Southern Strategy: Flashback

Now that we've had our first debate, it's time to start talking about how we can win back the White House. But first let's go back to the 2004 primaries, specifically the South Carolina primary.

Do you remember what our front-runners did? They tried to get their good ol' boy on. Dean flashed his NRA card. Kerry said he was mainstream.

But do you remember who won? Edwards. Why? Despite popular opinion, it wasn't because he's the native son, but because he talked about jobs.

Democrats are not going to win in the South by saying we're all the same.

Democrats are not going to win in the South by having different photo-ops.

Democrats are not going to win in the South by sporting a bright orange Remington hat and going duck hunting.

Democrats will win in the South if they talk about the issues that are important in the South. If they talk about what concerns the voters, and how their specific plan will make things better, we will win.

A very simple first step will be to ask the voters if they are better off now than they were four years ago? Or eight years ago?

If not, it's time for a change.

and you response sounds like a republican talking point. Instead of bashing candidates state why you support someone else or better yet do a blog entry for them.

here is a blog entry you might find informative.

Stating who I support is not the idea of this blog series. The point is how Democrats can win in the South. The point of this post is that Edwards was the most real. He did not resort to trying some of the tricks politicans do in the South to try and win votes. He talked about the issues. If all our candidates do that, then we can win--that's the point.

My comment was to the person who posted the empty suit comment.

I do see where you are coming from , but I think it will take a little more than that. There's a false reputation that the South has about Democrats overall and the Democrats have done nothing at all to effectively deal with our bad reputation.

The South will not just listen to us talking about Jobs. We have to talk about Jesus and be real about it. We have to talk about responsibility and be real about it.We have to talk about Race Relations and be real about it. Whatever we talk about, we have to be real about it.

It takes more than pretending you are one of them in order to get their vote. You have to be real. It's what everyone else in America wants. I don't know why we assume that South is any different. They want someone who's real. They don't care where they come from so much as long as they are real and they can be trusted.

Ya know?

Agreed on the post

While I disagree with the replies on Edwards, I do agree on the original post. The south is not impossible if you show up and adress the issues that southerners care about. I am sorry but the only one that is doing that is Edwards again.

Not just the South,

but all people want some honesty. All people want their leader to be real, honest and be able to put a sentence together with out looking like a bozo.

Nice post

I hope I never hear another candidate affecting a southern accent, and God help us if Edwards ever tried speaking in Bahston or Georgetownese!
