One thing I REALLY don't want to happen. I don't want this primary to end with Bill Clinton looking like some buffoon. The truth is that we ALL look foolish when we are defending the people we love and Bill is no different in that attribute. The following post is longer than I intended when I began. If you don't like to read, go to the extended post. There are some you tubes of Bill playing the sax.
Bill Clinton may very well be the brightest American President in our history. I am not sure but I think he has the highest IQ of any president ever. People close to him report that he is always curious about new innovations and new ways to do things.
The BEST example of this pioneering spirt in my opinion was when he was Governor of Arkansas and both he and Hillary had a friend who had known and worked with Muhammad Yunus. Some of you may know of Yunus. (He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006.) He is known as "the banker to the poor". His vision is a poverty-free world. Yunus is an economist who founded Grameen, a bank devoted to providing the poorest of Bangladesh with miniscule loans. He would make small loans such as $25 to street beggars to buy candy to sell instead of begging. He would loan $100 to women to purchase sewing machines. His micro-credit programs have grown Grameen Bank into a mulit billion dollar financial institution, thus proving that even the poorest of poor are trustworthy of credit--a lesson that Chase Manhattan might learn. :) I've forgotten what their default on loans is, but is is MUCH LOWER than any traditional bank.
Most people don't understand poverty. It is not created by the poor. it is created by the structutres of society and the policies pursued by society. (don't get me started :))
Anyway to end what is beginning to be a long story, the Clintons invited Yunus to come to Arkansas when Bill was governor, one of the poorest states in the union to work his magic there. He implemented what came to be known as the "Good Faith Fund". It was successful and at one point when Clinton ran for president he announced that he intended to start a nationwide network of Micro-credit programs modeled on the Good Faith Fund--which was a great idea in my books. Of course it was poo pooed. America doesn't take kindly to a third world offering technology or ideas that are superior to ours.
Hillary and Chelsea visited Rishipara, Bangladesh in 1995 and met with some women who were Grameen borrowers. :) There is a photo in one of the books I have of Hillary during this visit who is all dressed in the traditional garb of muslim woman with the head scarf and fully covered from head to toe in the traditional cloak.
When the photo of Obama came out in Muslim garb, I was tempted to scan this photo in and post it LOL. But I didn't. For so many reasons, obvious I hope. I didn't want to belittle their work on poverty.
Any way, google Yunus and Good Faith Fund and Grameen Bank if you want to learn more. Now here is the fun part: Bill on the Sax.
