"We Are All in It Together, Clinton Says"
By Holly Ramer, Associated Press Writer

Clinton: Shared Prosperity Should Replace 'On Your Own' Society

Presidential hopeful Hillary Rodham Clinton outlined a broad economic vision Tuesday, saying it's time to replace an "on your own" society with one based on shared responsibility and prosperity.

The Democratic senator said what the Bush administration touts as an "ownership society" really is an "on your own" society that has widened the gap between rich and poor.

"I prefer a 'we're all in it together' society," she said. "I believe our government can once again work for all Americans. It can promote the great American tradition of opportunity for all and special privileges for none."

That means pairing growth with fairness, she said, to ensure that the middle-class succeeds in the global economy, not just corporate CEOs.

"There is no greater force for economic growth than free markets. But markets work best with rules that promote our values, protect our workers and give all people a chance to succeed," she said. "Fairness doesn't just happen. It requires the right government policies."

I'd love to hear more detail on this.

that seems to be stating the obvious, at least if anyone studied the Industrial Revolution,
or even the 'trickle down' theory.

Then again, given the current state of education in this country, perhaps it needs to be said.

PS Who besides me thinks that 2 working parents plus computers and Nintendo have more to do with low literacy than bad teachers do?

I think it's more lack of funding that's driving down our educations. California is now going to spend more on it's prison system than it's state college/university system.

This sucks

I actually agree with the sentiment BUT think that, practically speaking, Americans are not ready for what, IMO, will be viewed as making America more "socialist".

The thing about HIllary is she is right on when it comes to her ideas about improving American society and always has been. I noticed (was it Edwards??) others now talking about universal health care. MMM. Hillary was trying to do that in 1994. She wrote "It Takes A Village," which was wonderful and again talked about our shared responsibilities as a society. Now she is talking about what would essentially be greater government intervention in our supposedly "hands off" (ha ha) capitalist economy. She will be charged with using the government to redistribute wealth, which many Americans equate, quite honestly, with communism.

So the problem is, in my mind, is that Hillary is ahead of her time. Eventually our society will deteriorate so significantly that we will have to become more interdependent (with the assistance of the government). HOWEVER, I don't think we have deteriorated ENOUGH yet to allow her ideas, which are right on, to manifest themselves into actual policy. It is sort of like putting her ideas in your "wish list" rather than your shopping cart when shopping on-line.

Bottom line, she is right on almost all the time BUT I don't think the GENERAL American population is ready to accept that. I think it will be many many years before they are, which sucks.
