Americans say the founding fathers would likely be disappointed with the state of the country.
(CNN) — As Americans celebrate the anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, an overwhelming majority say the 56 signers of that document would be displeased at how the country has turned out.
According to a new CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll, close to 70 percent say that if the signers of the Declaration of Independence could see America today they would be disappointed, while just under 30 percent say the founding founders would be happy with the country 232 years later.
Americans didn't always feel that way — in 2001, 54 percent thought that the signers would be pleased with the state of the country today; now that figure is down to just 29 percent.
But the poll shows a majority of Americans are still proud of their country — 61 percent say they are extremely proud to be an American, and another 28 percent say they are very proud. Those figures are virtually unchanged from 2005, although they are down a bit from 2002 and 2003.
Should a presidential candidate always wear a flag pin on his lapel? Forty-one percent say yes, and another 13 percent say a candidate should frequently wear one. Only about one in ten say a candidate should never wear a flag pin on his lapel.

But following the law, respecting the CONSTITUTION i a must.
Our current group of politicians (yes Obama is a politician no change here)twists and distorts the constitution to suit their perssonal needs and need to pander.
Such is the case with faith based initiatives.
The Establishment Clause was placed in the Constitution INTENTIONALLY.
Religious organizations had a tax exempt status to remain OUT Of the political sphere. Once they are competing and accepting tax money they are no longer independent. For one, they merit not a tax exemption. for another it goes against the grain of the Constitution. And the pandering and weedling with language Obama and others do does not change that one bit.
We had a FISA law that simply required some probable cause be shown to a judge a party independent of the other branches. They even were allowed to show it after the fact, but this was not enough and our politicians ALL OF THEM have sacrificed reason and judgment.
They do bring us shame every day with increased pandering, sacrificing of real values (values are not your religion, but your respect for law, for our independence, and our individual rights to live with traditions and manners we believe in as long as we do not hurt or infringe upon the rights of others). Morality and values have become jaded and a game of a religious sect and our nominees catering to that irrespective of the tenents upon which this nation was founded and the reason so many of us are here today (the reason so many immigrants arrived on these shores) is indded shameful
