Barack Obama: Advocate for People with Disabilities

Consider these facts:

54 million Americans experience some form of disability; working age persons who live with disabilities are almost 3 times as likely to live below the poverty line than those with no disabilities; each state is responsible for it's own Disabilities Department or Department of Employment Rehabilitation--a few states, such as California, have progressive programs for people with disabilities; many states have substandard or no programs at all.

Individual states have failed their disabled communities. Isn't it time the Federal Government stepped in to make the lives of the disabled as full and rewarding as they can be in California?

Barack Obama has a detailed 9-page plan to resolve these problems. In this post I will give you a very brief overview of the plan and a link where you can read it for yourself.

"We must build a world free of unnecessary barriers, stereotypes and discrimination. Policies must be developed, attitudes must be shaped and buildings and organizations must be designed to ensure that everyone has a chance to get the education they need and live independently as full citizens in their communities."

These stirring words, spoken by Barack Obama were long ago backed by his real commitment to change the way America treats members of the disabled community.

The first thing he did in this campaign, is set up a Disability Policy Committee, which is "a diverse group of people with disabilities, parents and other relatives of people with disabilities, scholars, lawyers who represent people with disabilities, experts in technology and a variety of other fields related to disability."

A 4-part plan was developed. In a nutshell, these 4 parts address:

1. Expanding educational opportunities for the disabled.

2. Ending discrimination against the disabled.

3. Increasing the employment rate of the disabled.

4. Support for independent, community-based living for the disabled.

Additionally, Obama created an entire separate issue paper on Autism.

Disabled democrats would do well to support Obama's cause, which will improve the lives of ALL Americans living with disabilities.

The ADA, enacted over 15 years ago has never been fully implemented by congress. Barack Obama will advocate full implementation as POTUS.

I live with a disability. The programs in the state of Washington, where I now live are quite inferior to the programs offered in California, but much better than the programs in southern states with a 40-year tradition of Republican governors.

(There is a GLITCH with my Safari program. I will post the link to the full plan as my first comment on this post.)

Go to where you want people to read, then up at the top where the address bar is, left click it (turns a different color) then right click and chose copy, then paste it in your post.

Maybe you should look at what IL offers Jake. Not only that, but take a look at what the director of DHS in IL paid her driver over $80k a year and Obama's best bud, Emil Jones, is keeping this under wraps. Also, take a look at what he did during his term as IL legislator for the disabled people. Then come back and tell me, a resident of IL, what this man did and why I can even go there. Oh, also, you might want to look up on the disability people's site when there was a meeting of the then candidates and who was rated what. You will find, he screwed up big time.

Well, I thought you would respond, but you see, Sen. Obama didn't see fit to attend. Here was a break down and yes, even McCain attended: Link

Dated Nov. 2, 2007. It doesn't mention Obama. it was great to read Clinton and Biden on disability issues though. Sigh. Listen, Obama was otherwise engaged, I am sure, doing some good work.

I will google the date and see what he was up to that day.

In the meantime, your alternative is McCain. Do you want McCain to be the next POTUS?

Yes, they were but South Carolina was more important at the time. But, he has a plan now, and guess who's plan it mirrors?
Re: I read your link

And if it mirrors HRC's plan, so much the better! HRC is behind BO all the way now!
Re: I read your link

"But he has a plan now" I looked it up, his plan was devised in early 2007 and published on his site at that time. So BHO has had a plan just as long as HRC. Your comment inferred that his plan is new.

Oh, and Jake, maybe you should ask someone like Spirited Dona what Senator Obama's health care will do for someone like her with her disablity. Maybe she can give you more of an insight on those issues.
Re: .

SPIRITED DONA has not told me what her disability is, and i would never "out" a disability. It is for her to tell me, not you.

Jake, she has a head injury and has made it clear to many people on this site. That is why she types in caps most of the time. She talks about these issues a whole lot.
If SPIRITED DONA

comes here I will be more than happy to discuss with her. She is a friend of mine, Mel.

Yes I just confirmed it with him, he was referring to me as dear one, although he thinks you're a dear one too! He's trying to sleep now. Lost all his hair from the chemo.

Thanks Gretchen. Hey if you get over to www.barackobama.com, check out my event listing for August 16--Joey and i are going to host a pre-convention House Party/Fundraiser! We're really excited about it. We learned what not to do with our first House Party for Hillary, now we know--ask for donations up front, then open up your home and food etc to guests. We were too shy about asking for donations the first time out.
