I just read about Greg Sargent punking the Wingnut Times by reporting how the "Petraeus Report" is legally mandated to be produced by the White House. Since this is an under-reported item, I sent the following letter to some local papers to hopefully get it more widely known.
Very soon, a report will come out that everyone is waiting for. This report will supposedly detail the progress (or lack thereof) being made in Iraq by the US military. Many people on all points of the political spectrum are predicting things about this report. One thing about this report is being downplayed: its source.
This report is billed as the "Petraeus Report". It is not. As the Los Angeles Times has already reported, it is being produced by the White House. What's more, this is right. BY LAW, this report is REQUIRED to be producecd by the White House.
This raises two questions. Why do so many people insist on calling this the "Petraeus Report"? And, knowing it's coming from the White House, do you still look forward to it to honestly inform you of what is happening? A third question comes to mind: does question two go to any length to answer question one?
