Should We Disband?

21 months ago we formed a “527” Pac to use as a vehicle to fund our organization and Progressive Issues and Candidates. We had a hope that there would be some large donors step forth to contribute towards the maintenance of our programs and sites. This has not happened. For that matter neither have the small donations. There have been a few but not enough to maintain an office and pay the bills.

Because of the last 7 months of hospitals, therapies and doctors, I haven’t been able to devote the time to WeDems as I should have or wanted to, but while still not up to par; I am back at my desk now.

During this time I have sold off a bunch of my father’s and grandfather’s horse drawn equipment (left to me), two tractors that were old in years but great machines, and a couple of junk vehicles to scrap yards (missed the high prices now being paid for scrap iron, of course), and with income only from Social Security Disability we can’t keep the PAC going, so I am ready to close it.

I will maintain the website and blog, and of course through the kind help offered by Edward at mytown.ca, which has agreed to host the site for WE! Our weekly magazine for 10 years, we will continue to provide an avenue for Progressives to meet, discuss (on our Yahoo site) and organize. We have also upgraded our mailing lists, but you will have to signup again by clicking on the first page of the site along the top bar where it says: “Sign In/Join

Barack Obama our candidate for President has developed a magnificent site “BarackObama.com” and organization that is picking up the slack that WeDems, MoveOn and others haven’t been able to fill to the utmost, and coupled with their merging with the Democrats.org site and the 50 State Strategy of Howard Dean, they are poised to do what we could only dream of doing.

Obama believes as we do, he likes to think outside the box, and isn’t afraid to be on the “wrong” side of Washington insiders, even though to a degree he is one. He thinks about Iraq and climate warming and health care as we do. So I say lets support him anyway we can with our limited resources.

Today we are stronger because of men like Howard Dean and Barack Obama, we refuse to accept money from lobbyists and special interest groups, maybe that is why we are in the dire straits we are today, but I feel better knowing we were able to maintain our principles, and if we could do it over again I would do the same thing.

With over 6,000 members and thousands more readers of WE!, plus special friends like the 2,000+ who have joined me on Democrats.org, not to mention our sites on Yahoo, Facebook, MySpace and Linkin among others we have made an impact on Progressive politics in this country and with any luck will continue to do so.

My question to those of you who read this, are we making the right decision? Should we scale back, dissolve the 527 and hope that enough contributions will be forth coming to continue our efforts, or just close down and let things run their course as they will?

It is not easy for me to do this, as it was not easy to decentralize the organization allowing each of you to form chapters in your own areas, but that is working so “in for a penny, in for a pound” as the saying goes.

Let me know what you think.

Best Regards,

Ron McBride

Chairman WeDemocrats.org

Publisher of WE! Weekly online magazine

PS: Just was informed that MoveOn is also dissolving their 527, announcement was in the NY Times. Ron

oops this goes with my link

“But in light of the new politics offered by Barack Obama, I’ve come to believe it’s time to close the 527 forever—and to challenge organizations on the right to do the same,†Eli Pariser, the head of MoveOn wrote to supporters today. “Not relying on big donors means that all of us, together, have to take responsibility.â€

but as Politico reported today there are “no serious†527s in operation supporting McCain’s bid, while Obama has seen outside support from several groups, including MoveOn.

reading the comments here is very interesting

I say hell no! McCain is going to throw some pretty awful stuff at Obama. Let's not be silly here :)
