Michigan has questions for Obama

It was awfully kind of Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama to visit Michigan, the state he blew off during the January primary that he recently claimed to have won -- an amazing feat since he removed his name from the ballot.

Rather than expose himself to serious questions about his campaign and platform, however, Obama chose to isolate himself with planned events, including an invitation-only "town hall meeting" at Macomb County Community College.

Such an event, with questions from supporters who are asked to attend, was the equivalent of a stage play with actors reading from a script. It did not allow for any meaningful exploration of what an Obama presidency might mean for auto workers, Macomb County residents, Michigan and the nation.

So we are left to wonder how Obama might have addressed some probing questions such as:

Is it just a coincidence that you appeared in an area with a predominantly white populace on the day after Democratic rival Hillary Clinton claimed a 40-point primary win in West Virginia, a state where she boasted that she had more support from "hard-working white Americans?"

What does it say about the Democratic party that in the West Virginia primary, 8 out of 10 Clinton voters told exit pollsters that race mattered in their decision?

Obama is drawing over 90 percent of the African-American vote in the primaries. If GOP presidential candidate John McCain were to attract over 90 percent of the white vote in November, would you consider those results to reflect racism?

Obama said in Michigan that he would meet with American automakers to hear their concerns during the first month of an Obama presidency. Why did Obama not seek their council before making previous remarks about their business?

Obama has made numerous harsh statements about our American automakers, criticizing their products and sales strategy while proclaiming that this is something they "need to hear." What, in Obama's background as a lawyer, community organizer and politician, qualifies him as an expert to tell any American industrialist how to run a corporation?

Obama continually tells us that only the wealthy benefited from the tax cuts engineered by President George W. Bush, yet the latest IRS figures show that their tax burden has increased and that the wealthiest 1 percent of Americans are paying 40 percent of the current tax load. How much more of the federal tax burden should be borne by the country's most successful people?

Obama supports government involvement in health care, entitlements for illegal immigrants, government-paid college education, education for "infants," poverty programs for the rest of the world, a mandatory "living wage" for private industry, flexible working hours for federal employees and government-mandated time off for workers to attend kid's plays, among other intrusive programs. Is it possible for government to ever become too big?

Obama has conceded that ethanol fuel requirements should be reconsidered because they have caused higher food prices. Will he now consider the same possibility as it relates to energy prices if we force the nation to use more, inefficient "green" power technologies?

Obama says he wants to end our dependence on foreign oil. Does this mean he will finally support domestic oil exploration and the construction -- for the first time in more than 30 years -- of new oil refineries and nuclear power plants?

How is Obama's vision of America different from socialism, which was practiced so often with failure in the 20th century?

Obama says he wants to get out of Iraq, in part, to move our Arabic translators into Afghanistan. Is he aware that the languages spoken in Afghanistan include Farsi, Pashto, Uzbek, Turkmen and Brahui, but not Arabic?

While in Michigan, Obama gladly accepted the endorsement of former rival John Edwards. Does it trouble him that a subprime mortgage company with which Edwards was involved foreclosed almost three dozen homes after Hurricane Katrina?

Obama claims he stands for change. Is it possible that change is not commensurate with improvement?

Why did Obama not want to face questions like these in Michigan if he is a candidate who can unify all of us?

Next time Obama comes backs, perhaps we can tell him some things he needs to know.

So, you somehow learned
By Mike in Raleigh May 16th 2008 at 9:40 pm EDT
how to copy and paste. Your contribution to this Democratic Party Building website was what, exactly?

Or perhaps you thought you were posting on one of your neocon webblogs and just hit the wrong key. Either way, your neocon post does not belong here. Plenty of other places for your hate other than the DNC Party Builder blogs.
And by the way, "Democrat" in Livonia, MI

With just a little effort you can also learn how to post clean copies of write-ups that you want to echo without all those weird characters. But hey, that might take some creativity and thought.

That is how i knew it was real! Thanks, I am greatful for you to post the article. When Bush did his thing here in Arizona he did the same thing, a kind of choregraphed event. Fake. Obama did one in ND, it was funny too. He never said he would do something or a solution, he just asked the people questions. He was not accountable than.

Sandi you are right on.....
Obama does not have the answers any more than GW Bush did....
So they get it set up where they are not asked questions.....
Just say what they want to say....
Yup...

His war chest is sponsoring the media.

Attack the blogger who has unfavorable things to say about Obama.... you guys are the same old broken record.

This is a good post.

Yes you could have cleaned it up, but the perspective is valid, and needs to be considered.

Thank you for posting it.
What a snot, Mike.

Could you be any more negative?

Mike, what is wrong with asking pertinent questions?
Re: So, you somehow learned
By Vidya May 18th 2008 at 2:10 pm EDT
I think it's going to be new the law...

NO one is allowed to say unfavorable things about Obama or ask questions he doesn't want to answer... "sweetie"...lol.

???
By Democrat in Livonia, MI May 16th 2008 at 9:47 pm EDT
my hate? are you really so droll? these are valid questions that need to be answered. i, for one, am tired of the media's liplock with Obama's rear end, Obama's refusal to answer the tough questions and his 'sudden' interest in my home state. this is Clinton country. so, get over it, buddy.

What? You mean the media is biased against Hillary?

I had not noticed...!

lol

Thank you

Do you wonder how many people would vote for Obama now that they know about him? I certainly changed my mine. I want a president that loves america. Now that the DNC good old boys have pushed Hillary out I will vote for McCain instead of a democrat. I've never done that before.
Re: James
By Democrat in Livonia, MI May 16th 2008 at 10:05 pm EDT
I have heard that a lot. I also think that Hillary supporters are outraged at the way the media has liplocked with Obama's hind quarters. The national media plays out a story very differently from what is locally happening, which is the reason I posted this story from the Detroit News. The national coverage I read implied that Michigan welcomed Obama with open arms and the blue collar workers are ready to support him. That is not going to happen.

LOL that is true, the money poured into the media from his campaign has certainly earned him their lips..lol

Re: Michigan
By Paul Thompson May 16th 2008 at 10:08 pm EDT
The Detroit News is a Republican rag that only survives because antitrust laws were tweaked to keep uncompetitive newspapers alive. The News likes to tout the benefits of competition, while reaping the benefits of the opposite.

Frank Beckman is a sports broadcaster in the local area. Hardly a great political thinker. He's a homer -- someone who says whatever his bosses want to hear so their ratings go up.

Livonia is one of the most segregated communities in Michigan. The city has a reputation for fighting against businesses that might draw a "different" crowd into its borders.

You have no credibility, Livonia. Nor does your hometown.
Re: Michigan
By Democrat in Livonia, MI May 16th 2008 at 10:25 pm EDT
i expect that kind of response from someone who knows those questions aren't going to get answered. credible? i live in Livonia. you live where? i think i am in a better position to determine the economic and political climate.
Re: Michigan
By Paul Thompson May 16th 2008 at 11:13 pm EDT
You're a conservative hack living in a conservative city citing a conservative rag. The Detroit News doesn't even have good funnies.

Really. No credibility.
Green Party
By Democrat in Livonia, MI May 16th 2008 at 10:30 pm EDT
Paul, you forgot to mention your affiliation with the Green Party. I'm sure you know Douglas, your previous Governor nominee... but I wonder if you know that Douglas trolls on alternate websites to meet women? I believe he recently moved out of state.
Re: Green Party
By Paul Thompson May 16th 2008 at 11:11 pm EDT
Are there better women out-of-state?
Re: Green Party
By Vidya May 18th 2008 at 2:19 pm EDT
Well just cause he may be a dweeb doesn't make him half bad, right Paul? It's fine with me if he goes out of state to troll for chickies, maybe he could do a mail order bride thing... at least he is green.

Still, attacking the blogger, Paul, this is getting old.

These are legitimate issues, not repo issues. Since the Obama campaign is sponsoring the media now with it's war chest, it seems no one else is asking the hard question, the rest of the media are soft.

nice trolling
By Moses May 16th 2008 at 10:14 pm EDT
If you are going to cut and paste something, don't you think it should be something that doesn't come from a conservative talk radio host?
Re: nice trolling
By Democrat in Livonia, MI May 16th 2008 at 10:22 pm EDT
the questions are relevant and real. i don't care if he is a talk show host, a factory worker, a college professor or a stay at home mom. the questions are what are important, not the writer.
Re: nice trolling
By Moses May 16th 2008 at 10:29 pm EDT
Using GOP talking points doesn't cut it. Now if you want to discuss legitimate Dem talking points that tries to examine minor differences between Clinton and Obama, you might get further with your fishing expedition.
Re: nice trolling
By Democrat in Livonia, MI May 16th 2008 at 10:32 pm EDT
i'm sorry. you don't get to choose who asks the questions i am interested in hearing the answers to.
Re: nice trolling
By Moses May 16th 2008 at 10:43 pm EDT
Then why aren't you asking them of Clinton and McCain? They won't answer those questions either. It's a straw man you're putting up there.
Here is a cut past for ya.
By Vidya May 18th 2008 at 2:21 pm EDT
These are legitimate issues, not repo issues. Since the Obama campaign is sponsoring the media now with it's war chest, it seems no one else is asking the hard question, the rest of the media are soft.

FYI

The questions directly pertain to Obama..

So ask away while he's in MI
By Jan CO May 16th 2008 at 11:31 pm EDT
He's there, you have your chance. Or are you just like Cheryl in MI who does nothing but moan and whine about MI being screwed over AGAIN by their own DEMOCRATIC SENATOR on a blog where no one will see your moaning except the regular bloggers.

Where were you before this all started? Oh, that's right, you were waiting for Rush to say GO

I certainly hope....no.....The family I have in Livonia, are all intelligent, glad you aren't one of mine.

Since you have no manners, I'll help you out....

IT IS CONSIDERED SPAM WHEN YOU POST THE SAME THING REPEATEDLY, EVEN IF YOU CHANGE THE WORDS.

IT IS CONSIDERED VERY RUDE WHEN YOU DON'T USE THE EXTENDED POST BY NOT DOING SO YOU DON'T GIVE YOUR FELLOW PUNDITS A CHANCE TO BE SEEN ON THE MAIN BOARD, YOU PUSH EACH OTHER DOWN DOWN DOWN
Re: So ask away while he's in MI
By Vidya May 18th 2008 at 2:33 pm EDT
Again attack the blogger who has something unfavorable to say about Obama...

attack attack attack...it just gets old...and tiresome..

These are real issues, real questions and they are worth considering.

Don't worry about jan, she's Troll #3!
Re: Perfect example
By Vidya May 18th 2008 at 3:17 pm EDT
I don't think she is a repo...she did have a nice post in honor of Annieb... however, the same old tactics of attacking those who question the integrity of Obama is getting really old.
