Clarification: Troll (person) versus Troll (post - aka: Trolling)

A Troll (person) is someone whose intent is to disrupt a blog/forum/mailing list/etc with posts designed to create outrage, anger, irritation, frustration, and so on and so forth.

A Troll (post) is a post exhibiting the above traits, yet may be posted by people whose intent is not primarily disruption.

The difference is subtle but important. You could have an Obama supporter whose goal is to have discussions about the campaigns, even one who is a True Believer, incapable of seeing the other side, or wholly ignorant, they may be happy to engage in conversations. They might engage in trolling in order to anger the Hillary supporters, but they are not True Trolls.

A True Troll doesn't engage in anything positive, or attempt to convince others of a different perspective or belief. Betty Lou, for example, with whom I completely disagree on about 99% of her posts, is not a Troll. (disclaimer: This does not mean that I categorically state that she has never posted a comment or blog that would qualify as trolling.)

I believe we have exceptionally few Trolls here, eBoone being perhaps the most famous for the old-timers. There have been a few others. But there HAVE been a lot of posts that were trolls. Generally, a troll makes no argument, makes an unsupported categorical statement, or makes a negative argument that has already been thoroughly discredited. (Of course, they say never to ascribe to malice that which can be explained by stupidity, but it's hard to believe, for example, that people honestly, in their heart-of-hearts, believe Obama to be a Muslim, or that Hillary had Vince Foster killed.) Unlike trolls, trolling is quite common here.

I never thought I'd miss JP Fenyo, but good God, at least he generated discussion about issues, even if it inevitably degenerated into his accusations of everyone being anti-Semitic.

Of course, he ended up being an Obama supporter, so I have mixed feelings. On the one hand, I would cringe if here were to start making claims as to what offices Obama was going to appoint him (he claimed Biden promised him a cabinet position as "First National Philosophic Advisor"), on the other hand, I would derive much schadenfreude watching the less scrupulous Hillary supporters go apoplectic and try to duke it out with him.

Your going to make me join the 'bring back Fenyo' group, aren't you? Can you imagine the ruckus of Fenyo vs. PUMA?! I'll buy front row seats...just to hear the Hungarian cursing loud enough. He was such a pompous sh*t, bless him.

FENYO, CAN YOU HEAR US? COME BACK!!!!!!

Yeah - I can't believe you don't remember that. Remember when he said you weren't defending him simply because he was white? I may even have saved a link to your post responding to that.

Remember his posts about people not thinking clearly because of their repressed sexuality and needing to spread their love around? Oh, my. Who knew PB had a swingers club?!

Oy, vey. I'm starting to miss the little Chief Philosopher in waiting....

Classic Fenyo...

Would you purchase a mug, t-shirt, post-cards set, poster, calendar, or any other official Free Advice Man item at Cafepress.com if you knew for fact that some day The Free Advice Man Story will be a major motion picture (possibly making these items valuable, appreciative limited collectibles)?

and

Would you send The Free Advice Man a test question to see if he really is as good at advising people as some famous and influential people have said he is?

Of course, majority rules. If you guys wanna start a campaign to bring back the little philosophicator, I'll back you - and eat copious amounts of Ibuprofen.

I don't think anyone is seriously considering a campaign for his return.

No...his return would not be good...especially because he'd probably insist on being given a computer to use at DNC headquarters. :)

As Gertrude Stein might say:

A troll is a troll is a troll. When Betty Lou or whatever her name is, behaves like a troll, she gets all ugly and belongs under the bridge with the rest of the trolls.

Transcendence and trolls
By Jacob Clark Jun 30th 2008 at 9:36 am EDT
What I mean to say, is a regular blogger who is sincere and not a troll generally, transcends the bounds of good taste and becomes, for the offending comment or post, a troll.

TINO's: trolls in name only, are misguided Bloggers exercising their particular hateful quirks on bad days. If Betty Lou is a TINO, then she is having a lot of bad days and needs prayers and sympathy.

Really, don't you think most fit that description... either they cannot see the truth because of long standing prejudices and fears or they use their anger, (which is a fear based emothion) to be oppositional in all things... both are products of insecurity insecurity. Negativity can only produce negativity... anyone who cannot see that is to be pitied and prayed for. IMHO

that is my opinion Marsha! if you threw off everyone with an ecentric personality or fears-- the blog would be empty.

Negative gestalts melt when confronted with truth. Marsha, I agree with you that most are probably TINO's. However, were you around when HAMM-RADIO FOR JOE BIDEN was banned? Some of these people are truly disruptive trolls. "Patriot08" is a prime example.

Jacob, I don't know enough to make judgements about who should be here. I just ignore or avoid the ones who are always negative. I only respond when I see a friend attacked. I certainly agree there are some who should not be here though.
peace,
marsha

Good points
By Mark in LA Jun 30th 2008 at 10:24 am EDT
I agree with your post. But I would like to see a handful or our worst offenders join Fenyo and eBoone in the Banned Internet Purgatory; wasting all eternity typing on keyboards that have no connection to a computer or other output device, ranting and raving into the void.

we agree time two. even a troll makes a good point, at times. there is social politics here , so being a good blogger or person makes no difference. be true to yourself! p.s. some of barack's switched supporters have given me a giggle. they aren't the best thing to ever happen to him.

By Jacob Clark Jun 30th 2008 at 2:27 pm EDT
One thing trolls do accomplish is help me to refine my talking points. Over time, that can be helpful.
