My Story: I grew up with my mom and dad and sister Lisa in Indianapolis, IN, Peoria, IL, and Vernon, CT. I went to the George Washington University in Washington, DC, and became the first member of my family to graduate from college. I got a degree from Harvard Law three years later, and went to work in D.C. for the Democratic National Committee, and several members of Congress.
I decided to go into business. My first business took six weeks to fail. I tried again, and the next business took six months to fail. I kept going, and co-founded a more successful company called Fleet Call – which eventually became Nextel. During this time, I met and married my wife Lisa, settled in Alexandria, and became the proud father of three daughters, Madison (16), Gillian (15), and Eliza (12).
I worked in venture capital for 20 years, investing in forward-thinking ideas and looking for the next big thing. That’s what led me to run for political office and eventually become the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia – I was seeing the sweeping changes happening to our country, our economy, and our world, and I wanted to make sure that Virginia and our nation were correctly positioned to be able to compete in the global economy.

"I take up my task in buoyancy and hope. I feel sure that our cause will not be suffered to fail among men. I feel entitled at this juncture, at this time, to claim the aid of all and to say, 'Come then, let us go forward together with our united strength.'" - Winston Churchill on May 13, 1940
