An open letter to my friend George and other Republicans:

Please put aside ideological emotion and read this as a note from a very concerned friend, not a person who supports a candidate. The only basis I can see one holding strong to our nation's current path is if he is committed to undoing our Constitutional Democracy in favor of theocracy or another approach.

This election is about freedom. Specifically my freedom, that of my children, that for which our Founders and Framers wrote, fought and died. That freedom for which we are fighting again, perhaps as we have not since the American Revolution.

I believe that the Republican party has been hijacked. They will continue to drive to outsource our government to private companies that take our money and fail, while making a profit. I also believe that the neo-conservatives are misnamed and that they will continue to destroy the liberties we had under the constitution until 1980 (take RVW out of it if you want for now). I believe that the move toward a theocracy is anathema (as did Goldwater and other neo-cons) to the Founders' and Framers' beliefs otherwise they themselves would have managed our country that way from day one – which they did not. Moreover, I think that the sale of morality by immoral leaders is the greatest lie in the history of the USA.

I support my candidate, but in the end I could not care less if it were Barack Obama or any other individual that is put up for this job. I am fighting to take back our country. The Bush/Cheney-driven administration has fundamentally failed and has led us to become a country that I do not recognize. Cheney has been on this path since he worked for Nixon as did Rumsfeld and others in this administration. Whatever their reasons, they have failed us in ways that no other administration has ever failed the citizens of this country. No amount of window-dressing can refute the facts.

They say someone to old can't be President. I also say a lunatic can't be President. But look, Barack Obama might actually win.
This country can't afford 4 years of an Obamanation. He will get in office, and have no clue what to do. It will be Jimmy Carter's second term. He will pass every liberal bill no matter what, which will really irritate moderates like myself. He wants to raise our taxes, and is against off-shore drilling. That ISN'T change we can beleive in.

The movie Obsession: Radical Islam's War With the West, whose trailer is below, was delivered with your Orlando Sentinel newspaper this AM. And, it is my understanding, the DVD was delivered to households receiving other newspapers around the country today as well. True?
Apparently, Parade Magazine isn't conservative enough for some folks. But hey, they paid to package it with our paper, so glad to be of service! Did the check clear?

Anyhoo, didya watch it? Check out the trailer if you have any questions about what it's about, and those who endorse it. Lots of Fox and Limbaugh plugs for it in that trailer. They're in lock step over its virtues. It's two-to-three years old, and the reason it's being shipped out to newspaper readers across America? Scaring the scareable before an election, apparently. Michael Moore's giving away his latest film on the Internet to do the same thing, but Obsession at least helps a paper's bottom line. More power to'em.

Readers of the St. Petersburg Times on Sunday found a little rancid bonus in their newspapers this weekend: a DVD called Obsession: Radical Islam’s War Against the West, which is a hate film ostensibly about Islamic terror. It’s really a thinly veiled attempt to influence the presidential election by flooding anti-Muslim sentiment ahead of the Obama-McCain balloting in November.

As explored here this past weekend, the Clarion Fund has paid dozens of newspapers across the country -- almost solely in "swing" election states -- and The New York Times to distribute the "Islam terror" DVD "Obsession" with their home delivery packages. Among the larger cities where this has taken place: Miami, Philadelphia, Denver and Pittsburgh.

An estimated 28 million copies have been distributed so far, also through the mails and other magazines. An article at the group's site, www.radicalislam.org, all but endorsed John McCain this past week, then was pulled down.

But at least one newspaper turned away the money and refused to distribute it, calling it "divisive."

It's the Greensboro News & Record in North Carolina.. The longtime editor, John Robinson, explained his reasoning in a column yesterday.

A controversial DVD distributed to millions of Americans during the past week through direct mail and newspapers, including The Miami Herald and El Nuevo Herald, has angered many Muslims in South Florida.

Obsession: Radical Islam's War Against the Westwas packaged as an advertising insert in 70 newspapers, including The Sun Sentinel and The Palm Beach Post. The Clarion Fund, a nonprofit organization that promotes ''national security through education,'' sent the hourlong preview of the documentary to 28 million households, many in election swing states such as Florida, Ohio, Michigan and Pennsylvania. Readers of The St. Petersburg Times, The Florida Times-Union of Jacksonville and The News-Press of Fort Myers also received the DVDs.

The DVD includes montages of terrorist training camps and suicide bombers paired with narration by commentators such as Daniel Pipes, founder of the conservative Middle East Forum think tank. Many of the film's pundits are known for controversial views on Islam. In one part of the DVD, clips of Muslim children being recruited as suicide bombers are interspersed with images of Nazis.

“My cellphone has been ringing off the hook . . . We feel that it's going to incite more hate and bigotry against our community,” said Altaf Ali, Florida chapter director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations. The DVD does not do enough to differentiate between terrorists and mainstream Muslims, he said.

Just weeks before the election, there are questions about a controversial insert published in The Orlando Sentinel. The insert on radical Islam included a 60-minute DVD.

Over 300,000 copies of "Obsession: Radical Islam's War Against The West" went out to Orlando residents as an insert in Sunday's Sentinel. Twenty-eight million copies will go out in swing states nationwide by the end of the week.

The Clarion Fund paid millions of dollars to get the DVD out. It's a non-profit organization that claims to focus on national security. Eyewitness News asked the New York-based group and they would not say exactly how many millions they receive or who their donors are.

A decision by The Charlotte Observer and other newspapers to distribute as paid advertising a DVD about Islamic fundamentalism brought objections Friday from Muslims, who condemned the documentary as “hate speech.”

The DVD called “Obsession: Radical Islam's War Against the West” was inserted in about 200,000 copies of today's Observer.

More than 70 other U.S. newspapers, including two other McClatchy newspapers, The (Raleigh) News & Observer and Miami Herald, also are including the DVD in their deliveries.

The arrival of tens of millions of DVDs of a controversial film on doorsteps around the nation -- but almost exclusively in election "swing states" -- via newspaper home delivery continues this weekend, with explanatory articles and subscriber feedback appearing on some of the papers' Web sites.

The DVDs of the 60-minute film, made in 2005, and titled "Obsession: Radical Islam's War Against the West," arrived Saturday with, among other papers, the Charlotte Observer and the News & Observer in Raleigh, with delivery with the Miami Herald and other papers set for Sunday.

Other Florida papers to distribute it on Sunday included the major dailies in St. Petersburg, Tampa, Fort Myers and Orlando.

Despite some protests from Muslim and liberal activists, the newspapers -- all hard hit by drops in ad revenue in recent months -- have explained that the DVD does not violate their usual standards; see our exchange with The New York Times below. A spokesperson there said the Times last Sunday inserted 145,000 DVDs in its papers delivered in the following markets: Denver, Miami/Palm Beach, Tampa, Orlando, Detroit, Kansas City, St Louis, Cincinnati, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Milwaukee/Madison. What This Election Is Really About: Conservatives vs. Progressives

The following post discusses what I think is the REAL elephant in our living room that no one is discussing:

In my opinion, and I'm sure others may disagree as well as agree since this is after all a democracy, I think that the bottom line for this election is really about wrestling our government out of the hands of conservatives and into the hands of progressives--and that includes conservative Democrats as well as conservative Republicans.

Our Democratic Party has its own unofficial conservative wing--the Democratic Leadership Council (DLC) of which both Clintons have been very active over the years. By my standards, based on much of the legislation that they have supported, neither Bill nor Hillary Clinton are "progressive democrats". I would categorize both of them as conservative Democrats.

I have a lifetime of experience in the financial industry and I can tell you for certain that bankers have no greater friend than Bill Clinton.

Tire Tracks Across your back?

I received an email today that was supposedly written in humor touting the beefeating providers as Conservatives and the weak as Liberals. The email which was written as a humorous tribute to the chest beating right dragging their women across the floor and spouting 'we're the choosen ones' was built on three concepts. 1) The first one is that all liberals are weak and will gladly lay down for those on the other side to walk on, 2)that being creative and in possession of a creative mind is a weakness and 3)and this third one is implied but states that all Democrats are liberal.

I was watching cable the other day and Henry Rollins, a punk rock music artist with a power lifters body, who by the way, is also a poet and actor was the host. Rollins was the first and only television host I've seen who actually voiced that he was a liberal and ready to kick some ass as opposed to laying on the highway awaiting tire tracks. What a concept I thought, liberals who are not afraid to stand up and be counted, use a firm handshake and look down the barrel of a conservative's gun with one that has a bigger barrel!

Secondly, the right's conservative Corporate generals are for the most part working only to put great wealth in their own pockets and more mindless consumers on the street. The creative community for the most part are creating "thinkers". "Thinkers" consume but not without reading the label.

Thirdly, as you know all Democrats are not liberal and that's what makes the world a great place cause we need a balance of ideas from all sides to keep America great. Of course some Dems aren't really Democrats but virtual wolves in sheeps clothing and yes, I am speaking about Joe Liberman but that's another subject altogether.

In closing, I say stand up and be counted, stay true to your heart and we'll see a sea of blue in November!

Jim is an old time Texas Liberal. Close friend of Molly Ivins. In fact this book is dedicated to her. Now you can go here and listen to him talk about his book. Hightower is a great Texan, great speaker, great writer and great liberal. He is somewhat of Mark Twain.

In the book he looks into the lives of hardworking souls who have found ways to break free from corporate tentacles and redefine success in business politics and life in general. Roosevelt that answered Japans attack with the full might of this United States, It was Liberal Harry Truman who had the foresight and Guts to use the Atomic Bomb on Japan thus saving the 200,000 U.S. Casualties that were expected if we had to invade Japan instead of dropping the bomb. It was a Liberal John F. Kennedy who had the Strength to face down the Soviet Union over their placing Missiles in Cuba only 90 miles from out shores.
Lets straighten out the Faux Fox morons, Liberals have done more to create, build and preserve this United States than the lily livered Draft dodging Conservatives like George W. Bush ever could. By the way God is a Liberal other wise he would not have taken the risk of changing the course when he declared, "Let there be light!"
