Post from Mike Gravel's Blog:
Why NBC and the DNC Want Me Out of the Debates

In the past year, I have attended 11 national Democratic debates of which two were sponsored by corporate media giant NBC. However, last week, the network suddenly conjured up arbitrary polling and fundraising requirements specifically designed to exclude me. None of the previous debates I attended held such requirements.

When my staff called NBC directly to find out why I was now barred from attending, Chuck Todd, NBC news' political director, told us that there were three criteria we did not meet, namely that I had not campaigned in New Hampshire and/or Iowa at least 14 times in the past year, that I was not polling at 5% and that I hadn't raised $1 million.

It is abundantly clear that NBC just wants me out of the race. This was made evident by the fact that NBC did not even inform me of its arbitrary criteria before making the decision to stifle my campaign. NBC's Todd waited until 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 19, to inform my staff that I was not invited to the Oct. 30 debate at Drexel University in Philadelphia.

Since I announced my candidacy for the Democratic Nomination for President of the United States on April 17, 2006, I have certainly traveled to New Hampshire and Iowa at least 14 times. And, according to a recent CNN poll, I am tied with Joe Biden, Dennis Kucinich and Chris Dodd.

NBC claims I haven't raised enough money to qualify. I'm proud of the fact that I don't collect millions from special interests (or fugitives like Norman Hsu). The reason why Senator Hillary Clinton seems to have a fundraising scandal every month is because money has corrupted our democracy. By stifling my voice on the basis of fundraising dollars, NBC is reinforcing the power of money over our national political discussion and our freedom.

But why has NBC suddenly come up with "requirements" designed to exclude me from the debate?

NBC's decision is proof that our corporate media do not want a genuine debate over our impending war with Iran. During the last debate I was the only one to aggressively confront Senator Clinton over her vote to label the Iranian Revolutionary Guard a terrorist organization. Had I not brought up the subject, seasoned NBC commentator Tim Russert, the moderator of the Sept. 26 debate, would not have even asked about it.

Most Americans still don't appreciate the gravity of that vote and they don't understand that our government is intentionally raising roadblocks to diplomacy. Corporate media have once again failed to investigate how Bush and a compliant congress have set us on the warpath. Instead the media simply parrots the demonization of Iranian President Ahmadinejad and the administration's unproven accusations against Iran. NBC and the other corporate media have jumped on the war bandwagon and they are determined to shut up anyone who tries to stop it.

The fact that NBC is owned by General Electric, one of the world's leading military contractors, is frightening and certainly smacks of censorship directed at the most outspoken critic of the influence that the military-industrial complex holds over this great nation. In the past decade, GE has benefited financially from the global war on terrorism and currently holds almost $2 billion in military contracts.

So I ask that anyone, who is as concerned as I am about the power of the mainstream media and the military-industrial complex, speak out in support of my campaign today. And, even if you support another candidate, surely you understand the implications of NBC's decision for our democracy and the future peace and security of our nation.

And since the powers that be now require that I raise $1 million in order to participate in the debates, please make a donation to my campaign. Unlike my fellow candidates, I am not focused on raising million of dollars; I am focused on fixing representative government. Help us reach that arbitrary threshold, and I will continue to fight for democracy and peace.

To the Man that Nixon Loved to Curse

You are great Senator Gravel. I have scolded the people who are in charge of marketing you for not doing a better job. If wishes were horses you and Dennis would share the two top offices of the land.

People just don't know you. As for mainstream media, anyone who has a grain of sense knows that they are owned lock stock and barrel by twenty Republican neocons among which the most famous is of course, Rupert Murdoch. He is the man who started the Congressional ball rolling on the cleanup of Richard Nixon's criminal court and he will do the same for Bushes.

I am so fed up with their lying polls and that is tangent I've been on here for almost 24 hours. They WANT Hillary to win because she is absoutely THE ONLY CANDIDATE of all the Democratic candidates including you and Dennis who could not win the presidency with your hands behind your backs.

DEMOCRACY FOR AMERICA has a poll that is closer to the truth--even if I don't like what it says for you! HERE IS YOUR NEW SLOGAN SIR. PERHAPS ITS NOT TOO LATE:

MIKE GRAVEL, THE MAN WITH THE MOST EXPERIENCE AT CLEANING UP REPUBLICAN MESSESS. Mike is the man in 1971 through whose office the Pentagon Papers were released.
CORRECTION!!!!!!!

and this is only the primary season, wait until the general to start attacking all the other democrats, we still needs them to pull together to fight off the republicans. ;)

Right now, our incumbents, if they understand his comment should speak out to defend Senator Gravel, because with one sentence, he opened a can of worms...the label on the can reads:

50% corporate greed,
50% corrupt politicians,
with 30% melting ice

*Warning Label:
Danger to democracy
Danger to campaign financing
Danger to diplomatic skills
Danger to global environment

Transparency
By Letitrip Oct 22nd 2007 at 4:13 pm EDT
Well, Senator Gravel, it appears you're being slapped in your face for telling the truth and highlighting facts that WE the people and Congress should have addressed ages ago. Now, it's your honest way of campaign financing and your comment that causes them to take up arms, because you are tackling corporate greed. Your perspective, your one single comment opened a huge can of worms because you've spotlighted several issues: our failed diplomatic skills, our bullying Iran, Iraq occupation, campaign financing taints justice, lobbying interests corrupts our politicians. The comment gives sense to the enormity that corporations like General Electric, Blackwater (who paid heavily for Bush's campaign), insurance, pharmaceutical, and oil industries are all driving this big oiled machine on all the issues with their dirty money, power and greed. It's time America wakes up and demands accountability and a change. With global warming issues, this will only make them more powerful yet. Attend this debate whether they want you, or not, stand on stage or the sidelines, you wouldn't go unnoticed. Too, where are the front runners on this, are they speaking out in protest in your behalf? Seems if they understand these corporations are a danger to our very democracy, they'd assist by defending you. All Aboard the big corrupt ship. Refusing, or neglecting to speak out, speaks volumes about their own greed.

Keep smoking them out by speaking out, otherwise all facets of transparency is undermined. Good luck Senator Gravel on this Mission Nearly Impossible.

Dear Letitrip,

They did it to JP Fenyo...because he was having an impact. And now Gravel.

The Party is over. Democratic my foot.

The Fixer

PS; Time to create The Constitution Party of America. (In this election it will hesitantly support the Democratic Party candidate but it will seek to weaken both major parties over the long haul and offer Americans a real alternative). This is my friend JP Fenyos idea.

The other candidates should protest. Without the probing and spontaneity you and Dennis bring to the discussion all we would get would be canned stump speeches.
I don't have a million dollars. Maybe they don't want me to watch either.

WHY?
By LITTLE DINE' FOR RECALL ON COLUMBUS DAY Oct 22nd 2007 at 6:07 pm EDT
YA''AT'EEH!

AHOA' TO YOU AND ALL OF YOUR STAFF.
OPEN LETTER TO SENATOR GRAVEL.
DEAR SIR,
I AM A NATIVE AMERICAN, AND I DO NOT HAPPEN TO BE ONE OF YOUR SUPPORTERS. I RESPECT YOU AS I DO MOST OF THE CANDIDATES WITHIN THE PARTY.
I JUST WANT TO POINT OUT THAT IT IS HIGHLY UNFAIR FOR THAT TO HAVE BEEN DONE TO YOU.
I AM GOING TO POINT OUT IT WILL NOT STOP HERE.
AS TIME GOES ON THE PARTY IT'S SELF WILL BE IN TOTAL ACCORD WITH THE CONTROLLING MEDIA TO TAKE AN AX TO THE BALANCE OF THE CANDIDATES WITH ONE OR ANOTHER TRUMPED UP PHONY EXCUSE TO NARROW THE PLAYING FIELD DOWN TO ONLY TWO CANDIDATES. THE SELECTED ONES HAVE ALREADY BEEN CHOSEN.
IT WILL NOT BE OBAMA NOR RICHARDSON THAT WILL ESCAPE THE AXE.
I HAVE BEEN SAYING ALL ALONG THAT THE MEDIA IS CONSPIRING ALONG WITH THE NEO CON PARTY OF REPUBLICANS TO INSURE THE AGENDA OF THE REPUBLICANS WILL BE MET. THEY WANT HILLARY AT ALL COSTS, BECAUSE SHE IS THE MOST BEATABLE.
AS YOU KNOW HILLARY IS A REPUBLICAN IN THE DRESS OF A DEMOCRAT.
I WILL GIVE TEN TO ONE ODDS THAT THE NEXT CANDIDATE TO GET THE AXE, WILL BE KUCINICH FOLLOWED BY JOE BIDEN. THE LAST TO GO WILL BE RICHARDSON AND OBAMA.AND CHRIS DODD.
ALL THIS I HAVE SEEN BY THE GRACE OF THE GREAT SPIRIT IN ALL HIS MERCY.
I AM NOT A DREAMER, THIS I HAVE SEEN THROUGH THE GREAT SPIRITS ENLIGHTENMENT, ILLUMINATING ME WITH THE WISDOM TO HAVE THE FORESIGHT AS TO THE TREACHERY THAT BREWS AGAINST ALL AMERICA, UNDER THE CONTROLL OF REPUBLICAN PLITICAL CORRUPTION, WHOSE STRANGE BEDFELLOWS ARE MEDIA AND BAD DEMOCRATIC ROTTEN FRUIT.
I PRAY THE GREAT SPIRIT SPAIRS US ALL FROM THE CONTROL OF THOSE THAT WOULD SELL US ALL OUT FOR ECONOMIC AND POLITICAL GAINS SUCH AS THE TRILATERAL AGREEMENT WITH CANADA, USA, AND MEXICO..
I BID THE GREAT SIRIT BLESS YOU SIR. I WAS AT THE PREZ ON THE REZ EVENT, AS AN INVITEE, NOT AS AN ACTIVIST FOR MY CANDIDATE. I AM THE OLD BEARDED GENTLEMAN THAT WAS DIRECTLY BEHIND YOU IN A WHEEL CHAIR WEARING A DARK BROWN WESTERN SUIT AND BLACK WESTERN SARATELLI HAT. I WANTED TO APPROACH YOU AND GREET YOU HOPING TO TAKE A SNAPSHOT WITH YOU.
I HAD ALREADY ASKED MY LITTLE DINE' TO PREPARE FOR THE OPPORTUNITY. I WAS NOT ABLE TO DO SO. I WOULD HOPE THAT THERE WOULD BE ANOTHER OPPORTUNITY.
I AM OMITTING THE NAME OF THE CANDIDATE I SUPPORT FROM THIS LETTER, BECAUSE I DO NOT WANT IT TO BE CONSTRUED AS PROMO. THIS LETTER I WRITE IS TO WELL WISH FOR YOU AND AS A SUPPORT FROM THIS HUMBLE NATIVE AMERICAN, THAT HAS A VERY HARD TIME STOMACHING THE SEA OF EXCREMENT OUR POLITICAL PROCESS HAS BECOME AND THE TREACHERY THAT ABOUNDS. MY HEART AND SOUL ARE WEARY AND HEAVY WITH SORROW. SOMETHING MUST BE DONE BY ALL TRUE AMERICANS TO TAKE CONTROL OF AMERICA, AND GUIDE IT BACK TO A TRUE DEMOCRACY.
AGAIN I REPEAT MAY THE GREAT SPIRIT BE WITH YOU AND BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY.

T'A'A' IIYISI AHE'HEE' FOR HAVING THE COURAGE TO SPEAK OUT. EVEN THOUGH I DID NOT MEET YOU IN PERSON, I AM HONORED TO HAVE BEEN UNDER THE SAME ROOF ONLY A FEW PACES BEHIND YOU.

Sen. Gravel, I didn't know about this matter until getting my e-mail and messages today. it is disgraceful. My fellow commenters are absolutely right IMO that the corporate media, who have long since anointed Sen. Clinton, are desperate to silence you.

I'm going to find out how, and then e-mail NBC to complain. I urge everyone who has commented here to do the same, or to call. I would be surprised if the other candidates complained and supported you, though of course they should.

Kucinich/Gravel 2008!

The country needs to hear from you. As a matter of fact maybe we should have at least one debate without the so called front runners.
