SHOULD NEEDY FAMILIES BE REQUIRED TO TAKE DRUG TESTS TO RECEIVE AID?

Sen. David Vitter (R-LA) introduced a bill that would amend the Social Security Act to require States to implement a drug testing program for applicants for and recipients of assistance under the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program. If an applicant fails a drug test, or was convicted of a drug related crime they can be denied aid. Also, states would be allowed to require random or set time drug tests. A person can be permanently denied aid if they fail three drug tests or receive three drug related convictions.

Not if you are talking about a family. There are ways of ensuring the money they may be eligible for goes directly to the landlord, the utilities, using bank like cards for food stamps that can only be used for food.

If you are talking about an individual with a history of drug use, yes, by all means.

It seems reasonable to expect people to meet some standard of behavior in order to receive some of my tax money.

On the other hand, I'm not a big proponent of drug laws. And no, I'm not, nor have I ever done illegal drugs. I simply believe that it is your body and you own it. We certainly should punish illegal behavior done while on drugs though, just as we punish drunken behavior.

But, requiring people to take drug tests to receive tax-payer provided money to live on is entirely reasonable. If they can pay their bills and still get high, good for them, that's not my business. It becomes my business when they demand that I pay for their lifestyle.

I'm not sure how to vote on this one since the main objective is to help the children in these families. I'm not sure how much money is required for testing. I do know that known sexual offenders are required to be tested in order to get their children back.

I think Jan probably has the right idea, as we don't want to fund addiction.

This is the kind of thinking that has helped to create an underclass in America that is so very hard to get out from under.

......we require that all CEO's and corporate officers who get their OWN version of federal subsidies, and all State and Federal officials, both elected and otherwise, have to do the same before they can pick up each paycheck!!

I'm generally against corporate subsidies, but there is a small difference here: Corporations actually produce something of value for the money spent on them. Welfare recipients produce nothing, they only take.

They produce children, some of whom repeat the cycle, many of whom grow up to be productive, even successful Americans.
