Hiserenity asked a question that I don't believe was fully answered
She wanted to know why when Misogyny is called out and confronted, no one attacks the use of the word when confronting Sexism. But when the term Racism is used , in confronting racial bigotry , there's always an attack on the person confronting it with accusations of playing the Race Card.
So, she asked the question. What term can be used when discussing or calling out Racism other than Racism , when addressing Racism ? There really is no other term to use and I think the question was more rhetorical than actually seeking to use a different word and I think the intention was to discuss this discrepancy.
The reason why Misogyny can be used is because , even in this day and age , it is socially acceptable to be an open Misogynists , while it is no longer socially acceptable , by the masses , to be a Racist. In America, Racism is WRONG. It took a long time for that to sink in . But it's pretty much established as wrong and no one likes to be called wrong .
(There's More)
On the other hand, being a Sexist and a Misogynist is only wrong to Women. Oh, sure, you'll get a handful of men who will talk about how they have a wife and daughters and that's why they speak up against Sexism. But it is mainly a fight that is waged by the victim. While Racism is a something that the majority of people openly fight against together (Whites , Blacks , Latinos , Asians , ect. join together in marches and protests and calls to action) Women , fight Sexism mainly, ALONE.
I have yet to see a band of men (strait men) coming together in massive amounts , taking on Sexism. I've never seen it. There are no groups ran by men (strait men) who are dedicated to the eradication of Misogyny. No HD Bike Rides through the streets calling on men (strait men) to stop treating women like pieces of trash. As a matter of fact, it's so noticeably absent that this whole paragraph is making someone laugh right now.
You will notice that I keep saying (strait men) . I say that because something else I notice. And that is this. The majority of men who join women in fighting Sexism , are Gay men. Not strait men. The problem with Misoginy and Sexism is not coming from Gay men. So, we can't sit up here and say, "Hey, there are a lot of men fighting Sexism" because Gay men cannot be counted among the perpetrators. It's not Gay men who are causing the problem.
The problem , and again, this is why we don't see the same backlash when we talk about Misogyny and Sexism as we do when we call out Racism , is that it's only a problem to the victims. I have seen Misogyny and Sexism explained away as "art" and "entertainment". Let's explore that for a second. If a White person re-enacted beatings or other scenes from Slavery praising the Confederacy or re-enacted the furnace scenes from the Holocaust praising Hitler and placed it in a music video and said "Deal with it", you betcha his ass would be "dealt with". Lawsuits , banning , fines , protests, calls to action, death threats , the whole bit.
But , we see , all the time , images that suggests it's normal for women to get raped , stay in the home, get slapped by a man and still stay with him , play the subservient role on T.V. , be called a bitch , be dumb and ignorant all the time , be weak , can never handle pressure, if she's angry, there's always a reference to her menstrual cycle , she's never wearing any clothes , she's a slut. But, if she's a portrayed as a strong woman, she's sexualized.
Here's the best and most hilarious example , because we see this one all the time. Whenever there's a woman introduced in a scene as the one in charge, what happens ? Cue the dumb music with the saxophone , zoom in on the legs and work your way up to what society calls the face of a beautiful woman flipping her hair. It happens all the time , every time and we all know it. The message being sent is that men will only allow women to be in Charge as long as they get to have sex at some point.
And yet , this is so accepted , that it's either funny or completely ignored. And women aren't helping because all we do is shake our heads and think to ourselves 'Whatever". That attitude sends the message that we don't care we are portrayed this way and that's why it won't stop. We see it in commercials, movies, music videos and in the Media. I wonder what men (strait men) would think , if the tables were turned? When they turn on the News , they always see a buff news anchor sitting on a stool with on leg propped up so we can all see how "blessed" he is down stairs replacing the women who don't know how to button their blouses.
What if we sexualized men and stereotyped them as being dumb and only good for Sex and fixing things ? Ladies , let's be honest. We tried that tactic and it backfired because , believe it or not, men actually like that and it doesn't bother them the way it bothers us. So, what do we do? Should our female CEO's noticeably only hire women in top positions and keep the men in the Mail (Male) Room or in Maintenance with less pay? I bet you that would piss them off real good. But we can't do that because well, it's Sexist.
So , what do we do? How about we teach our young boys to respect women and not let their fathers get away with "unconsciously" instilling an attitude that girls are less than boys at an early age ? Let your daughter take out the trash or rake leaves while your son does the dishes or folds laundry. Don't let your husband slap you on the butt in front of the kids. In other words, whatever the stereotypes are , don't encourage them in your own children. Then when they get older, they will reject what society is telling them.
I don't know. just a thought. I've rambled on long enough and went all over the place with this subject. Consider this my contribution to the Womens Forum. And one last note to the men (strait men). I know there are many of you who are stand up guys and I am glad for it. But , unfortunately, you are outnumbered by a bunch of jerks with power and it's those jerks of whom I speak in this post. And for the Gay men who may have felt uncomfortable being brought into all this;
I just wanted to point out that the majority of men I see coming to the defense of Womens Rights have been Gay men and you are not the perps. So, if strait men want to say "I see lots of men who are standing up" they are talking about you. Not them and quite frankly, it's the strait men who need to be addressing and changing their behavior towards women. Not you and until we see masses of strait men coming to the defense of women, things wont change.I hope that makes sense and I hope you understand why I brought you into the conversation.

Well. My post is about Misogyny. I would like you to read it.
;p
:)
I hate Walmart too. They have a history of gender discrimination in the workplace.
I think its harder to come to a consensus on racism because we don't all experience it the same way.
However, regardless of ethnicity, there are some things that we have in common as women. That may make it easier for us to come together and speak out against sexism/misogyny.
Unfortunately, this isn't always the case. I know when I posted a thread ( Link ) on what I felt was a lack of support from feminist on behalf of women of color I was attacked as making a race issue when there was none. But IMHO, for women of color this issues are sometimes inextricably connected.
That's another important topic for another time. It's more complicated. But it does need to be addressed. Trust me. I know.
:)
Shew - someone fart in here? Women always get sheot on. Have I got a story to tell you!
I think your post is dead-on. I sit in on many student conferences and disciplinary hearings for my high school. It is frightening how some teenage boys treat their mothers. It pisses me off and makes me cringe. I usually make a comment to try and diffuse the situation.
