast his superdelegate vote for Barack Obama.

Speaking with a Nigerian paper while in Abuja, Carter noted several reasons why he might be leaning toward the Illinois senator.

"Don’t forget that Obama won in my state of Georgia," Carter said. "My town, which is home to 625 people, is for Obama, my children and their spouses are pro-Obama. My grandchildren are also pro-Obama."

"As a superdelegate, I would not disclose who I am rooting for but I leave you to make that guess," Carter added.

The Carter Center confirmed to CNN the newspaper did quote Carter accurately.

Responding to the comments, Clinton campaign spokesman Howard Wolfson said Thursday, "Both Senator Clinton and President Clinton have a great deal of respect for President Carter and have enjoyed their relationship with him over the years, and obviously he is free to make whatever decision he thinks is appropriate with regard to presidential choice."

Wolfson also acknowledged "people will be interested in the choice that he makes."

Carter's remarks are the latest from the former president that suggest he is backing Obama over rival Hillary Clinton, although he has made no official endorsement. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal in January, Carter said Obama's campaign has been "extraordinary and titillating for me and my family."

He also said then that Obama "will be almost automatically a healing factor in the animosity now that exists, that relates to our country and its government."

Another Superdelegate that will very soon come out directly for Senator Obama.

As I have said before the Superdelegates are starting to make their voices heard and moving from undecided to Obama.

I belive at some point even Al Gore will support Obama before the Denver Convention happens .

I am sure Senator Obama in his private talks with former Vice president Al Gore are about opne support aswell.

I wouldnt be to proud of this one. Those who were voting adults when Carter was President had to go through the 4-year embarrassment. Hmmm...lets hope if Obama gets in he doesn't think too long at 3 AM about making an executive decision.

Al Sharpton needs to come out now as well. Then we have all of the "good old boy network" that he is running on to change.

Clinton has solicited Sharpton's support. You never know, maybe she will be the one to get it.

Carter was a better former President than President...He managed a country that needs to be run! But he is a clean guy...

Couldn't agree more. He understands his failures back then and has probably surmised Clinton would repeat the same mistakes of micromanaging.

If we had continued Carter's energy policy, or his human rights foreign policy, do you really think the world would not be a better place now?
Did you vote for Reagan over Carter?

I voted for Carter. But remember this, if it was not for the ineffective and disastrous Presidency of Jimmy Carter there would never have been a Reagan revolution, think about it.

Carter was sandwiched between Nixon, Ford, Reagan and Bush, Sr. At least Carter normalized relations with African countries and withdrew support for the Shah in Iran. Other foreign policy disasters which Reagan made worse. But the dye was already cast. Keep in mind also that the Reagan Revolution was supported by Democrats who crossed over.

Mel - you must be dismissing all the facts for you to believe that Hillary had all the big endorsements and all the big money Barack was in 3 rd place in November of 2007 in Iowa. Can't dismiss facts

poor job of campaigning in Iowa
no plan after Super Tuesday
no plan for caucus states

We cannot dismiss the facts
