Hillary Clinton with 51%, to Barack Obama's 49%.

I don't think the gas tax thing helped Clinton. People jumped off on Obama's talking points, on the gas tax being a gimmick. People DO say she has no chance of changing the way the gas profits get distributed, and that she is pandering. But, how do they expect Obama to do anything either? In Texas, we all get a tax-free weekend on certain retail items for "back to school." I've never heard anyone complain about that, or complain that the prices where being hiked up in accordance.

What Clinton wanted to do was to give us some relief, to show us on what side our leaders are with their votes, an acknowledgement of the problem, if you will. She would then make the oil companies pay for this tax break--and, how can some of us, Democrats, think that she would be stupid enough to let them raise the prices on us in other ways. Come on people.

Clinton was hurt by her stance on the SHORT TERM gas tax holiday because no one believed in real change.

No change will occur unless we change our own attitudes on what we can be accomplished, no matter who leads us.

A win is a win, and so we keep going.

Gas tax did not help Hillary. She got creamed in the vote under 65 years old, but she did great in the vote over 65 years old. Buddy, people over 65 do not have a concern with driving! Do agree with a Dem in '08 though!!!

Ok, I can't help it, I just have to say this...most people over 65 aren't concerned about driving but all of us UNDER 65 are concerned with their driving

LOL Jess, thank you I do try...actually it's more like going on two days and a couple hours now of no sleep, too much pain and can't focus.

With that said haven't you seen the adamant one's posting that will not vote Democrat if their candidate is not our nominee, pc is one them. I pledged a long time ago to support whomever our nominee is no matter who that is and no matter how angry I may get at the other one.

And, Yes, you do get wiser with age and experience if you remember to learn from those experiences :)

As someone who now chauffeurs around my father-in-law and an elderly friend (both in their 80s) because it has become too dangerous for them to drive, I am drinking lots of carrot juice lately and hoping I am still capable of driving in 20 years.

Hillary had a short term solution to provide immediate relief. It was spinned so much and yet, she stood by her statement because it was the right thing to do.

Thank you for your post.

Hillary, the only candidate that can speak with out teleprompters.

Okay

Here I will have disagree on one point.

A gas tax sounds like a great idea, but not really for me.

I am a Civil Engineer and work for the Iowa DOT. This would be taking money from the funding that is needed for roads, bridges, etc. etc. And causing layoffs and less man hours for our sizable amount of employees here at the Iowa DOT.

This is only a personal opinon, I am no economist, but it is a matter that effects me personally

I understand your point completely. And, I can't see that happening considering the need for those jobs, and the resources needed to build up our infrastructures. Hillary advocates for money and jobs to rebuild our infrastructure, and she has said, and I know she's a politician, but she has said that those jobs would not be lost, and in fact new ones would be created.

Yes, those were my concerns with that too. Wasn't it like 300,000 jobs that would have been affected?

Back To School tax holiday
By 57 year old independent white male May 7th 2008 at 1:43 am EDT
The back to schools tax holiday stimulates sales for the retailers. They sell more at the same profit margin.

The oil companies would gain in the same way. They may make mllions more on the increased sales.

The average family would save $24 over the summer.

Good idea? idon't think so.

Again, it's not so muh about the numbers, as it is about finally taking a stance, a LASTING stance for immediate relief.

The gas tax is $0.18 cents to the gallon, or something like that. I have an 18 gallon tank. I fill up 5 times a month. Saves me about $16 a month. So from June to August $48, I can go to the movies about 6 times--I'll take that.

But once again, it's about acknowledging the problem with a vote that says we hear your hurting, and we need to start moving, to get things changing in the right direction for the long term.
