I am going to attempt driving to California, Tuesday from East TExas. Going to Los Angeles for a wedding. Where is the halfway city between Dallas, TX and Los Angeles because we all will stay overnight in that town and continue the drive the next day. Travaeling through El Paso, Tuscan AZ, and Phoenix, AZ. Have any of your driven this route before and about how long does it take to drive it? Any advice you can give will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

No problem, but you may want the northern route - not El Paso to Phoenix. Not sure though, depends on how far south tyler is from dallas. safe journey!

Tyler is dead east of Dallas almost close to Texas Louisiana border. Actually Tyler is approx. 1 hr from Shreveport and 1 hr to Dallas on I20.

I am trying to find Flagstaff on atlas. I see Albuquerque. Will I have to drive up in mountains with this route? We are hoping for a scenic view and souvenirs since we have never traveled this direction before.

I found it. You did say Arizona. I guess I am tired so I will go to bed. Thanks all of you. I can see my spelling is getting poor trying to blog with tired eyes. I will be traveling with my sister, my adult daughters/nephew and my 2 yr old grandson so everyone pray for us, please.

Excellent advice because it is all about saving gas. I am so terrified of what gas is costing in California. Right now in Tyler, we are paying around $3.77/gallon.

I have made the cross country drive to California. Back in 1984 when I moved from Alabama to Los Angeles. I drove through Dallas so I probably took the same route that you are planning. If I recall, after departing Dallas, my next night's stay was in Arizona. I am not certain which city, as I have been to most all areas of Arizona and am a bit cloudy on what city I visited for what reason. If you go through Tuscon, that is a wonderful city, especially the Scottsdale area.

A side note, the drive across Texas is boring. It is not until you reach El Paso that you will start to enter some of the most beautiful scenes that nature has to offer. Once you get to El Paso and continue your journey west, you will find that the drive is enjoyable as there is so very much to see. If you have the time, I strongly suggest taking a few side trips to see some of the history sites along the route. If you go to Tuscon, make a point of visiting the old western town of Tombstone, the town famous for the shoot out at the OK Corral. This town is like stepping back in time of the old west, as nothing has changed since those days of the town's infamy.

If you are driving through desert areas, I strongly encourage you, especially in mountainous regions, to turn off your A/C in these area. It is not uncommon to see cars on the side of the road that have over-heated. Many desert areas with steep mountain inclines will have signs posted telling drivers to turn off their A/C.
Enjoy your trip and welcome to Los Angeles when you arrive.

I forgot to mention, I just paid $4.50 per gallon for gas last Friday. That is about the average price around here, yet some areas have already exceeded the $5.00 per gallon mark.

Once you get to LA, perhaps you may want to park your car and utilize public transportation to get around the City. We have a wonderful MetroLink train system, subways and express bus service lanes. Most every major attraction to see in LA has a dedicated subway station.

Oh yes, I'm with Paul on the night time driving. That's we always do when heading out on a road trip, or used to when we could afford the gas.
