LOL

I can care less what a bunch of Jim Crow Dixie Trash and Right-Wing Bush Supporters pass back and forth to each other . Sharing their little Anti-Obama conspiracies across the aisle. Racism is indeed a bi-partisan effort. I'm under no illusion to the contrary.

I would say to them , so the heck what? What do they care anyway ? They don't honor that flag themselves. They honor the Confederate Flag and the Nazi Swatz Sticka Flag. So, they shouldn't be focusing on how real Americans choose to honor the American Flag anyway.

That's what I would tell them.

DITTO! The rest of us would do well to remember what Stephen Colbert said about the lapel pins: As long as we focus on trivia such as whether Obama wears a lapel pin with the American flag, George Bush is not a lame duck but a mighty duck.

Regarding this photo: 1. where was it supposedly taken?

It is a ridiculous collage.

It was at the Harkin Steak Fry in Iowa. It's a real photo. But it doesn't mean jack. He was listening to the singer. I only put my hand over my heart when I say the pledge. Never when I sing a patriotic song. I guess I really don't love my country.

LOL

Considering ALL the people that were on that stage, Obama was probably the one one of them that was actually being true to his faithm and wasn't being a hypocrit.

The Flag
By Nicholas Wilt Oct 31st 2007 at 9:43 am EDT
I have never understood the obsession with the flag. It smacks of idolatry.

Me neither.
Re: The Flag
By Arius Oct 31st 2007 at 9:56 am EDT
The flag is precisely the same as a sports symbol. A Boston Red Sox fan's "B" or an "NY" for a Yankees fan. Wearing it shows you are a fan of the country much like wearing a blue star shows you're a fan of the Dallas Cowboys.

It would be a bad idea to stomp on a blue star if you're at a Cowboys home game.

Other fans would naturally question your fanhood if you said, "I'm a fan of the Cowboys, but they suck, I hope the other teams win, and I am going to burn the blue star, which I will refuses to wear."

Good analogy. Consider a sports fan who gets upset because they feel someone didn't accord enough respect to their team's symbol... they should get a grip. And the best way to show them up is for the team to execute on the field, not for the team's fans to go beat them down for disrespecting the blue star (or the stars and stripes).

Nicholas,

I think that if you had ever served in the military and shed your blood in battle literally, and watched your commrads shed their blood and held a few of them in your arms while they were looking up at you pleading not to die...your idolatry opinion about the stars and stripes might just change.

Then again...maybe not.
Re: The Flag
By Nicholas Wilt Oct 31st 2007 at 10:51 am EDT
Hi Staunch,

Actually it is members of the military in particular whom I think of when I say we should question the idolatry. Our military servicepeople don't put their lives on the line for a piece of cloth, right?

Some people close to me have served in Iraq. One was grievously injured by an IED, left side torn by shrapnel and he's lucky to have kept his leg... he says he could hear the blood spurting out of his arteries (he swears he never lost consciousness). As his blood poured onto the desert sand that day, I am pretty sure the flag wasn't the first thing on his mind.

Here's the Laws
By none Oct 31st 2007 at 11:08 am EDT
Once again please don't shoot the messenger: Here is the law regarding hand over the heart

UNITED STATES CODE
TITLE 36
CHAPTER 10

PATRIOTIC CUSTOMS

§170. National anthem; Star-Spangled Banner
The composition consisting of the words and music known as The Star-Spangled Banner is designated the national anthem of the United States of America.

§171. Conduct during playing
During rendition of the national anthem when the flag is displayed, all present except those in uniform should stand at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. Men not in uniform should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. Persons in uniform should render the military salute at the first note of the anthem and retain this position until the last note. When the flag is not displayed, those present should face toward the music and act in the same manner they would if the flag were displayed there.

Thanks for digging this up.

For my part, I note the use of the word "custom" and the absence of punitive measures for those who fail to comply with the custom.

I am not a flag burner, I even put my hand over my heart during the national anthem; but I also don't think people's patriotism should be measured by the passion they display for this symbol.

AGREE!!! Great response.

Um,

There's a difference between a LAW and a CUSTOM or CODE of Conduct.

I'm sorry but I am not about to adhere to some "CUSTOM"
You may want to choose your words carefully. Especially when you are repeating someone else's "message" and are trying to not get "shot".

Besides, what's the purpose of posting this again? Just so we'll know what's out there?

There's a lot out there , but I'm not posting it. Do you want to know what e-mail is floating around amongst African Americans pertaining to the (REAL) Democratic Party? Here. Take a look. But hey, don't shoot this message.

I don't measure patriotism by.....
By Cato Meador Nov 1st 2007 at 12:28 am EDT
....whether someone is maybe preoccupied looking at something in the crowd or the like. However, during an election cycle, it IS something that Obama, as well as ALL Dem candidates down the line, should really be careful with.

ADDITIONS TO THE TRIVIAL PURSUIT
By Liz Nov 1st 2007 at 1:24 pm EDT
Oh gosh, I debated about adding to all these responses to such trivia. again as long as we all focus on such insignificant crap as this, George Bush is not a Lame Duck but a Mighty Duck (Stephen Colbert).

Two comments: 1. when you have your hand over your hearts like this, you are supposed to be facing the American flag. All of these people have their backs to it.

2. Second of all I don't know of the tradition of putting your hands over her heart when the National Anthem is played. AND if there were such a tradition, I would not follow it either. Isn't it just a little twisted to piously place one's hand over one's heart when one is singing lyrics such as "bombs bursting in the air". Perhaps if Barack is elected he will change our national anthem to AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL and we will all follow the example of those lyrics instead.

GOOD FOR BARACK FOR DECLINING. PHAQ THE IGNORANT

Liz depending on your screen size look up a couple of inches you will see it is more than a tradition it is a Federal Law.
They were all facing in the right direction and O'bama was violating the law.
