I don't believe it. The Senate just voted to condemn the MoveOn ad: General Betray Us.

And I can't believe that 25 Dems voted along with this. Don't they now THAT POPULAR PUBLIC OPINION IS AGAINST THE WAR???

Basically the Senate is saying:

Partisan Politics
By FreedomOfSpeech Sep 20th 2007 at 5:13 pm EDT
Barack Obama refused to particpate.

"The focus of the United States Senate should be on ending this war, not on criticizing newspaper advertisements," Obama says. "This amendment was a stunt designed only to score cheap political points while what we should be doing is focusing on the deadly serious challenge we face in Iraq. It's precisely this kind of political game-playing that makes most Americans cynical about Washington's ability to solve America's problems. By not casting a vote, I registered my protest against this empty politics. I registered my views on the ad itself the day it appeared.

Obama goes on to say, "All of us respect the service of General Petraeus and all of our brave men and women in uniform. The way to honor that service is to give them a mission that is responsible, not to vote on amendments like the Cornyn amendment while we continue to pursue the wrong policy in Iraq."

As much as I would be more than happy to share my complete disgust with MoveOn, I wholeheartedly agree that the Senate has far better things to be doing than wasting time with this crap. It is not the government's job to be criticizing private speech except in extraordinary circumstances.

Love the GI poster

"How about a Nice Cup of Shut the Fuck Up?" Hah Hah hah!
OK, they condemned the ad. So I was rudely awakened for
nothing: This AM, about 8:30, I thought MoveOn.org was about to be impeached or something. Barack quote quite right, very apt.

Barack makes a LOT of sense here. MoveOn has a mouth and they are not afraid to use it...and the Senate doesn't like that.

By Democrat in Highland Park, IL Sep 20th 2007 at 6:57 pm EDT
When will the Dems stop licking the boots of the GOP?

If you are looking for honesty regarding the

Bush Iraq War of Choice for OIl, which has killed over

700,00+ people, where should you look?

General Colin Powell?

The Democrat Party Members?

NO, MOVE.ON!

ALL CONTRIBUTIONS I WAS GOING TO SEND TO DEMS WILL NOW GO TO MOVE.ON.ORG.

I AM NO LONGER A DEM BUT I AM A PROUD MEMBER OF MOVE.ON.ORG!

Thanks Treehugger for this list-- Good for Obama and Cantwell for not even giving this the dignity of a vote-- What a fucking waste of our tax payer money to even have that up for a vote-- Like they don't have better things to do with their time... AND what about "freedom of speech".. I guess it is NOT in America anymore... g.

I've been a member for 6 years? I need to send them some money.

Oh btw, the Chaplain in Germany sent me a letter today. Remember when they requested calling cards for the incoming wounded from Iraq and seemed awfully shy about asking? Well, I sent some and they sent a really nice thank you letter. I couldn't figure out why I was getting a letter from a GERMAN hospital...LOL.

Well said.
Re: Splintering the Dem Party
By Latino Pundit Sep 20th 2007 at 9:55 pm EDT
It makes sense what you said and you said it well. There is a problem with it though.

MoveOn is not attacking the military, but the report that is full of holes and is contradictory. It's easy for the media and Senate to make the supple connection because it was ingenious of the war mongers to put the 'military' in front of us like that. And if anyone did say anything, then it looks like we are attacking the military. Yup, we did step in it.

I don't know. Dems have been fighting the GOP sheepishly and bowing too much to their power. It hasn't got us anywhere. Congress is doing nothing, and fellow Dems are caving in on votes.

I agree, that there is a split in the party now...it's been there for awhile now. Even some, now are donating to MoveOn than to the Dems.

Something is very wrong.
Re: Splintering the Dem Party
By Arius Sep 20th 2007 at 10:09 pm EDT
MoveOn's purported goal is to end the war. To that end, they need and want to influence moderate Republicans to a) not filibuster and b) vote with Dems on war funding that includes timelines.

Thanks, MoveOn, for alienating people we need to end the war just so you can feel good about an unnecessary and largely untrue insult! WooHoo! Another 500 soldiers dead so we can sling insults! Yay!
Re: Splintering the Dem Party
By John Patterson Sep 20th 2007 at 10:29 pm EDT
How can you splinter something already so divided they make jokes about themselves (Will Rogers and?)

"Mark my words, any dem who is up for election in 13 months and didn't condemn that ad is going to have it used against them in 08'."

And conversely, any Dem who who voted TO condemn that ad may well have to answer for ti, depending on 1. how this mess they call a "war" deteriorates. 2. How progressive the new base proves to be.

This is one of those double edged swords,

Also, I mean no offense to all our bloggers, but like the rest of you, I consider myself a pretty intelligent person.

I can tell you unequivocally (I've been lurking at Move On for five years) that the folks there aren't exactly chopped liver, and their decisions aren't made lightly,n nor out of ignorance.

There's a game of chess going on in the public mind, and the MOve Oners make their moves according to strategies that have consistently proved fruitful. So while we are all bright bulbs, so are they.

I would suggest we all watch and wait a bit, so far, this is playing out exactly as some of us expected. There are some confused Dems, and their true colors are showing.

Speculating that it can only bode poorly for those who voted against it should be presented as an opinion, not a fact.

"Move On", thanks to the Republicans in the Senate, has become a household word.

I have to agree with

Shopman and Arius here, i dont think MoveOn should be targeting the military brass they are just following orders. Bush and Cheney are wide open targets for any attack on this issue. And we certainly dont need to split the party and hand the election to the repuplicans.

"i dont think MoveOn should be targeting the military brass"

So why are all the retired brass AND Petboy's own immediate superior, targetting Petreas?

The Lost Generals I call them. Did you all forget that our own military experts disagree with Petreas?

So Move On, as a free-speech vehicle, should be condemned? Our own brass has already targetted the very "brass" you are all apparently trying to protect...

I am not trying to defend the brass, i just think it is bad politics. But hey as you said earlier they do their research maybe it will play out for them.

Congress has an eleven percent approval rating. This is why. They can't restore habeus corpus, but they can pass this waste of our tax-paying time.
