Democratic Party Politics Has Always Been Complicated

As our party's convention nears, and the REAL general election cycle is getting ready to kick into gear, it has been much nicer reading the posts from the Clinton hardliners, the Obama hardliners and those of us wishy-washy Democrats who will always vote the party line no matter what.

They are becoming much more civil and understanding. I have to admit, it has been difficult for this old Texas Yellow Dog Democrat to read of party loyalists who won't be voting for our nominee by either voting for John McCain or by just not voting on the presidential part of the ballot at all. Having said that, I honestly believe that very few of you folks will actually be staying at home. Because you all know, as well as I do, that our down-ballot contests are every bit as important as the battle at the top of the ticket.

I have nothing but the utmost respect for all Democrats. Although we may differing ideas about how to correct the problems of our nation, especially the ones created by having to deal with a Grade A, top-of-the-line, total IDIOT in the White House since 2001, we DO have the same goals and overall ideals that we believe in.

I feel comfortable in saying this because Democrats are the most caring, concerned and responsible party in the history of these United States. There will always be somethings that we NEVER agree on, but what doesn't kill us makes us stronger, and we honestly, at least at the grassroots local level, know that the power of the many, as compared to the power of the few and the rich, will be the only cure for what ails us.

And although I have felt like there were many on here during the primaries that were more "independent" than Democratic, I honor all of the true Democrats in whatever decisions they choose to make in November, and to what level of party support they feel their conscience can handle. WE ARE DEMOCRATS! We fight.....we argue.....hell, sometimes we even namecall.....it's what we do. But we have a rich, honorable history being the party of Thomas Jefferson, FDR, Harry Truman, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon Baines Johnson, Bobby Kennedy and yes, Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton. And I would stack ANY one of those great men up against ANYONE that the GOP would care to attempt to match up to. (Aside from Teddy Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln, I can't think of a ONE that even deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as those in our background).

Just do what you feel is right.....the rest of us will not be judging.......and then GET BACK TO US AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!! For as you know, as great as it is, the Democratic Party can't sustain itself without as many great thinkers and do'ers as it can get.

Let's just get this election behind us, and get our kids out of Iraq.....find Osama bin Laden (finally)....and get back to leading the world by example instead of forcing our will on it at the business end of a gun......

Re: WITH all DUE RESPECT !

Never thought you were Blue. And it won't be the first 'split' this party has seen. The last large defection we had wasn't even the "Reagan" Democrats. It was the 'Dixiecrats' with Strom Thurmond and Jesse Helms leading the way.

The party is far from dead. And, with all due respect, I don't think the smart thinking independents will risk screwing up like they did backing the Republicans last time.

There are, without a doubt, many who are leaving the party, and as sad as that is, it is a fact of life, and I wish you nothing but happiness and good health.

But there have been literally millions of NEW voters that have come along, just as they alway have at times of shift.

And I respect your decision. Just have some respect for those of us who choose to follow the lead of Bill and Hillary Clinton, to back the nominee of our party. He was not my first choice. But, for me, he is NOW the ONLY choice.

Ditto, it's the only choice left.

Hey Blue my first vote was back in the very early 60's! I voted democrat by absentee ballot most of the time becasue I spent most of my career in the Army in Europe (15 years).

My wife (after naturalization and the tons of paperwork) and I have voted that till June. We then registered as Independent because we got tired of the DNC and horrible representatives that just took us for granted. The last kick was the unending bias demonstrated by the DNC to get Obama on the POTUS ticket. To hell with all the others and backgrounds meant nothing, nor did WORDS!

The split is there and will take many years to heal because both pro and con democrats have been violated so many times the hate is just spewing out! Yes Hill camp people are mad and the constant slamming by obamians sure helps to unite don't it? We are over it and just feel time will show the true spirit of Obama and family and by then it will be way too late!

The down ticket
By Jacob Clark Jul 7th 2008 at 1:17 am EDT
elections are vitally important. I think many who can't do the GE campaign will work doubly hard on local campaigns. We need them!

Agreed. I hope, in the near future if not 2008, to bring Texas back into the Democratic fold. And even now, people are underestimating the new activity of the African-American and Tejano (Latino) citizens of my Great State. Texas has never been as "heavily" Republican as people think. But it has been enough to tip the scales, especially with Democratic malaise abounding over the past few elections. But I am really hoping that if Obama can bring out the 'minority' vote here...anything is possible. By the way, I put minority in quotes, because in Texas us white, mostly Western European-Americans are still the largest single group in the states race make up, but we are a minority majority now, as the latinos and the African-Americans together are actually a majority minority.

Anybody who doesn't see the possibilities here are either blind, stupid, or just not paying any attention. Especially with Barack's plan of a 50 state strategy that won't just write off Texas to the GOP.

This is true in either case. I hope we can/will keep the intensity going.

Re: if Barack Hussein Obama is your only choice

First...Hussein is also the name of the late King of Jordan....and he was a former warrior who worked for peace. I had heard of him...LONG before I ever cared who Saddam was. It also shows you the lack of rarity of the use of the name within that culture.

And if you look at the heading at the top of THIS PAGE, you will see that it is THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY that I came here to write about, because I AM a Democrat.

All I Can Say Is
By Z Rho Jul 7th 2008 at 7:26 pm EDT
Bless you Cato. I would do the same if Senator Clinton were our nominee.

Thanks, Rhoda.

My heroes, Bill and Hillary Clinton are urging party unity. So us slithering in the grass PURE Democrats that some of these people want to judge, are going to follow the lead of our primary choice for the nomination and the former president, and support the TICKET!

By the way, I voted for Dukakis, and I DEFINITELY had no interest in him as the nominee....but after that was what he became, he was MY choice for president.
