The burden of memory

This is a particularly difficult season for me. The waning of the light and the shortening days strengthen the dark memories.
Link to the text of Bush's press conference - a difficult read. Though in one section he stole our slogan "we can do better" which was perhaps the only thing he got right.

He's redefined Iraq as a contest between "the ideology of liberty" vs "the ideology of hate" - how odd is that? We're in a battle of ideas, led by a nitwit who for the past 5 years has been trying to win with weapons and shifts the reasons for our entry more than the winds.

Couched between the lines are arguments that misread the elections, play to American pride (we can't lose - it is unthinkable) and more idle speculation on bi-partisanship which is a concept that clearly is beyond his intellectual grasp.

Praising a robust economy he exhorts us to continue to spend. I'd disagree to the point of exhorting you all to cancel any unnecessary spending indefinitely. If you haven't bought all your Christmas gifts, consider giving U.S. Treasury bonds instead or donations to reputable charities.

Remember New Orleans! The CBS show Studio 60 had a poignant scene in its Christmas Show episode where musicians from this modern diaspora played Silent Night against a background of scenes of the city. It reminded me of the song "7 O'clock News/Silent Night" from the Vietnam era. Memories can be paiful when we see the same mistakes being repeated.
