Toast in Texas?

On Friday a McAllen, Texas, paper (which previously endorsed Hillary Clinton), spotted a state representative and locally noted Clinton backer ... at an Obama rally.

State representative Aaron Pena explained he was at the Obama rally to support his son, who is working for Obama. Fair enough.

But then he added this when asked if he switched sides himself. Pena said, "I will maintain my commitment but it appears to me that the decision will be made by the public on March 4. I made a commitment to Hillary Clinton and I must maintain it. I gave my word. However, as an observer, it appears to be increasingly evident who is going to win."

I'm not terribly familiar with south Texas, but every indication is Pena is a pretty big deal in the Clinton campaign in the area. If someone like that is resigned to an Obama win out there - and willing to publicly talk about it - you know Clinton's prospects aren't looking good.

PENA AT OBAMA RALLEY.

THAT MIGHT SEND A CONFUSING MESSAGE.
HOWEVER IT IS HIGHLY POSSIBLE ARON PENA MIGHT BE STARTING TO SEE THE LIGHT, AND IS USING SON AS AN EXCUSE..
FIVE STARS.
DID THE PRESS GET ANY PICTURES OF ARON PENA STATE REPRESENTATIVE AT OBAMA RALLEY AFTER HAVING GIVEN HIS ENDORSEMENT TO HILLARY?
IT IS A SHAME HE WOULD FEEL OBLIGATED TO MAINTAIN HIS SUPPORT FOIR HILLARY, IF HE ALREADY HAS SEEN THE LIGHT, THAT OBAMA WILL BE THE NOMINEE.

I think there's a picture at the link.

I don't necessarily blame Pena for sticking it out with Clinton. I admire the loyalty. What's really intriguing is here he is, apparently a top high-profile Clinton supporter in an extremely critical part of Texas for Clinton, effectively conceding.

People like this don't say it's over unless it's really, really over.

No picture, just a bombshell of a quote.

Pena

Yeah I heard Pena the elder on the radio a few days ago. He was saying that he supported Clinton and his son supported Obama but that after the election they had agreed like good Democrats to support whichever candidate won.

I think a lot of hispanic politicians now are getting worried over their early endorsements of Clinton because Obama is sweeping our state and hispanics are getting behind Obama. Thus after the dust settles from March 4th they are looking at where their political careers will be.

From all that I can see, the race in Texas will be a repeat of Wisconsin. It won't be the runaway that Hawaii was but it will be at least a 15% spread in Obama's favor. Ohio might be closer but Obama will still win.

What I am wondering now is if Hillary would accept should he extend her the VP position.

Would that work?

Still not to count the cookies ahead of time. We have one more debate to go and it is never wise to underestimate a worthy opponent.

Still by the time that debate is held, I'll bet at least a third of Texans will have already voted. We like to do that because it is so convenient. I've already voted.
Predictions

I think your predictions are right on. It won't be a Hawaii-style blowout, but it'll be in the 15-20 point range.

I got familiar with early voting when I lived in Nevada. I figure Hillary will start on election day something like 50,000 votes down. Not a good place to be.

Game plan for Obama is the same as for the last debate: don't screw up. That's pretty much all he needs to do.

I think Obama is going to convincingly take the Hispanic vote. From what I've seen there seems to be quite a bit of Spanish-language grassroots stuff there (see this Link as an example).

HRC won't be the running mate. There's just no way. I've heard Obama is interested in Tim Kaine.

Ya''at'eeh! Liz,
I think too much muddy waters are still flowing under the bridge for that to happen.
Besides I firmly believe that if Hillary were to be added to the ticket, she would be a definite setback for obama. The independents and obamacans, libertarians, and green party that came on board for Obama, would jump ship if Hillary were a on ticket as VP.
There are many Dems that would have a problem with that her on ticket.
The Republicans are holding back for now on an arsenal of negs on Hillary, because they know now she will not be the nominee, with Hillary as VP all the arsenal of negs on her would be used against Obama.
It would be a smart move if Obama consider Gov Richardson.
There is a large voting block of Hispanics and Native Americans that support Bill Richardson and would come over to Obama. Rather than voting for Hillary, they plan is to write Richardson in general election ballot.
