Democracy for America - Georgia Local Groups

Group Profile
There is a great need for Democrats to organize locally to elect Democrats to School Boards, Neighborhood Associations, City Councils, and County Commissions across Georgia. Democrats can register at www.dfalink.com and search by zip to find one of many local DFA groups forming across Georgia and meet other individuals in their own neighborhoods who hold similar beliefs and values. DFA groups bring neighbors together for a stronger community. DFA groups are locally self-organized with individual members setting the civic, social or political agenda of the group with out the formalized bureaucracy of the Georgia Democratic Party. Democracy for America (DFA) was inspired by the presidential campaign of Howard Dean. DFA is a political action committee dedicated to supporting fiscally responsible, socially progressive candidates at all levels of government—from school board to the presidency. DFA has a long-term goal to rebuild the Democratic Party from the bottom up for the future. J. Scott Christianson of the Columbia Daily Tribune in Missouri has an analysis of how local DFA groups fit into the inverted pyramid of the Democratic Party structure. Democracy for Missouri a local chapter of the national Democracy for America, recently held its statewide convention in Columbia. While some Democrats view organizations such as DFM as competing with the party proper, they are really more complementary than competitive. Groups such as DFA can do things the local party organization can't or won't do, such as endorsing a primary challenger instead of the incumbent. Such things need to be done from time to time so that the candidate with the best chance of winning in the general election emerges. Recent examples include the defeat of Joe Lieberman by Ned Lamont in Connecticut. According to Scott, Local DFA success depends, literally, in turning the Democratic Party on its head.
