YOU CAN LEAD A HORSE TO A TRILLION EDUCATIJON DOLLARS BUT

...BUT THE HORSE ISN'T GOING TO LEARN VERY MUCH EVEN IF IT EATS IT.
Over the vast majority of my adult life I have heard the mind numbing ad phrase..IF YOU WANT A BETTER JOB, GET A BETTER EDUCATION.
As well over the vast majority of my adult life I've seen hundreds of billions of tax payer dollars pumped into education, most of it in buildings and school administrator wallets.
The biggest bucks that can be spent on any system of education isn't worth the paper its written on, if students don't show up for class, and/or if politics takes classroom control out of the hands of teachers.
I think, in my one man opinion, that one of the major reasons kids are bringing guns to school with them, which is on the news regularly nowadays, is because teachers are afraid to even try to maintain disipline in the classroom for fear of being attacked by parents and their superiors, and/or get sued if they do disipline a child, and schoolyard and classroom chaos becomes the norm.
I personally know two highschool teachers that say flat out say that they are afraid to even try to disipline one of their students out of fear of getting shot to death...how about that for a revolting to teach in educational environment atmosphere.
I never dreamed of a time in my life until about ten years ago, that schools would have their own, seperate from municipal, police forces. But its reality and not just at highschools.
Along with ripping control out of the hands of teachers, parents have also lost a major part of their control over their own children, because if mommy or daddy "spanks," the kid is just as likely as not to report them to the cops or one of the child welfare agencies as parents being abusively cruel to their child, and the parents wind up paying fines and/or both going to jail...and that happens with regularity now!
Here is another product of that "IF YOU WANT A BETTER JOB, GET A BETTER EDUCATION" has created and brought about, and one of the reasons, if not THE reason, so many aliens of ALL types are taking over farm work, construction, manufacturing, warehousing, and other similar jobs where you have to sweat.
All these U S Citizens getting those better educations and higher degrees, some of them spending over a hundred thousand bucks to get it...aren't going to go in to jobs where they earn their bread by the sweat of their brows and who can blame them, and all of this which brings up an entirely different seperate set of problems.
Jobs for higher educated people in the U S A get more scarce, which can't even help but be noticed already, this in conjunction with job offshoring, and then just who among the people that achieve all these higher degrees in education if they can't find work suitable for all their efforts to achieve higher education, are going to be willing to jump in with both feet into the sweat for a living pool to build all the new roads, highways, homes, and buildings and all the other ancillary things that facilitate our way of life. This is one of the major reasons many highly educated U S Citizens are moving to other natins to get those better jobs. This means we are not only losing citizen that could be productive right here if it were not for the greedy corporations and other greedy employers, we are also losing much of U S born and bred intellectual property products when these highly educated folks feel compelled to leave and work in foreign lands. In essence we are all being forced by the greedy in this nation to commit societic and economic suicide.
Nobody in their right mind that gets just an Associate's degree, much less a bachelors or masters degree or even higher, after taking the time and spending all the money desires to swing a pick and shovel or hammer for a living.
So who does that leave left to perform those dirty sweat of the brow jobs....and why has work ethic and work quality taken a nosedive in the past twenty years? Unless the reader is a dithering idiot they aready know why.
It's "the bottom line almighty dollar and how much of it can I get with the least amount of effort."
At some time this nation had better wise up to the fact that some of "us" will have to sweat to earn, and the employers of those who sweat to earn had damned well better wise up to the fact that they are going to have to pay much higher than survival wages to get U S Citizens to do it. If it takes unions then I say let unions thrive, until they too get too greedy as some of the unions already have.
What we are doing to ourselves in this nation is rapidly completing cutting off our own noses to spite our faces while painting ourselves into ever tighter corners and "WAKE UP" isn't close enough strong a warning people.
Not by a long shot strong enough.

It is very popular and easy in our country to blame the victim. Our education system is an example in which too many adults are willing to blame the children for their inability to excel and learn in an environment which has been slowly poisoned and starved for at least a generation or two of students by the adults who have abused and neglected their responsibilities to educate and teach by example.
It is also acceptable in our country to enable victims to wallow in and self-medicate their pain instead of helping them to heal. Many Americans are enamored with the "idea" of people pulling themselves up by their bootstraps. But we've been selling our children cheap shoes from China--pushing our toddlers around in shopping carts at Walmarts. Numbing our societal pain and theirs with empty consumerism. Too many parents have provided no examples of strength of character, of self-control, of patience, of dependability, of independence of thought or self-sufficiency. Why should it be any surprise to any of us that we are now reaping what was sown.
You are absolutely right that much of the "money" we spend on education isn't going to resolve the horrific issues that face the adults of our future. And I will promise you, that suddenly getting "tough" and demanding more from those to whom we (as parents and teachers) demonstrated less, will not cause Americans to "wake up."
Stomping our feet, pounding our fists, and shouting about how "things used to be," isn't going to do a damn thing. The consequences to our behavior cannot be diverted, we are going to have to suffer them, and suffer them we will. After all, suffering is really the only way human beings ever make decisions to change, and we have now created a very dangerous and distracting culture in America--we can deny our suffering for a very long time...
But I have a question about one thing you said: I believe the quality of teaching dropped precipitiously,......
Is it that or is it because teachers are being dictated to from higher authority within the school systems what they can and can't teach and to what depth they can teach that which is dictated to them?
I'd be interested in your comments on it.
I think that our education system and the quality of our educators have fallen prey to the steady march of "corporate" values which have replaced ethics and culture. Ultimately, the truth is that captialism doesn't value a level playing field, and education as a means to achieve a society of equal opportunity is mostly a democratic myth. And here in America we are not now, and haven't been a democracy for quite some time. We are a government, economy, and culture based on captalism--quality education for all is one of the most socialist of ideals--it should come as no surprise that our education system is in such steep decline.
Thank you for your reply.
And thank you for being one of the few Democrats that post in this blog that can see clearly at least one part of the problems in this nation, and stating your knowledgable first person postition with such informed authoratative eliquence.
As a person in your peer age group, I'm 61 with similar life experiences to your own, can say you are correct on each of the points you addressed in your reply, which is something I cannot say about other democrats in this blog that post ridiculous garbage and worn out propaganda as absolutions to be believed and adopted.
Most sincerely,
Tom Pearson
