My Story: I am a fourth generation trade-unionist going back to my great-grandmother who was in the Ladies’ Garment Workers. My grandfather recently received his 50 year membership to the Plumbers and Pipefitters (UA) and is also an AFSCME retiree from when he worked as a plumber in a county water treatment plant. My father recently retired from the Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers (BAC) where he had worked for 20 years, my mother works for the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) and my brother works for the National Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA).
I myself have interned both in the COPE and Legislative Departments of the AFT. For the 2002 election cycle, I was a precinct captain in Maryland’s Eighth Congressional District. For the 2004 election cycle, I was an intern and then placed on staff in the national headquarters of Gephardt for President. After graduating from Hobart College in May 2006 I became the Eastern Shore Coordinator for Ben Cardin For Senate, organizing nine rural Republican counties in Maryland. After Cardin won the primary, I became the Eastern Shore Field Director for the Maryland Democratic Party. In the nine counties of the Eastern Shore, there was an increase of 30% in Democratic turnout totaling more than 12,000 votes for Democrats that had not been there in the prior Gubernatorial election of 2002. Out of the nine county councils, four elected Democratic majorities and four out of ten State Assembly seats elected Democrats.
