My Story: I didn't have much of anything growing up, and was raised to believe that a strong work ethic was the only thing I could count on to pull me up from poverty. I've worked about every job there is, starting with washing dishes in a work camp at age 12.
I'm certainly better off now than when I started, but one thing has become apparent to me: sometimes luck, more than hard work, plays too big a role in one's success.
I see people working 2 or more full time jobs and still they struggle with their families to survive.
I want to see my country return to its promise of individual destiny: that if you work hard enough you can live a quality life.
Republicans believe that anyone can "pull themselves up by their own bootstraps," but Martin Luther King asked "how can you, if you have no shoes?"
Formerly a Green party member, I changed parties to Democrat after the 2000 elections. I am committed to increasing the influence of the Democratic Party - and therefore liberal and progressive values.
