I have posted it previously so now it is a blog. Many do not know that my mother was Jewish. And some do not know that some of my family died in concentration camps or that my Great Uncle came up from Brazil, because their daughter had an eye infection and they would not let them off on Ellis Island so they went to South America. My Great Grandfather sent money for medicine, and money to bring them back to Ellis Island. Or some do not know the fear was so deep that they became Christians so their children would not have the burden that they carried. Or, that my Great Aunt had numbers tatooed on her arm. My ancestors were slaves, millions were killed over the centuries and some still live in the Holy land with fear everyday of their lives. I could say, we just don't fit anywhere. I could complain that we are called all sorts of names, I have heard them in both German, Yiddish and English. I could tell about my Grandfather holding a tea pot on a boat at 4 years old, and people dying on that ship. And he never left the State only when my brother died. I could tell you he was a dirt farmer and his wife saved every penny during the depression so their children could go to college. Or that my grandmother could not vote until she was much older, or that she wanted to work in a professional job but it was not fit for a woman. We all have stories of discrimination, we all have hurts, we all have hopes. We are one people, you and I. There are more stories of Asians, Indians, Hispanics and the list goes on. But one thing we have together, we are Americans.

I see the written word and I have heard the voices of racism, and I think I know it a little about it. I don't call out your a racist because someone might not agree with me on this blog. Calling me a racist pains me, and some have. We are Americans, and I have freedom of speech, if they do not like my ideas - they can't see me on a blog, over the wave of these words. They do not know I am of Jewish descent. I never to them you hate because I am a Jew. You wont do this because I am a Jew.

I have been called a racist, when in the blog it had nothing to do with race. My best friend is Black, and even in her race she will be treated badly because her skin is darker than most. I really do not understand it at all, it is so narrow, so small.

My feeling is we can be purple, green, yellow or blue, and the reality is about being an American. The whole beautiful mix of DNA and colors. We are like a painting and we need all the colors to belong together.

When are we all going to stop focusing on the color of our skin? That is my question, that is my hope. I find racists in every color and it makes my heart break.

I have a sort of bizarre sense of humor

so forgive this being weird.

Here's my official stance on racism:

People are like eggs. They may come in different shades of light and dark... and they might be large or small... and they may or may not have a hard shell around them. But once you scramble them up and add cheese, they all kinda taste the same.

For those of us older we know how it once was any nationality/ism. I recall a lot of that when I was young. Jews, Germans, Irish, Italians and Poles..are were discriminated against. Perhaps it is because we a country of such diverse origins.

There are so many ways to discrimnate, race, color, sex and class.

As the country grows and matures all the 'isms are fading. The younger we are, the less color, race and sex matter.

now...it seems to be calling people sexist if they are Obama people and racist if they are Hillary people. Noene of that is true really, although there will always be a few. The real name calling steems from anger and fruistration of winning and lossing the races that were so bitterly fought. I have really not see racism here or sexism. Just angry and bitter people that vent at times and use 'cards' they know will sting out of frustration and anger.

We can agree on this.

BTW

I have some Jewish ancestry in the family. (In laws - not my own directly) I also have in-laws and cousins who are Black - also Italian. My family's just kinda all over the map. Luckily, my parents were hippies, and I kinda was brought up with the whole peace, love, sex and drugs thing. Granted, parts of that were probably not the best environment for a kid - but there truly wasn't racism.

Italians especially from Sicily were invaded and most have black blood in them. This was one of the reasons for the hatred fro blacks...from long ago. A lot of this has ceased as well.

We are all kinda 'muts' with all the mixing. Heinz 57 as my kids like to say.

HAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I LOVE IT!!! DTree finally needs ME to get outta something. HEHEH!

No, he was making a joke about the KETCHUP. You mentioned Heinz57. A while back before we got to be friends, Sandi and I had kind of a running back and forth about Ketchup - the whole John Kerry relationship with the Ketchup company thing. It started out as an argument that quickly turned into a joke. DTree was just referencing back to the ketchup joke.

This is tooo funny.

BTW: I didn't know that about Italians. Interesting. I'd agree we're all mutts. My own brand of muttliness is Irish/Cherokee.

When are we going to stop focusing on the color of our skin?
By BobVADemHawk Jul 21st 2008 at 4:44 pm EDT
To answer the question above is fairly simple. Once the baby boomers are gone is the answer. I was born and raised in VA. One of our counties was named in the Brown V. Board decision. I know a lot of racists over the age of fifty. I know very few under the age of fifty.

Back in the 60's, the saying was, "Never trust anyone over thirty". Fifty has become the new thirty as far as I am concerned. The spoiled and incompetent baby boom generation has ruined the great nation our WW2 generation fought for and preserved for us.

P.S. For the record, I'm 42.

I visited a family in Mississippi, and I saw the discrimination and got in the wrong line at the grocery store, and my husbands grandmother went crazy. I am in my 50's, in Wyoming I saw Indians being treated horribly, I have seen Hispanics being treated horribly. I have seen Jews treated horribly. It is in my opinion about culture. Barry Goldwater had the Hispanics workers sleep in the Orange Groves outside of Phoenix. And, they too had to drink out of separate water fountains.

It is not about age or color, I truly believe it is about culture. There are many whom are over 50 that do not believe in discrimination.

Of course there are and I didn't mean to imply that all baby boomers are racist. However, on a per capita basis, it has been my experience that there are far more racists over fifty then there are under fifty.

Re: I resent your slamming my generation.

I agree whole heartedly. The too old, it is our generation. When I was young I thought I knew everything and my mom did not. As I grew older, I found she had more wisdom than I have attained to this day. :) I surely miss her.

Thanks for your perspective Sandi

I don't think there is anyone on this blog anymore who hasn't been called racist at least once. i sure know i have.

will it ever stop? i hope so. but if it doesn't, we can at least do our part by trying to focus on the things that really matter. there's a lot of emotion flowing around here, and i think it will continue until at least after the convention.

all the isms are out there: sexism, racism, ageism, antisemitism, homophobia - but we must remember that as democrats, we are the ones who are supposed to be unified in standing up against all these things!

we are becoming a bigger party as a result of the 50 state strategy and because of our 2 unique candidates this time around.

it will be up to us to try and hold together all these divergent forces as a coalition in order to win in November.

The stakes are too high for us not to succeed.

peace.

I am soooooooooo excited about the 50 state strategy! We are changing our Party's demographics and will have close contests in states we never thought we could win. Hats off to Howard for that!

MY MOTHER
By Eleanor Roosevelt Hillary Heartbump Remains Jul 21st 2008 at 6:05 pm EDT
Hey Sandi,
I just wanted to let you know that my Holy Mother is a Jew. Her name is Mary; she was a Macabee and she's the major director of traffic in my life. She's my middle manager and strongest advocate as you know how jewish moms can be.
Grew up in a tight neighborhood where my friend's mom was tatooed from Concentration Camp. Believe it or not, she was married to a German Officer. When he was killed, she was courted by the other German officers, until they found out she was a Jew. They sent her to the camp and she remembers when the Americans soldiers came and rescued them. She ended up remarrying an American Officer and had two wonderful sons. She was pretty wonderful herself.
The one here on earth is Sicilian, Irish and Mexicana (I think).
We arrived via Ellis too.
