My Story: I was raised in western NC in a time when the mountains were truly green and the sky was often a cerulean that hasn't been seen since the gutting of the EPA. If you had to grow up poor, at least you had the most beautiful and majestic place to be poor in. You can't grow up amidst that sort of verdant splendor, watching the ever-changing moods and play of light against the mountains, and not have a sense of connection to the land. Not just to the land itself (as home), but just as importantly to the people who took care of it and handed it down.
My roots go deep into those hills and even deeper in the Sandhills, deeper still to the Maryland and Virginia Colonies.
I often think of my ancestors' outlook on this very idea of what it means to be American. I've read stories, letters, wills as few there were and they all ring with the same truth: We value liberty, we value the bounty accorded by the land and we will do our best to make sure that our grandchildren are as proud of and feel as responsible for the stewardship of both.
The right have turned our beautiful land into a sewer. They've blighted our cities with malicious neglect, allowing poverty to rise; desperation and crime with it. They have trampled and outright attacked the Constitution.
It would be poor stewardship to say nothing in defense of our resources and the Constitution.
