Alternatives to military service are American as Apple Pie and as old as this Republic. From 1942 till 1973 there was a draft in the United States thirty one years of summoned service alternative included. Objectors to the military dutifully performed alternative service during this period. Sad to say grades mattered and family wealth as well as religion mattered during this period. No intelligent society sends its most educated or best and brightest to the front a very few of them perform service in the rear areas usually well secured. Family religion and wealth can be manipulated to secure deferments from service through unmeritorious college enrollment. Objectivity of grading was a matter of life and death to many some sought to pull strings teacher associations are and were needed to ensure objective standards for academic performance. Those that placed well on military intelligent tests secured the best positions in the armed forces. The Army in case you do not know incurs the most causalities and has the lowest intelligence or if you would educational standards of the services. This sad fact was depicted in schools in films such as the lottery in which children draw straws and the loser is killed by the so called winners this was shown in my public elementary school during the draft years a stark reminder of the cruelty. The borders of the United States can be secured from air and sea invasion it is the enemy within that is bringing current security problems to the United States. Those most endangered by a draft which was defeated politically should be aware of their rights it is after all as most college educated persons know a dotted line.

I couldn't agree with your last paragraph more. And why aren't they, after learning of their blunders doing anything to correct it?

Why are our troops still holding their weapons on Fathers Day in Iraq? pisses me off...

War is no Solution

That's what we should have learned by now.

I think that all young people between the ages of 18 and 24 should put in 2 years serving their country and no one gets out of it or gets an easier job.

and by "serving their country" I do not mean going to war and murdering people.

fuck you...I'm not sending another son for even ONE day, mandatory or otherwise! I have a son working for the government for the last year (fingerprint accepted last week) and he's only in the 11th grade, and my oldest one was a recruiter for the Marines and works on top secret shit for government...nope! Reading books is a far better service to our country than wearing a uniform and carrying a loaded weapon...PERIOD. As I see it, we have a president, what for? To protect us against war? I'm not a war monger, negotiations and skill, not weapons and this president doesn't listen to what the majority wants anyways because he makes money from being LOYAL TO OIL and we don't hold him accountable.

One man can ruin civilization legally and we allow(ed) it.

I fail to see why young persons should be discriminated against and forced into slavery most of their parents and/or themselves have paid for education that most of them did not ask for.
