Do you believe it!  Our nation has seen no less than 85 political parties come and go.  (The Republicans might want to take heed this season.) I just went to WIKI and there is great index with links to each of them.

Here are the names of just a few:

Anti-Masonic Party --upstate NY 1828 opposed to freemasonry but they introduced important innovations such as nominating conventions and the adoption of party platforms.

Facing Reality Party--1962-1970 a radical left party in the Marxist traditions.

States' Rights Democratic Party (a.k.a Dixiecrat Party) segregationist, populist splinter party of the Democratic Party.  Strom Thrumond was their president.  They were formed in 1948 as reaction against Truman's orders to integrate the Armed services. (Gradually all the Dixiecrats were absorbed into the Republican party by 1994).  The only Democrat to carry the South after 1956 has been Jimmy Carter.  I think that Obama will get us Georgia, Mississippi, LA, South Carolina and North Carolina.  [I had heard of this bunch, but the the first two parties I mentioned and many of the ones listed at this site.]

Here is the link.  Have fun: Pick a few of your favorites and tell us about them.

"To destroy this invisible Government, to dissolve the unholy alliance between corrupt business and corrupt politics is the first task of the statesmanship of the day."

There's a concept! It never ceases...

Gracie Allen ran for president as the Surprise Party candidate. Wikipedia didn't mention that one.

Comedian Pat Paulsen ran for President in 1968 as a member of the Straight Talking American Government Party, or STAG Party for short.
