I was just wondering...
I was wondering how the Democrats are going to be able to combat all the lies and misrepresentations the Republican Party Dirty Tricks Machine perpetuates. There are a lot of people out there who are not rich or even well off who fall for the Republican propaganda. Yes, people who are homeless and must rely on shelters think McCain is THE MAN! Also, people just above that level who rely on the government for affordable housing, their income(SSDI/SSI)and who still have to go to day shelters for food, clothes and sundries, think McCain is the man who will be able to lead this country better than Obama/Biden. I have asked these folks why they support McCain and the Republicans in general and most really can not give a good answer. But those who try to cite the lies and misrepresentations the Republicans have put out there. Some of these folks are prejudice and there is no getting away from it. They make other comments that let you know they are biased...they will not sit at a table with minority people and make comments loud enough for the minority people at nearby tables to hear quite clearly. I know about this because I volunteer at a day time homeless/poor shelter in Boston. I listen and observe people as I work and it is tragic. When I have pointed out this phenomenom to my fellow volunteers...they thought at first that I am making it up, then when they stopped, looked and listened...they were shocked and could not understand why these folks did not understand who cared about them and wss trying to help and who wasn't. I have attempted to talk to some of these folks and cite the facts...but, they don't want to hear it-any of it! There is also another group who votes Republican who one first thinks would not...folks in Mental Health housing and others(elderly) who depend on all of their needs-housing(subsidized) and income(SSR/SSI). They do not realize who gave them what they have and vote on issues like Abortion. What is the common demoninator of all these people? They are poorly educated and do not distinguish between fact and opinion. When the difference is pointed out...they say..."Well, that's your opinion." So, then you realize that you can make no inroads on their 'opinion' and then I wonder, at least, whether any of us have a chance to reverse the latest trends in our society and whether we can do something just to insure that we are not dependent on foreign oil and that we can develop real alternative enery sources. What are other people's experiences? I would like to read about them. - Lee

Many of these people are duo diagnosis - alcohol and or drug abuse / mental illness.
You can't get through that - and in reality shouldn't try. There vote will not swing the election. It is the vote of the people who don't have a duo diagnosis that will.
Street homeless individuals didn't get there overnight. Some decisions on the way got them there and keep them there. Although many are very intelligent - its not an intelligence that is taped into on a variety of decisions.
For example - alcohol abuse and or drug abuse is harmful to an individual - yet many will continue until they become homeless. These individuals will not always pick things in their best interests.
Mentally ill individuals also.
It's not our job to teach them how to vote. It's our job to make sure they have an opportunity to eventually get better no matter what the vote is.
