The campaign slogan "You are the change you have been waiting for" has begun to have a hollow ring to my ears. Of the many pieces of campaign mail from Obama for America I get daily, one stands out. To paraphrase it said Rachel we need your experience, wisdom...etc. Thinking that the campaign might actually want to hear from citizens in addition to the chosen "Chicago boys" pundits, I opened the envelope and as usual all the campaign wanted was my money.
I will say what I think anyway. I am most moved by the young people whose sense of what is possible for them has been awakened by Barak Obama. "Nudge" economics will not free the young of the unregulated industry of predatory credit, or the Three Trillion Dollar War which both Democrats and Republicans have perpetuated.
I am a progressive, Liberal Democrat. The last time I looked at the Constitution, (Tuesday), Impeachment was still there. Members of Congress pledged to uphold and defend the Constitution, not the Party.
I like Senator Obama a great deal. I voted for him in the primary and I want to help elect him. His recent votes have disturbed me As a Jew, the human rights of Palestinians trapped in the Gaza Ghetto are as dear to me as are the human rights of Israelis and "Gitmo" detainees and my own. I think I have met two or three Jews in my adult life who are supporters of AIPAC. I have enormous respect for President Carter for his courage in pointing out the Human rights abuses towards Palestinians.
Killing innocent civilians is terrible. It is terrifying when done by a suicide bomber and just as horrifying when done by young soldiers with tanks. So perhaps Senator Obama might consider for a change, reaching out to the Jewish/Palestinian peace movement groups. Shalom, Rachel Kaplan
