Barack Obama: Champion of LGBT issues

It's time for the LGBT community to unite behind Obama. He is out there for us, he did an exemplary job of advocating for us during Pride Month. Well, Pride Month may be over but Pride marches on! As Obama has stated:

"It's time to live up to our founding promise of equality by treating all our citizens with dignity and respect. Let's enact federal civil rights legislation to outlaw hate crimes and protect workers against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity or expression. Let's repeal Don't Ask, Don't Tell and demonstrate that the most effective and professional military in the world is open to all Americans who are ready and willing to serve our country. Let's treat the relationships and the families of LGBT Americans with full equality under the law."

But actions speak louder than words, and his commitment to our community goes beyond the rhetorical.

He has promoted prominent LGBT activists to top positions in his campaign, and he has been unafraid to advocate for LGBT equality to the African American community at large. African American LGBT's have faced bitter opposition in their racial community, and Barack Obama is leading the way in reversing that tradition.

Senator Obama is solidly behind the LGBT community. Now the LGBT community can be solidly behind Barack Obama. Change will happen with his election. Better days are ahead for LGBT marriage and family issues.

As an out gay man I say, thank you Barack!

And I am going to back up my thanks with work in Seattle to invite my LGBT brothers and sisters to make history with you!

I have decided to hold an open house, lawn party fundraiser in August, and will return to my favorite gay bar, where I hosted a series of Hillary Happy Hours, to host a series of similar events for you.

When I began to support Barack Obama, I thought, "well I'll vote for him, but I will not work as hard as I did for Hillary." But the excitement is contagious. I want to be a part of it. I have a profile at the Barack Obama official website, and I invite you to see my profile and contribute on my fundraising page. Let's show the good Senator that our intentions are backed by more than just blogging for change.

He doesn't get my vote....
By Democrat in Springfield, OR Jul 5th 2008 at 4:52 am EDT
In the begining I wasn't sure who I would vote for.....The more I heard about each of the canidates, I knew I'd vote for Hillary. However today, if Hillary isn't the nominee after Denver I'll vote for McCain... Obama has a weak resume and his choices of associates are more than controversial....

You are no Democrat if you are going to vote for McCain.

That is not a fair assumption and it's a bit judgmental.

Many lifelong Democrats are going to either vote for McCain or not vote at all. Some democracy within the Democratic Party.

Edison, why do you call me dirty? Are you really for Clinton? If so, then you will do as Bill Clinton has said:

"Fall in love with your candidate in the Primary. Fall in line with your party in the General Election."

He's very progressive on disability issues and support for the disabled communities.

you obviously were not paying very close attention to the other Dem campaign, if you are saying that obama's was the dirtiest in history! There were plenty of innuendos and smears and distortions on the other side, too, so I think we call that all a draw!
You are obviously a one-issue voter. Good for you. You just close your eyes to the Supreme Court lifetimes positions which if they turn totally right this next time, will affect every single aspect of your's and your kid's lives! You close your eyes to Katrina and Republicans ignoring victims, because of their color. (You think if those were blond, blue eyed people sitting on the roofs, that efforts would not have been made?) You forget about Terri Schiavo, stem cell research, Gasoline prices, the economy, the debt and deficit to come due i your grandkids lifeteimes. You forget that SS and Medicare are on the chopping block!
If you approved and liked George Bush, you are gonna LOVE John McCain, so you go ahead and sell every single principle you may have left in your body, and vote for McCain! Bully for you!!!!! Don't EVER let me hear you crying about what you get for the next 8 years!!

YOU HIT THE NAIL DIRECTLY ON THE HEAD!

When all you have to offer is inexperience and riding on the coattails of others, then all you have to contribute are smears to disqualify others. And no better way to spread the smears than not to say a thing and let others do your dirty work for you.

Facts are facts. Lies are lies.

I think you are the first gay person to openly say they will be campaigning for Obama in partybuilders. (And a Clinton supporter at that.) I know we have many out there but no one has blogged it in here. Thank you Jacob.

I know you were and still are a strong supporter of Clinton. I know, too, that her decision to suspend her campaign was a difficult choice, and that your decision to support Obama was just as difficult. She was and is a force in politics, and without the vast majority of her supporters, Obama cannot win. He is lucky to have you now on his side.

Edison, give it a rest. You have never once responded to the content of the post. This is about the LGBT community and winning back the White House in November.

"...understands that there has been and continues to be great division in the GLTB community over supporting Senator Obamas nomination."

Jackie, this continues throughout the Democratic Party community as well.

Their eyes are opening.

Good point Jack. Hillary was exceptionally on our side, with actions starting as First Lady through the campaign, and some eloquent statements on LGBT equality. Hillary doesn't believe in gay marriage either. She is all for civil unions. She thinks marriage is an issue for the individual states to decide, not the federal govt.
