Condeming the MoveOn ad

I don't believe it. The Senate just voted to condemn the MoveOn ad: General Betray Us.

And I can't believe that 25 Dems voted along with this. Don't they now THAT POPULAR PUBLIC OPINION IS AGAINST THE WAR???
Basically the Senate is saying:

And I can't believe that 25 Dems voted along with this. Don't they now THAT POPULAR PUBLIC OPINION IS AGAINST THE WAR???
Basically the Senate is saying:

"The focus of the United States Senate should be on ending this war, not on criticizing newspaper advertisements," Obama says. "This amendment was a stunt designed only to score cheap political points while what we should be doing is focusing on the deadly serious challenge we face in Iraq. It's precisely this kind of political game-playing that makes most Americans cynical about Washington's ability to solve America's problems. By not casting a vote, I registered my protest against this empty politics. I registered my views on the ad itself the day it appeared.
Obama goes on to say, "All of us respect the service of General Petraeus and all of our brave men and women in uniform. The way to honor that service is to give them a mission that is responsible, not to vote on amendments like the Cornyn amendment while we continue to pursue the wrong policy in Iraq."
OK, they condemned the ad. So I was rudely awakened for
nothing: This AM, about 8:30, I thought MoveOn.org was about to be impeached or something. Barack quote quite right, very apt.
If you are looking for honesty regarding the
Bush Iraq War of Choice for OIl, which has killed over
700,00+ people, where should you look?
General Colin Powell?
The Democrat Party Members?
NO, MOVE.ON!
ALL CONTRIBUTIONS I WAS GOING TO SEND TO DEMS WILL NOW GO TO MOVE.ON.ORG.
I AM NO LONGER A DEM BUT I AM A PROUD MEMBER OF MOVE.ON.ORG!
I AM NO LONGER A DEM BUT I AM A PROUD MEMBER OF MOVE.ON.ORG!"
That is my motto as well, now! ;)
there's no other practical options...

I've been a member for 6 years? I need to send them some money.
Oh btw, the Chaplain in Germany sent me a letter today. Remember when they requested calling cards for the incoming wounded from Iraq and seemed awfully shy about asking? Well, I sent some and they sent a really nice thank you letter. I couldn't figure out why I was getting a letter from a GERMAN hospital...LOL.
MoveOn is not attacking the military, but the report that is full of holes and is contradictory. It's easy for the media and Senate to make the supple connection because it was ingenious of the war mongers to put the 'military' in front of us like that. And if anyone did say anything, then it looks like we are attacking the military. Yup, we did step in it.
I don't know. Dems have been fighting the GOP sheepishly and bowing too much to their power. It hasn't got us anywhere. Congress is doing nothing, and fellow Dems are caving in on votes.
I agree, that there is a split in the party now...it's been there for awhile now. Even some, now are donating to MoveOn than to the Dems.
Something is very wrong.
Thanks, MoveOn, for alienating people we need to end the war just so you can feel good about an unnecessary and largely untrue insult! WooHoo! Another 500 soldiers dead so we can sling insults! Yay!
"Mark my words, any dem who is up for election in 13 months and didn't condemn that ad is going to have it used against them in 08'."
And conversely, any Dem who who voted TO condemn that ad may well have to answer for ti, depending on 1. how this mess they call a "war" deteriorates. 2. How progressive the new base proves to be.
This is one of those double edged swords,
Also, I mean no offense to all our bloggers, but like the rest of you, I consider myself a pretty intelligent person.
I can tell you unequivocally (I've been lurking at Move On for five years) that the folks there aren't exactly chopped liver, and their decisions aren't made lightly,n nor out of ignorance.
There's a game of chess going on in the public mind, and the MOve Oners make their moves according to strategies that have consistently proved fruitful. So while we are all bright bulbs, so are they.
I would suggest we all watch and wait a bit, so far, this is playing out exactly as some of us expected. There are some confused Dems, and their true colors are showing.
Speculating that it can only bode poorly for those who voted against it should be presented as an opinion, not a fact.
"Move On", thanks to the Republicans in the Senate, has become a household word.
So why are all the retired brass AND Petboy's own immediate superior, targetting Petreas?
The Lost Generals I call them. Did you all forget that our own military experts disagree with Petreas?
So Move On, as a free-speech vehicle, should be condemned? Our own brass has already targetted the very "brass" you are all apparently trying to protect...
hmmm... and how will the history books "Portrayus?"
MoveOn has put the war at the top of their list. I have argued with them and I will argue with you that the top priority for all of us should be taking the power over our representatives away from the special interests.
Every single one of the people's concerns (including the war) would be better served without the warping effect of big dollar control.
MoveOn is a PAC and wishes to exert its own control rather than work to fix a broken system. I support them when I agree with them but I am wary of the power they wish to amass.
For those of you who have pulled out the check book, why not send it directly to the candidates you like rather than going through a middleman? Dr. Dean is taking a big hit every time the national party gets blamed for whatever/whenever the sitting majority screws up. I think the do-nothings need to be replaced, but my hope is they will be replaced by better Dems.
On the flip side, Obama and Cantwell did exactly the right thing, and if the rest of the clueless Democrats had done the same it would have sent a real message to the WH, to the voters and to MoveOn. Instead, those who voted yea will pay a price and those who voted nay will pay a price. The correct vote on this stupid stunt should have been, "present".
Thanks Treehugger for posting the tally.
It kept haunting me that a refusal to vote in the Senate on a measure usually is recorded as "present" so I called Obama's office to find out if he was in the chamber for the vote on the MoveOn ad. He was not.
I praised him recently in a comment for taking a stand. I was dead wrong. What he took was a duck and cover. The correct vote for all looking for political cover should have been "present". It is not fitting for Congress to comment on a free speach issue.
Another tick in the "wuss" column for Obama.
I apologize for assuming he deserved extra credit.
