This story tells some of the tale but I post the link mainly because of the list of other companies which have recently been sold out of country.

I cannot now find another article about the proposed divestiture in which GE was quote as suggesting the appliance division was not making enough profit. They wanted to sell because it was not profiting by 10% (my underlines).
Not only will the US, if it is sold to a foreign company, lose that business, it will also lose the technology which creates new products in that field.

yes and no

I heard this story on NPR a couple of days ago, but as you say it has not been the big news.

I disagree that the USA loses the technology that goes with this business. It doesn't happen that way most of the time.

The minds of our people are the sources for new technological innovation. The technology itself does not create itself--people do and many of those people are Americans. Innovation is really what we do best.

Here is a postive thing to remember: globalization has taken our junk off our hands. it was done in a stupid manner and in a manner that hurts not only our workers, but the workers of the world, but we can correct this stupidity.

Now we have to put our minds together to come up with new technolgy and new uses for the factories that have been left empty and the raw materials surpluses that are left behind so we can create new jobs and new markets for the world. Perhaps that should be our new manufacturing model: The USA minds create the new innovative products, design the manufacturing lines and processes, test them out (with American workers) and ship the models overseas. BUT WITH new innovative technology coming up for the workers so shipping jobs our of our country is not a bad thing any more.

When you ship our jobs out of this country, one of the first thing to not be don in the new country that is not talked about is Pollution Control. These countries for the most part don't have any so the dump there waste on the ground and in the air. We have the EPA and I have long believed that is the true reason that work moves. Sure they save some money by paying there new workers almost nothing but that is minor compared to what they save on Pollution Control. There is only one world and we all need to worry about that. So I think it is a Bad Thing

I think it is a bad thing as well because without a company offering a job to improve a product the innovative American will enter another field.

re. US polution: we are the biggest offender - but that can be another opportunity, too.
