When we speak of organ and tissue donation, we often refer to end-of-life gifts to victims of diseases. My family was introduced to donation when we lost our son, Ken. He donated his heart, liver, pancreas and kidneys to four folks in need.

Sometimes, however, there are smaller gifts that can be given that provide significant benefit to the recipients.

Today, my daughter joins my wife and sons as a donor! She is donating much of her hair (as her mom and one brother have) to Locks Of Love, a not-for-profit organization that helps kids who have lost their hair. It's taken about two years of growth and care, but she's ready to go from waist-length to shoulder-length hair to help someone less fortunate.

I'm pretty proud of my 11 year-old for making that choice.

And, proud you should be, Dad!! You've done well in raising a family in the spirit of giving of themselves to help others in need. I commend you!!

You should be proud!

My brother-in-law just received a liver transplant this past week. He is doing better than he has in a very long time!

These donations are nothing more than love passed along.

Today is the first anniversary of my brother-in-law's donations. He had a history of heart problems and, on July 3, 2006, had a fatal heart attack.

Chuck donated his corneas, skin tissue and long bones to help someone, somewhere.

So, Cato, my give best to your bro-in-law. May he live long and happily.

My boyfriend keeps telling me to cut my hair

I donated to Locks of Love last year and I'm currently growing my hair out again so that I can reach the 10" minimum requirement. They do accept hair donations between 6" and 10" but those donations are sold to offset the cost for making a wig. Donations 10" in length or longer are used by Locks of Love to actually make a wig for an ill or recovering child.
