China Unfit to Host 2008 Olympics

This summer, President George W. Bush will smile while jaunting up the stairs to Air Force One - his laughable presidency all but over - with not a care in the world.

For 13 hours, he'll lie on a couch in the airplane, drink pomegranate-flavored water and watch reruns of Texas Rangers games from the glory days of Nolan Ryan and Jose Canseco

Eventually, he'll land in Beijing, China, for the 2008 Summer Olympics. He'll pose and smile for photos with great Chinese leaders.

You'll definitely read about it in the newspaper, and so will people just like you all over the world; and you'll probably feel pretty good when you do. Like a bottle of cheap gin the whole globe can pass around, the Olympics somehow make it okay to forget for a little while.

This is helpful for most of us, but somewhat unfortunate for the Tibetan people, whose struggle against occupation has gone on for nearly 60 years

In 1951, the Chinese government annexed Tibet and declared it part of China. In 1959, an uprising resulted in the expulsion of the Dalai Lama; since that time he has run a "government in exile" based in India and become a martyr for global political rights.

On March 10, in honor of the 49th anniversary of China's great experiment in the abuse of state sovereignty, Tibetan monks began to protest en masse the continued demonization of the Dalai Lama and China's efforts to ethnically cleanse Tibetans.

China, for its part, pledged to "resolutely crush" those people. Within days, it launched a fresh military campaign in the region. It kicked out journalists and declared no quarter on religious figures.

Anyway, a generation later, as a reward for Chinese progress and a concession that China has established itself as a modern global player, it gets to host the Olympics!

Irony in such high doses should be fatal.

Guilt by association.

It's reported that 116,000 people are dead in Myanmar. These folks were alive 7 days ago. Some reports state the number could go as high as 500,000.

Both the U.S. and the U.K. are complicit in supporting the govt there with taking natural gas profits. We collectively watched as the Monks were beaten into submission.

The money we supply this Junta keeps the military in power. Are we, should we be unfit to host the Olympics?

I hope the next President is a democrat and they go as far as ending all relations with Myanmar aka Burma because I don't know why the US government didn't just shut there embassy down when they didn't recognise the name change and junta government back in 1990. Almost 20 years later we still have a embassy.

...and it COULD be! Perhaps GWB and the other GOP's think that what China is doing is okay. And maybe if it suited thier purpose and they thought they could get away with it they would do the same thing. Another reason an informed decision in this election is so important!

Tibet and Earthquakes
By Michael Clark May 21st 2008 at 4:37 pm EDT
The Chinese are doing everything in their power to help the people of Sichuan Province after the recent earthquake. That's Sichuan province -Ethnic Han. If Lhasa was destroyed instead of Chengdu, would they be helping as much? Or would we now be seeing a token effort like the Burmese junta to show the world their kindness while ignoring the people of Tibet?

If you think of that...

China has its dark past such in the like of Centuries before the good 'ole USA. Consider our history alongside China's. Side by side on a time line we're the midget's walking stick. Yet in such a short time our history is chalk full of coup d'etat and war that if occupation were a mark against progression we'd be in the negative. Our own campaigns of expansion have lead Native Americans into discrimination that continues even today through people like John Cornyn (R)Texas who allows a lotto and takes away gambling from a people who contributed to his Senator title. In that light we should never host an Olympic game ourselves. I believe that China's claim to land is as equivalent to ours in the once Spanish territory. Neutrality in the issue of foreign affairs and should be the main prerogative of foreign policy. Protest takes sides, and in such an issue their battles should be there own. To often has the US stepped in and the situation gets worse. I hope in my heart of hearts that it will be a peaceful resolution.
