As some of you alerted me, Avanza Supermarket seems to be charging some arbitrary 10 percent surcharge on every sale. There has been no justification for this, and this was covered by 9News Wants to Know.

The University of Colorado Denver’s Hip Hop Congress & fellow students will host its Students for Democracy Right Now event on Thursday, August 21st from 5:00 PM - 9:00 PM at the Auraria Campus’ Tivoli Student Union’s Turnhalle

Students for Democracy Right Now is a student organized event that allows students, political grassroots organizations, and elected officials to network, share ideas, and to discuss issues affecting the lives of Americans. The event will provide an opportunity for young voters to actively engage in the political process and to learn how it impacts their lives and their communities.

Scheduled keynote speakers are Colorado State Representative Debbie Benefield, Terrance Carroll, and candidate for U.S. Senate, Mark Udall. The event will also feature Hakim Green of the Stop the Violence Movement and Morgan Wells on behalf of Hip Hop, representatives from student organizations, community development organizations and advocates, and a host of vendors and supporters. A wide range of topics will be discussed, including education, community service, and the importance of political participation

Students for Democracy Right Now is open to the public and is open to all ages.There will be opportunities to register to vote and opportunities to learn about various organizations around Colorado

John McCain the flip-flopper.

Isn't it time the Democratic Party turned the tables on the Republicans and started using some of their tried and true gimmicks? Take the flip-flop for example. The party must use this idea at the convention in Denver... State each and every flip flop that John McCain has made over the years and accentuate it with the giant flip-flops that were used to pound John Kerry in 2004. It only makes sense to notify the American public in a way that will make it stick. Spread the word!

First of all, IÃ¢ï¿½ï¿½m an anthropologist. I love to study people. I also love politics and am a strong democrat. As a strong democrat, I am pained to see the division of the party right now. I helped at the caucuses in Nevada and saw it there. I have been at the caucus here in Idaho and saw the divide between Clinton and Obama supporters (the undecided and Edwards people were hiding in the corners). I am seeing it in my personal life between my roommates and friends, and as part of my College Democrat club. I see the division online like through the DNC.org partybuilder toolÃ¢ï¿½ï¿½s blogs, and IÃ¢ï¿½ï¿½ve seen it in my facebook groups. It hurts. My social groups are having in-group fighting. Behavior we would never allow during a normal year is being allowed. It hurts a lot to see your friends and fellow democrats form camps, circle the wagons, and shoot at the center. But IÃ¢ï¿½ï¿½m lucky IÃ¢ï¿½ï¿½m an anthropologist. With my knowledge of human behavior I can think through it and calm myself. For those of us who are already tired of the fighting, here are some words of relief.

Million Youth March in support of New Politics - Not Old

If the Clintonista's have to resort to dirty politics in order to confront the momentum of the Obama campaign; how are they any different from the Republican party and the shenanigans it is guilty of?

We have the hope that this year; Politics could arise above the negative politics of old. Unfortunately, we see that again, the same oh, same oh; from the Clinton's and their surrogates.

I spoke with a number of young people this past weekend. If they (and I) feel that the Clinton's have used dirty / negative politics in order to win the Democratic nomination. These young people will either not vote (a vote for McCain); vote 3rd Party (a vote for McCain) or vote for McCain.

If the Democrats want to win in November; they will have to project a new Democratic Party and not fall back on the politiking of old.

Senator Obama represents a new start for America and American politics. This is what the country wants and needs. If Senator Clinton is elected to the White House, the Republican party will attack her every single day of her administration. If Senator Obama is elected; he would probably bring many Democrats along into the US Congress and possibly obtain a filibuster proof majority in the Senate. If Hillary wins; we won't get a follow thru in the US Congress; but still have gridlock.

If Senator Obama becomes President; he will have a grace period similar to FDR's 1st 100 days. FDR was able to implement dozens of changes that still affect America today. Senator Obama could also have this grace period and "mandate" for change. That is what this election comes down to. If we really want change; Hillary needs to not provoke this race beyond Texas and Ohio. Otherwise, the Republicans will win in November and the country is lost for another 4 years and trillions more in debt.

We need a million youth march to converge at the Democratic convention. Regional groups of students from around the country arriving each day, so that at the opening of the convention there are a million young Democratic supporters clamoring for an honest and openly brokered convention. Otherwise, these votes and these voters will be lost to the Democratic Party for decades to come.

Remember the 1968 Democratic convention ? We do not want a repeat of that; however, we no longer want the politics of old.

On Jan. 19, party caucuses meet in each precinct to choose delegates to county conventions. The delegates selected are not bound to any candidate. At the county conventions on Feb. 23, delegates to the state convention are chosen. They are not bound to any candidate. The state convention is April 18-20, during which delegates choose 25 of the 33 delegates to the national convention. Sixteen of the 25 delegates are allocated proportionally to presidential candidates based on the support for the candidates in each of the stateâ��s three Congressional districts. Nine delegates are allocated to candidates based on the support among all of the delegates attending the convention. The remaining eight unpledged delegates are chosen from party leaders.

A Rundown of Denver's First Reading Liberally Meeting

Hello Readers and Liberals alike!

I am happy to report that the first meeting of Reading Liberally, in Denver, was a huge success! Ten people (including one young reader) were in attendance, with two others sending notes of intent before the meeting that a conflict prevented them from attending (and they would be at the next one).

Those of us in attendance (Kyle, Jason, Snow, Sky, Jolynn, Melanie, Jen, Gerry, Sherri, Jay) got to know each other a little bit better and talked about our person policy interests. This was a far-reaching topic, which included media consolidation and scapegoating throughout history and in the present day (Snow), sustainability of the planet(Gerry), factual bases for domestic policy reform (Jason), the attrition of the radical religo-conservatism from Falwell to President Bush 43 (Kyle), the narrative of world history and the role of the US in it presently (Jen), fiscal policy (Melanie), the cross-section of dogmatic belief and fear and the eventual impact on our public life (Jolynn), and ways to affect a positive change in the world through an improved understanding of it (Sherri). Sky, who visited us with his mother, showed more interest in his Gameboy (but had a hopeful slogan on his t-shirt!).

So, when I got home from work this afternoon, I settled into my usual routine - grab some water, settle into my favorite chair, turn on Star Trek, and fire up the laptop. When I first log onto the Internets for the day, I usually visit the same sites in the same order - Gmail, Facebook, ESPN, Crooks and Liars, and CNN. It was only when I reached the last site on my list that I learned that Denver had been selected - over New York City - to host the 2008 Democratic National Convention.

Upon reading that, I let out a cheer to celebrate the fact that the city just 30 miles from my hometown had been selected to host one of the most important conventions for the Democratic Party since... ever.
