whew, she got all fired up yesterday!! oprah's guest was michael moore, and the topic was health insurance. she also featured a health economist and an insurance company lobbyist. i cried through a lot of the show; the facts presented were staggering and depressing. more people go bankrupt, more people become homeless due to lack of health coverage than for any other reason in the world. if you missed the show, you can click the link for video and other highlights. it was a GREAT show.

Oprah Health Care show

Annie,
I only got to watch the last 20 minutes or so; and I saw how easy it was for the HMO rep to make it sound reasonable to exclude people. (Remember, the primary purpose of an insurance company is to make a profit for the shareholders.)

I have no job, I'm down to a couple of hundred dollars, and owe for COBRA (which means we'll be uninsured after tomorrow.), my rent, all our utilities, our car insurance is due mid October with no real prospects for a job.

I have a Masters degree and was making over $20/hr as a Med Tech before losing that job, so no one wants to hire me because they are convinced I'll quit when I can get a job that pays twice as much. (DUH!)

The truth is I need a 30-32 hour work week so I can have at least one day per week to take my wife to the doctor, etc.

I checked out Kentucky Medicaid and Kentucky food stamps today. I'm told I can get help through a local agency with the other pressing bills; but I am not going to have any kind of REAL health insurance after tomorrow!

So we're what 35th in quality of care and by far the most expensive health care in the industrialized world?

Oh! How easily the American people are fooled. Just say the world "socialized;" and they're too stupid to realize our highways, police departments, fire departments, libraries, etc., are also socialized.
