Restore Memorial Day

I prefer the traditional Memorial Day.

Originally, Memorial Day was called Decoration Day and it occurred each year on May 30. Then, someone got the great idea of moving it to the last Monday of May, which would provide a 3-day weekend for most U.S. workers.

And totally destroy the meaning of the day.

The day was meant as a day of remembrance. A day of solemnity. One of national pride in our fallen service members.

Now, it's just a day for big savings on gas grills at the Gargantuan Home store (take the back streets, Main Street is closed for some parade or other).

Move the day back to it's original home, May 30. That's where it belongs. There are plenty of other days for sales.

to put flowers on the graves of all family members who have passed. We start in LaPorte, IN and end up in Winimac. We do it every year.My Grandfather was a World War II Vet in China/Burma/India and this day was very important to him. We have not forgotten that it is a day of rememberance. I agree with your post completely.

Sales, shopping, eating, drinking....every holiday has become a mass of gluttony.

As a child, Memorial Day always provoked odd feelings. I was born on May 30th....and every year for my birthday, there was a day filled with TV coverage of solemn parades, flags lining the cemeteries, etc. But I always got my birthday off from school...my own official morbid holiday. :-/

I feel for you. I was born on New Year's Day.
Also, my husband's birthday is Sept.11 and my niece will be 1 on the 4th of July. No kidding!

Yikes....well, at least you and your niece get firework displays!

I was 9 months pregnant on 9/11. I was in shock thinking of bringing another child into this kind of world....but when she was born 2 weeks later, her innocence and beauty reminded me what like is all about and what kind of world we were trying to build. It's hard to believe it's almost been 7 years....seems like yesterday.

I understand. My son turned two in March (not on a holiday!)and I felt/feel the same way! And hopefully they will grow up to be smarter than we are and not have to worry about such things.
