THE POLLS
Bad? Brilliant?

Someone posted moments ago that Obama has finally hit the 51% mark.  I went to the Gallup website to view the charts and graphs.  It must pain the conservative folks over at Gallup to have to publish this change in leaders.  But what really gets me is that this poll is reported on television each news cycle and the number of interviewees was only 2,747.  People really put stock into these polls and to me how is 2,747 really representative of the electorate?

Can someone explain this to me because I simply am at a loss.

Remember the Dewey election results when the newspapers printed that he had won based on the polls? But he had lost. On Election day, all of the polls are put to rest. The polls only represent that group who took part in the poll. Then, some math guy said the result of the poll would be the result of the electorate. After that great one liner, the political parties start paying for poll results. Political math has never been the same.

In the Pundit chatter, I think the concensus is that the gallup daily polls actually are taken with a big grain of salt.

Nonetheless, the average of polls show an overwhelming movement towards Obama over the last week.

EG. Pollster.com averages the polls in the states and they have Obama winning 320 to 163 in the electoral college. Link

The betting site Intrade.com has people betting 60% to 40% that Obama will take Florida. Intrade's numbers are always magnified, but that's stunning.
