LAS VEGAS (AP) â€" Nevada authorities seized records Tuesday from a group they accused of submitting fraudulent voter-registration forms â€" including for the starting lineup of the Dallas Cowboys."Tony Romo is not registered to vote in the state of Nevada, and anybody trying to pose as Terrell Owens won't be able to cast a ballot on Nov. 4," said Secretary of State Ross Miller, referring to star players on the pro football team.

State authorities raided the headquarters of the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, a group that works to register low-income people.

Miller said the raid was part of a monthslong investigation, and he contended the group had submitted registration forms that used false information or duplicated information on multiple forms. He did not estimate how many.

Bertha Lewis, interim chief organizer for ACORN, said the group has been working with election officials to weed out fraudulent forms from those submitted by the canvassers it hires."Today's raid by the secretary of state's office is a stunt that serves no useful purpose other than to discredit our work registering Nevadans," Lewis said.

"For the past 10 months, anytime ACORN has identified a potentially fraudulent application, we turn that application in to election officials separately and offer to provide election officials with the information they would need to pursue an investigation or prosecution of the individual," Lewis said.

She said ACORN had turned in 46 problem applications submitted by 33 former employees to election officials in the Las Vegas area, where it has registered 80,000 people.

According to its national Web site, the group has registered 1.3 million people nationwide for the Nov. 4 election. It has encountered complaints of fraud stemming from registration efforts in Wisconsin, North Carolina, New Mexico, Michigan, Ohio and Missouri.

"The fact is, this is hard work and there were some people that probably sat down on a couch and filled out names out of a phone book," said Matthew Henderson, Southwest regional director for ACORN. "That's really what we're talking about here â€" not an attempt to steal an election."

Miller said no one had been charged or arrested in Nevada.

His spokesman, Bob Walsh, said investigators were using information from various sources, including the FBI and the U.S. attorney's office in Nevada.

"You don't have to read too many cop novels to know that sometimes people will tell you a grain of truth to try to hide the rest of the truth," Walsh said. "I'm certainly not suggesting that ACORN is that nefarious, but at the same time just because they handed over 50 to you doesn't mean there aren't 150 others out there."

Yep, same thing my article says. Its a "stunt." We will see.

ACORN is being investigated in so many states for this same thing.

I'm sure ALL of the phony registrations are being handed over to authorities. RIGHT.

I could believe that possibly IF ACORN hadn't been caught doing this in other states also resulting in investigations. There is a long history of fraud by this group, which is unfortunate because they could be doing something good instead.

Just google "ACORN fraud."

disenfranchised poor voters. maybe if they had responsible democratic leadership in their individual precincts - there would be more structured oversight of the registration process.

by the way - check out my lastest post.

Googling ACORN

gets you all of the wingnut trash. This is a coordinated smear. Limbaugh yesterday said ACORN was THE cause of the mortgage crisis. This is part of their talking points. Don't be fooled again.

And just because they have Community Organiz in the name.
WRONG

This group has been doing this for YEARS. Its documented. There have been so many investigations and findings of fraud.

There is no excuse for them to be doing this and corrupting the system, especially with federal funds for God's sake.

Also, the Secretary of State of Nevada, Ross Miller, a Democrat, scoffs at the notion that this is some kind of politically driven campaign as ACORN states.

Through their investigation they have so far uncovered that ACORN contracted with the Nevada Dept of Corrections and hired 59 former inmates to register voters. ACORN has now stopped that.

Miller states they have not been to calculate so far the amount of fraudulent registrations, but they are working on it, with the aid of confiscated ACORN records and computers.

Not. Project Vote noted that all lawsuits in 2004 brought against it alleging fraud were dismissed and claimed that "politically motivated law firms [have] brought baseless charges of voter registration fraud.

Anyone can file a lawsuit. You can't document shit! Please try.
STILL WRONG

I'm not talking about lawsuits brought by some moron. YOU are.

This is about state and government investigations into ACORN breaking the LAW.

Just nove on Steve. I grow tired of you nipping at my heels incessantly for no reason whatsoever.

Its a waste of time responding to your ridiculousness.

We're talking indictments, fines, convictions, and prison time here. Just be glad I'm in a generous mood and am throwing you some bones. I can post links all day for you and not repeat an incident of fraud:

Not that any of this will matter. You will ignore and believe all the incidents across the nation, going back years, are all just a smear campaign.

That's pretty sad. :-(

PEOPLE

People should not let anyone do any type of registering for them, that's the lesson here. One of my close friends was stopped in front of WalMart to sign a petition and at the end there is a portion about registration...He's a doc and was in a hurry, they told him they would finish the rest...turns out they changed his party affiliation. He became a Republican overnight and didn't even know it.
Fraud is out there, not a surprise.
My daughter filled out her registration and I delivered it to the post office myself way ahead of any deadline...guess what? She wasn't listed on the voter log on voting day. Fraud is everywhere. People with special interests are everywhere.
